Franck Sias and Jérémi Ancian should run on 2011 spec. 207 R3t(possibly engine, brakes, suspensions from the DS3), would be fantastic if they reach the level of the best Clio R3s customers :D

I... the only difference is, I believe more in a duel with Hanninen.

Well, I can see quite precise weather data for the next 9 days. It is visible that there will be much warmer weather starting form Thursday. Loads of + temperatures. Next 4 days should be warm again. Temperature starts to drop from the 10th of January again and should be on minus side until the end of my maps-line (12th of January). There should be some snowfall during the process and starting from 12-13th of January, the high pressure area forms covering Spain, France, Belgium, Netherlands and most of the Germany. So, that means warm during the day and freezing during the night (snow melts during the day and water freezes on the road during the night).
However, such a long forecast can still change, but this is all what I can read from the maps right now.
So, my forecast 5 days ago. First part was quite OK. And it gets a bit colder on Tuesday indeed. But then another warm air comes in. It dominates until 18th of January and then it looks like another "cold wave" attacks Europe from the North and it looks like for the stages the cold should arrive by 19th of January. Just when the rally begins. Currently the maps are showing completely dry weather starting from this Thursday until the rally. That means still minus degrees during the night and plus during the days. So, if there is still snow left on the sides of the roads then it makes night stages with black ice very difficult.

Let´s hope this absence from (Portugal Telecom) isn´t related to Armindo Araujo's effort to step up to the premiership in the WRC.

Peugeot Portugal and Armindo have "shared" this sponsor (and a big one at that) for a number of years but maybe the economic climate meens they may not want to spread their eggs.

I'm a big fan of both Armindo and Bruno but if this is the case (and i'm just being hypothetical here) it would be very unfair on Bruno and Peugeot who were already very short on budget last year.

That said, I think Armindo also deserves to step up in his career so unless some other big companies become involved maybe one of them will have a tough time getting together a good campaign this year.

Finnish newspaper Turun Sanomat (through editor Heikki Kulta, renown F1 reporter) writes about Kubica's absence:

Renault didn't stop Kubica from driving in Monte Carlo

Robert Kubica didn't step aside from driving at Monte Carlo rally because Renault would've prevented him from driving at other make. This claim was circulated when Kubica's name dropped from the entry list.

Kubica would've wanted a four-wheel drive car for a rally that was predicted to be snowy and icy, but because the French make didn't have one to offer, Polish driver choosed not to participate.

He didn't look after at any other cars, so giving up on Monte didn't cause any fight between the driver and his F1 team.

That was my translation. Here's a Google Translate (http://translate.google.fi/translate?js=n&prev=_t&hl=fi&ie=UTF-8&layout=2&eotf=1&sl=fi&tl=en&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ts.fi%2Ff1%2Fsahkeet%2F188188.h tml) to the original story.

Sure it wasn't the car with most features on it because his budget was really tight to get a S2000. I know it was from PH Sport. And I'm still sure Abarth is slower I saw it with my own eye on Kemmel that there's definately lack of power on that car.

Let's have a survey. Which of the classes/groups of cars outside of the S2000's, the 1600's and the Group 3 N's do you think will be the most competitive?

* 5 R3T
* 5 R3C
* 6 R1B
* 9 R1B
* 6 R2B
* 5 A
* 8 N
* 9 N

You can only pick one.

Don't really think so last time he was in Ypres he was pushing like hell and still got times around 5th place if he had the 207 like Schammel that year he would be for sure have better times than he had with the Abarth.

I think the Abarth is especially badly suited to Ypres stages due to amount of ditch-hooking required and the Abarth's poor suspension travel.

I think Basso was actually aiming to get an Abarth for Monte but this Peugeot was the fall back option.

In my opinion it's also up to gearing which doesn't suit such stage character. But Monte is completely different event and it's stages are much more suibtable for Abarth (if not on snow).

I'd say that almost any of those top 19 seeds could win - it would be hard for Bruno, Wallenwein or Maurin to win, and also the Protons unless they have a large performance boost since last year, however its refreshing to have no idea who out of over 10 drivers will win the event.

Certainly is. Petter has to be favourite but it's by no means a certainty, and it would certainly be impossible to predict the podium.

Monte should once again be the most interesting rally of the year, and one of the year's television sporting highlights too - last time I remember my heart rate actually raising watching any sport on tv was "Turini night" last year!

Looking the long term weather maps it looked very, very promising nearly a week ago already, but now the maps look much better (in terms of rally).
Tuesday: There is already slight chance of snow/rain on Tuesday night (depends on the elevation) on the northernmost stages. But the precipitation will be very light. The temperature should be between +2..+4 degrees at sea-level. that means, everything that is over 700 -800 meters above sea-level should be below 0

Wednesday looks to be dry everywhere. The chance of precipitation is nearly zero.
The temperature continues to decrease and should not be over +2 degrees at sea level. so, everything above 300m should be below zero

Thursday: Early in the morning the temperature continues to drop and should be under 0 all day. There will be quite strong wind from north and north-east. In some stages the temperature can drop below -10 degrees (higher altitudes). There is slight chance of snow on westernmost stages. Chanche of light snow is actually everywhere where the stages took place. The chance of snow increases as the day progresses.

