I literally had to leave for awhile because I couldn't stop from laughing when they unveiled it....And I wasn't the only one.

The really sad part is that the "Artist" is kind of famous for showcasing the......ah....certain part of the human anatomy that separates males from females.

I really think somebody played a major joke here.

What was wrong with the cup type trophy they've had for years?

This thing has to be a joke, right? Come on.

I think RJL25 is right. Last lap at Homestead will be a fight for SECOND between Will and Dario. I wouldn't want to have to display that thing in my trophy room.

Steve-o
29th September 2010, 13:10
Here's Dario, Will, and some "assistants" with the trophy. I didn't like the new Sprint Cup when they unveiled that. Compared to this, the Sprint Cup is like an Oscar or The Stanley Cup.

Is this the take home trophy for the winner? Will they continue to use the Cup they had been using year after year as a display unit with the champions name on it?

I like the idea of any trophy that is competed for year after year to have the name of the previous champions on it (a la Stanley Cup, not sure how other sports do it). The Borg Warner has the winner of the previous Indy 500's, I believe the Izod Indycar Cup should as well.

ChicagocrewIRL

Who is responsible for this $%*#@ trophy ?

Who made the final decision to accept this ridiculous naked kirby silver surfer on a road runner acme brand unicycle that conveys no class, no dignity, no common sense, no seriousness, no gravitas to a world class championship ?

I am hoping that once again that Mr. Bernard hears the outcry and changes this
ends this and makes a change for the better....

When you think of iconic trophies that have class and dignity and lend sense of awe and inspiration to a championship, THIS thing does not do it. I cannot think of anyone who seriously would want to hoist this thing above their head in triumph...

Give me ....
The Borg Warner Trophy
Give me....
The Stanley Cup
Give me ....
The Vince Lombardi Trophy
Give me ....
The America's Cup
Give me ....
The Commissioner's Trophy
Give me ....
The O'Brien NBA Trophy

Even the FIFA World Cup is better than this piece of ....

IICS ..... What is this thing ???? I would PREFER a bowling trophy. YIKES

These giant sculptures are on the grounds of Barber Motorsports Park... were these the "inspiration" of the new IICS "trophy" ?

It had those evil letters "IRL" on them. And we can't have anything related to the words INDY RACING LEAGUE, on anything anymore.

I find myself wondering if the folks in charge really want to be taken seriously?

I really don't get it. How does this move the sport forward? This markets the sport to whom? I really don't understand where they are going. If they want to market to the artsy-fartsy crowd, well done. How many of those people go to races? I think they have delusions of being cosmopolitan, appealing to the wine and cheese crowd. Meanwhile, it's still auto racing. If they want to appeal to those crowds, they can keep running races at airports and half empty stadiums.

And then, they roll out bikini bottoms and cleavage??? So they try to appeal to the lowest common denominator, too? A Lombardi/Lord Stanley/Borg Warner certainly would befit a champion, and would help market the sport. This fiasco? This trophy belongs in a corner display in some art museum.

ChicagocrewIRL
30th September 2010, 05:34
I asked all my non race fan friends at the office..... in a very unbiased tone of voice....I asked " What is your opinion of this trophy?"

The answers I received...

"What the hell is that ?"

"For a racing trophy, there isn't much metal, a lot of wood and a really weird super hero on a gyro wheel thingy."

"What sport ? Car racing ? What does that have to do with car racing?"

"Is that guy naked? I can see his ...."

well you get the idea....

IndyCar cannot be taken seriously with that monstrosity of a trophy. I think the only way you could get that thing as an acceptable status symbol of a champion driver of a world class racing series is if you attach a check for 10 million.

Honestly.. what driver would be proud to display this %&$*(#@ in their trophy case?

They should make a really cool trophy out of carbon fiber in the shape of something that symbolizes speed.

Why didn't Randy come up with like the top 10 designs and let the fans vote on it ??? WHY WHY WHY

When the IndyCar Champion goes to kiss the trophy , where will he/she kiss it ??????? hmmmm ????

You and me both...

In a world full of trophies, very few have any history or style that gives you the idea that they will be around for a while. The ones that do? The Claret Jug (the OPEN), the Wannamaker Trophy (PGA), World Cup, Stanley Cup, the Borg Warner, the Harley Earl trophy (NASCAR)......and then IZOD foists this sucker on us??

Heck...Cups and bowls with some art and style do add something to the sport. The Big 4 American sports with the exception of Hockey are generic disposable almost scupture ( sorry, they make all those up every year and give them away...you cannot look at any of the ones in America's 3 big sports beyond hockey and see the winners)

A trophy should provide a sense of the history of the sport.....not be a piece of esoteric BS....

The basic idea of making a kind of "Oscar of Motorsports" is actually not all that bad, but the execution has 3 major flaws:

1.) the way he stands on the uni-wheel doesn't look in any way realistic or even physically possible
2.) the wooden base doesn't match the hard metal figure at ALL!
3.) the dude is NAKED with "too much information" displayed. Not very family-friendly.

I could have envisioned a much better execution of the concept, where the wheel and figure are somehow better in sync, where the figure itself is more appropriately attired (how about some kind of flowing fabric waving in the air to give a sense of speed, or even a cool looking racing overall... or even a vintage looking race gear with goggles and leather helmet, etc.), and where the base actually matches or compliments the figure's hard steel feeling (maybe a kind of all-chrome base, or something similarly metallic)...

No, it doesn't. Whoever conceived the new IRL title trophy has no sense. This is the problem with art in our society anyway today. The trophy the winner receives for the final race next season in Las Vegas will be much better than this junk. It will be just a belt.

The old IRL trophy, like the permanent Sprint Cup, has winner's names on them.

This mechanized Zombie would be great for a Sci-Fi award.

"And the award for the best Zombie Robot Space Clown goes to..."

I'm sure that nobody ever guessed that the 'Doom and Gloom' of the past would eventually be memorialized in the form of a Zombie trophy for the surviving series. That's just EPIC!
