Singapore Grand Prix weather

I've seen at Formula1.com that thunderstorms are predicted for Friday, Saturday and Sunday and Singapore. Have you found any other sources? Should it rain, how could it affect the race?

I don't know if it would be safe to have a night race under the rain, but the light reflecting on the water could be a big problem for drivers, as it could dazzle them. Do you know of any night racing event where it has rained?

I don't know, but I am afraid that this will cause the race to be stopped or SC for most of the length.
Lets hope not. I hope it has been done successfully before somewhere.

I think the most pertinent comparison to the potential situation this weekend is the 2009 Qatar MotoGP night race. The 125cc race was called after rain began due to the high visibility concerns like the glare off the track. The 250cc and MotoGP races were rescheduled to the monday.

This is much more relevant as unlike endurance racing the floodlights will cause so much more glare in the event of rain than headlights would. I am also assuming that enduro tyres do not pump out as much water as F1 tyres, but I may be mistaken. Certainly the possibility of endurance racing cars driving in another cars spray at night for at least 90 minutes is quite small compared to F1.

Also, unlike Circuit de la Sarthe, Marina Bay is flat as a tack and does not appear to have any areas that would naturally channel water away from the track, nor does it have any surfaces near the track which would soak up water. Standing water will probably be a big issue here - which also means glare from the foglights.

If it does rain this weekend there is a distinct possibility the race mightn't even start. Rescheduling it to monday is definitely not an option.

The race will go ahead regardless of rain - unless it is monsoon style, in which case daylight races would be stopped too.

And are they heavily flood lit? No they aren't. If it rains heavily there could be some serious problems far more that an day race.

What kind of feedback did the previous two night races in Singapore receive. From Teams, drivers, and spectators.

If I understand correctly, the timing of the race is governed by the time differences in Europe , and designed to provide the European viewership the opportunity to see the race in real time, at a prime viewing hour.

The race will start. May never see a green flag, but it will start.

Worst case is monsoonal rain, in which case the race would be stopped in dry conditions too. Anything less can be covered by the safety car.

I'll wait until it happens though.

BTW, did you guys ever drove on a wet road in the city during the night? Did you see the road? I guess you did. So why would F1 be any different? Just because their overalls might get wet?

The BTCC night races at Silverstone were in heavy rain if I remember right and I dont think glare was too much of a problem.

That's exactly the problem, 14:00 CET is no prime viewing hour, maybe in Bernie's dreams.

Those attenting the grand prix are strongly encouraged to purchase a $2 survival kit at the entry gates containing a poncho and earplugs, with profits going to charity. Noting that it is a rain or shine event.

I think it is one of the best ideas to hold a grand prix in Singapore.

Marina Bay is a pretty challenging racing circuit - public roads, ANTI-clockwise, lots of 1st and 2nd gear bends.

The barrriers are right there so concentration is particularly high - do you hear that Lewis and Fernando?

The f1 people will be eating dinner at 2 or 3 am and having to sleep when it is daylight and having breakfast at midday :-]

I am sure that Jense and Lewis have been on the simulator - but Jenson also likes to spend the week before Marina Bay in Japan.

I remember from last year the drivers could not find ideal visors either - and with the temps and humidity, its like racing in a sauna.

Last year the same tyres used in Monte Carlo, Valencia "S" and the Hungaroring were used at Marina Bay.

I think Jense and Lewis will go well and if rainy conditions become messy and greasy, then Jense will be in his element.

Just remember that when they say thunderstorm, they mean tropical thunderstorm, where visibility is zero, and the rain comes down like a waterfall. :eek:

It’s better to see the new horizon on the wide sky of the Grand Prix. Singapore is the ideal destination for such marvelous racing activity. Things seem to be heating up pretty good. Really I have to check out my busy schedule how far I can go and see the grand prix on my own.

My colleague lives in Singapore a mentioned that rainy season has come early this year and generally it's at its heaviest between 4-6pm. So if the rain eased and they can drain the track a race could happen if there's a downpour but it could make things very tricky, esp with the added issue of glare.

I for one prefer being out on a mountain tour or something similar.
Luckily there is no F1 in winter so I can go skiing without wondering if I might lose a half good race or not. ;)
