An odd question I know, but I believe I've stumbled across the song I would want played when I've bit the dust:
wlfqAnWoCxE

When the blood dries in my veins and my
Heart feels no more pain
I know, I'll be on my way,
To heavens door,

I know when I'm not,
i'll be hoping i don't drop,
To a place where I will rise, like before,

I know when I'm not,
i'll be hoping i don't drop,
To a place where I will rise, like before,

I can feel, something happening
that I've never felt before
Hopeless dreaming will start,
Dragging me away from heavens door

I can feel, something happening
that I've never felt before
Hopeless dreaming will start,
Dragging me away from heavens door

When my mind stops thinking,
My eyes stop blinking,
I hope
Somebodys there.

And my heart stops beating
and my lungs stop breathing
in air,
I hope somebody cares,

When the blood dries in my veins and my
Heart feels no more pain
I know, I'll be on my way,
To heavens door,

I know when I'm not,
i'll be hoping i don't drop,
To a place where I will rise, like before,

I know when I'm not,
i'll be hoping i don't drop,
To a place where I will rise, like before,

I can feel, something happening
that I've never felt before
Hopeless dreams will start,
Dragging me away from heavens door

When my mind stops thinking,
My eyes stop blinking,
I hope
Somebodys there.

And my heart stops beating
and my lungs stop breathing
in air,
I hope somebody cares,

When my mind stops thinking
My eyes stop blinking
I know
At the end.

For a Dancer

I don't remember losing track of you
You were always dancing in and out of view
I must have thought you'd always be around
Always keeping things real by playing the clown
Now you're nowhere to be found

I don't know what happens when people die
Can't seem to grasp it as hard as I try
It's like a song I can hear playing right in my ear
That I can't sing
I can't help listening
And I can't help feeling stupid standing 'round
Crying as they ease you down
'Cause I know that you'd rather we were dancing
Dancing our sorrow away
(Right on dancing)
No matter what fate chooses to play
(There's nothing you can do about it anyway)

Just do the steps that you've been shown
By everyone you've ever known
Until the dance becomes your very own
No matter how close to yours
Another's steps have grown
In the end there is one dance you'll do alone

Keep a fire for the human race
Let your prayers go drifting into space
You never know what will be coming down
Perhaps a better world is drawing near
And just as easily it could all disappear
Along with whatever meaning you might have found
Don't let the uncertainty turn you around
(The world keeps turning around and around)
Go on and make a joyful sound

Into a dancer you have grown
From a seed somebody else has thrown
Go on ahead and throw some seeds of your own
And somewhere between the time you arrive
And the time you go
May lie a reason you were alive
But you'll never know

There will be none.

But if there were I'd stick to this inspirational...

Hang On To Your Life

Thinkin’ ‘bout the people gone by
Screamin’ that I don’t wanna die
You can push your head
But don’t you push it too far...

Thinkin’ ‘bout it’s here and it’s real
Wonderin’ how I really should feel
You can sell your soul
But don’t you sell it too cheap...

Hang on to your life
Hang on to your life

Thinkin’ ‘bout betraying a friend
Thinkin’ ‘bout delaying the end
You can ride the wind
But don’t you ride it too high...

Hang on to your life....

(Spoken, from Psalm 22)
They gaped upon me with their mouths, as a ravening and a roaring lion.
I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint:
my heart is like wax; it is melted in the midst of my bowels.
My strength is dried up like a potsherd; and my tongue cleaveth to my
jaws; and thou hast brought me into the dust of death

I haven't given it any thought, personally. But I liked the idea of the person mentioned on the radio recently who went for 'Return to Sender'. And this, a few years ago, made me laugh:

'A crematorium in Stourbridge has apologised to the family of a recent client. Instead of playing, as requested, 'Every Time We Say Goodbye', they accidentally played 'Smoke Gets In Your Eyes'.'

In my country only gipsies play music at their funerals.
I was shocked to see ( and hear ) a gipsy fanfare at a funeral singing a song that is sung at drinking parties. It's hard to translate because the gipsy usage of grammar/ vocabulary is imposible but it's something like:

In my life I have an apoplexy:
Giving a drink to everybody.

( in this case apoplexy is used with the sense of mad habit )

There is a big family row in my family. One of my aunts died in June and in between the fighting, the vicar calling the police and three riot vans turning up they played Bill Wither's 'Aint no Sunshine when she's gone'. It was all a bit irrelevant in the end. Needless to say, it was a funeral I didn't bother attending.

I've always imagined the mourners crying as my coffin disappears behind the curtains, then Eric Idle's voice crackles over the PA system:

"Cheer up Brian, you know what they say....."

George Harrison - "All Things Must Pass"

Sunrise doesn't last all morning
A cloudburst doesn't last all day

Seems my love is up and has left you with no warning
It's not always going to be this grey

All things must pass
All things must pass away

Sunset doesn't last all evening
A mind can blow those clouds away
After all this, my love is up and must be leaving
It's not always going to be this grey

All things must pass
All things must pass away
All things must pass
None of life's strings can last
So, I must be on my way
And face another day

Now the darkness only stays the night-time
In the morning it will fade away
Daylight is good at arriving at the right time
It's not always going to be this grey

All things must pass
All things must pass away
All things must pass
All things must pass away

A keening woman perhaps.

When I studied music in UCD (University College Dublin to you, Bamber), there was an infamous lecture in second year where some ancient recordings of keeners were played, and the lecturer would say, just before playing "I trust you will have the necessary maturity not to find humour in these recordings, as others have in the past."

Obviously, this was enough to have us all biting the insides of our mouths to stop the laughing, as the recording that began was like a cross between Monty Python and and Mrs Doyle from Fr Ted. Many of us failed th etest, as the stern professor witnessed in disgust. Looking back, I reckon he did it deliberately, and had his own laugh once he returned to his office...

As for my own passing, I'd have to go for "Who knows where the time goes", by Fairport Convention. Pity I won't be hearing it that one last time.

If I became famous some day in a way that there would be great sadness with my passing, then I think I would be qualified to have Adagio for Strings played at my funeral. But I would have to do something spectacular with my life in order for that song to be played at my funeral.

I find that oddly (and very) funny. I'm not sure why though.

Maybe it says that I'm sort of morbid, but I picked out my funeral song years ago (when I was in my late 20's/early 30's): an instrumental version of the Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter". Even though it's the lyrics that make it the best choice for me, the song melody itself is also quite beautiful.

I'm studying Irish music myself in UL. And, to be honest, I don't find the keening or caoineadh humorous. I find it quite difficult to listen to and very hard on the ear. Not just in tone and timbre, but also when the whole scenario of the funeral is taken into account. It's an interesting aspect of the Irish culture and one which created a 'shock factor' for some visiting foreigners on witnessing it [e.g. the book Alexander's Travels in Ireland - or something to that effect]. Anyway, another thread for another day.

In all seriousness, I'm thinking I'd like to have Ben Harper & The Blind Boys of Alabama do a rendition of "I want to Ready" or similar.

I'm sure you do, and rightly so. I mean no disrespect, but when an over-pompous university professor with no personality tells you that you MUST take something seriously on a dreary Tuesday morning it's hard to keep a straight face.