Friday: early in the morning there is very high possibility of snow, everywhere. and no light snow anymore, more like a snowstorm with very strong wind from North-East. As the day progresses, the chance of snow increases and more snow and wind and very cold. -10 in the mountains is high possibility. Take really warm clothes, and windproof clothes with you!

The snow-fall or maybe even a snow-storm might continue until the Saturday afternoon.

So, it looks very, very variable Monte indeed.
Shorts for the recce, autumn clothes for the start of the rally, winter clothes for the second day and arctic, windproof clothes from Thursday afternoon until the end of rally:-)

But those are mountains and everything mights change very quickly. But the general map shows that low pressure area forms south-East from the monte, that should carry cold air and snow to the district where the rally is held!

But then I don't know if he is doing enough of the season to be able to be a challenger.

Elsewhere, and looking on the entry list (as it is the only means I have to access to who is doing Monte Carlo as it is impossible to form your own entry list because it will change so much at every event) I have saved on my PC I would predict that Florian Gonon will be among the Group N racers in the Impreza. Loix should top contender got enough testing, his mentally fully ready for it and has also the experience like Delecour has! Gonon will be one of the best Gr N drivers with Aigner. The 2wd is then more exciting as the Gr N way more contenders there.

Even as a Petter fan I agree that a crash is the most likely outcome! He will have to push the car too hard to keep up with the Fabias of Hanninen and Mikkelsen, and this isn't safe when he has such little knowledge of the car. I expect at least one stunning stage time from him though where he pushes hard but doesn't crash.

My tip for the rally is Sarrazin. He could easily have won in 2009 as he was much faster than Ogier but suffered from a lot of bad luck. In 2010, if I remember well, he won 2 stages and showed good pace but again had one incident which ruined the rally. If the stages are dry then I fully expect him, Kopecky and Loix to be the top 3 cars due to their asphalt skill. If its wet or snowy then the Solbergs, Mikkelsen and Hanninen must be favourites.

Solberg is obviously one of the fastest drivers on the World right now but I cannot understand how Peugeot decided to support him instead of Ogier.

I remember seeing onboard footage of him in last year's Monte Carlo while chasing Hirvonnen and I must say that was the most incredible driving I have seen in a while.

Same - I'm not an Ogier fan but watching him catch up Mikko last year was amazing. Personally I think it was the Monte rally 2010 that matured Ogier into the driver we saw this year - his disappointment when his car broke on him just as he caught Mikko must have really kept his feet on the ground and made him more determined to succeed.

Couple of interesting things from that video; I think I can see 5 Fabias in the SM service area so I guess Mikkelsen is being serviced by the works team here? Also Hennings car is being run by his brother's team.

Top 10 for Henning is unsure.

"He said: “I have not done a test and I have never used the Michelin tyres before. They are 3.5 kilograms lighter than the tyres I had last year and I am not sure what difference that will make to the suspension set-up. I also know these guys in the IRC are very fast. It will not be easy but I try my best.”

What are the weather and road conditions like on tomorrows stages?
Will rubber choice be a big issue or will it be plain tarmac?

It is some kind of Citroen policy that it does not let their official Seb´s drive other makes. Even 207 seems to be not allowed. That is it!

Well, lets say that the weather forecast has turned to very tricky one. Tomorrow morning should be try and there might be some minus degrees. However, there has not been any rain for many days and that should not cause many problems (maybe some black ice on the places where the snow is still covering the ground and its melting water has reached to the road. Starting from stage 3 the temperature might be below 0 everywhere already and some light snow-showers is possibility already. Such snow-showers might continue until Thursday evening. Starting from there, even the hell freezes :-) Possibility of snowfall increases and temperature continues to fall. Did I already mentioned that starting from Thursday, the wind picks up and wind speed might reach to 17-18 m/s (gusts). When you add snowfall to this wind then you can call it as a proper snowstorm.

Hopefully the weather is good enough for the Helicams. However, it does not look good for them during the last two days.

Ilka Minor is back codriving Henning. AFAIK she had somekind of injury after a crash in Austrian championship rally, does anyone have more information about what happened and what kind of crash it was?

SkodaSRT
18th January 2011, 17:52
Minor was partnering Manfred Stohl on the ARBO Rallye Steiermark when they left the road on a fast right-hander and crashed into a bank. The sudden stop is understood to have caused Minor’s injury, which is likely to keep her out of competition for several weeks. Ilka Minor suffered a fractured vertebra during the crash.

It was with her long term driver Stohl jr. in the Austrian championship (ARBO Steiermark Rallye) in a CNG-Mitsu sponsored by OMV. Nothing big, just a "minor" crash ;-) but ended with a spine injury :-( broken 12th back vertebra, fixed with a metal plate in a 2 hours surgical session. Raised another discussion about the safety of "HANS".
