Surely US mid-terms?
I wouldn't hold out much hope for an 'ass-kicker'.. Both US political parties promise the same thing, every candidate will 'go to Washington to clean up our politics, keep government out of your lives, cut wasteful spending, and live up to small-town values..' Then they get there, and the exact opposite happens. Every single time. Nothing gets done because of partisan gridlock and corporate lobbying, and because US voters appear to be backing candidates in primaries that are more and more ideologically opposed this looks set to continue.
Besides, who out of the two parties looks a contender for new leadership? Sarah Palin? A woman who's credibility crashes everytime she opens her mouth at one of those after-dinner speeches where she charges $1000 a go? On the Democrat side I can't think of anyone, not that it makes much difference.. Obama appears to have been a massive disappointment to his 'core-vote' so far, but this is hardly surprising after all the hype.

Maybe this time their Great Leader will be someone who can at least find his own ass with both hands and an ass map. It's difficult to kick ass when you can't find any.

You must be talking about Obama again.
Quite frankly Eki, what you think of American leaders is an endorsement of them by proxy usually.
All I know is I am glad I am on this side of the North American border. We have a PM that has a clue, and even tho I have my issues with some things he is doing (he is a politician, show me one you are really happy with, you either on the payroll or he just was elected last night), I will have to say he is going along pretty good. Canada's bank system sailed right through the choppy water of the recession, and our nation had real serious growth in the economy last quarter. So much so, the interest rates on the Bank of Canada went up half a percent. So.....if I lived in the US...I would be looking for a new hope too, and it wouldn't be Palin. Personally, I think the US would have been far better off with Rudy Giulani....
BP wouldn't have been dinking around for a month before the President said anything. 2 days after the disaster, Giulani would be kicking @ss and taking names.....

In real life I do not pick on people because their country did this or that. We all have skeletons in our closets. Eki's case is special to me, though. He's so obsessed with his hatred of certain individuals and things in this world that I truly enjoy giving him hard time, especially when he exposes his weaknesses with cheap remarks.

I see Dan Quayle is still alive. Maybe he's available? He has made good judgments in the future, maybe we'll see what they are:

Compared to Biden, Quayle is a Rhodes scholar.
The only thing that hurt Quayle was the liberal press attacking him; if the press paid one-hundreth as much attention to Biden, he would be the laughing stock he should be for being a fool with a microphone.

My big problem with every New Leader is that the person who delivers it, always chucks it in my rose bushes, which is a pain as they're quite thorny. Also the two cats next door "Earl Grey" and "Big Fat" tend to want to sleep on top of it.
My advice is, that if you want to get a New Leader, then you should first consider buying a pair of gardening gloves, and possibly a small can of tuna to feed the cats with.

More than likely Rudy would have gone down to the Gulf and given the same speech about ten times about how he handled NY City during 9/11. BP would have found a quick fix just to get him to shut up.
Great prosecutor. Good mayor (IMO). But he should have run for governor of NY and left it at that. He ran a terrible Presidential campaign and that's why he lost (really got his ass handed to him in New Hampshire, as I recall). But give him one job to do and I'd say he could do it well. My uncle dealt with Rudy when he was an Associate AG in the Reagan administration - he said Giuliani was a distinctly sharp and focused individual. I think he would have made a great choice to head the SEC, whether under W. Bush (when the SEC was surfing porn sites and ordering boxes of donuts rather than doing their jobs) or under Obama (where they want to demonize the entire investment community to satisfy the populist rage).

I think Rudy would be engaged from the first day of the criss, and if BP didn't have solutions, he would be on their ass like white on rice.
Rudy ran a terrible campaign, and Republicans at large don't always understand what to do with a moderate Republican like him, but the thing is, Rudy is decisive. Love him or hate him, he doesn't dither, he reacts on his gut. He doesn't need focus groups or the press to badger him into thinking one way or another. Well, that sounds tough, but what does it really mean? Other than Don Rudy suggesting that he still knows a guy who knows a guy who knows a guy (who worked with his dad in "the family"), what enforcement powers would Guiliani employ to either stop the leak or get BP to work faster/better?
There was an interesting debate on Bloomberg about this yesterday. The consensus was... there is no consensus on what the solution is or should be.

Even though he took down my one time hero, Mike Milken, I always admired Giuliani. But you and I both know that "moderate" Republicans are going the way of the Dodo bird in this country. Giuliani picked the wrong decade to run under that banner.
God forbid anyone actually understands where Obama is going.....
Thus far, I'd say he's muffed this (from a PR standpoint) and not appeared to be upset enough about the situation. One could even say that he's Bushed this one. He just hasn't been caught in a "you're doing a heck of a job, Brownie" moment yet.
But as the expert panel concluded on Bloomberg, other than stop gap measures, there are no KNOWN fixes for this one. So whether Giuliani threatened to send Hayward to sleep with the fishes or put him on a boat to Gitmo, that oil would still keep spewing out.
The dumbest thing I've heard so far is this suggestion that BP should not pay its dividend this quarter. Why? PR. Nothing but PR. BP has plenty of cash on its books (around $7 billion) and they have access to tens of billions more. Only if this situation continues or gets worse should the BoD even consider that. From the left and the right, too much of what's being said is just feel good talk, IMO. Killing off the company doesn't solve this problem.

Giulani would give the American people the feeling he not only was engaged in the problem, but he was holding BP's feet to the fire. Giulani probably would have had the US Navy's best and brightest there and their deep sea submersables. You cannot tell me the US Navy and US Army Corp of Engineers don't have people that couldn't be thinking outside the norm here. BP spent about the first week trying to downplay how bad this was, and have spent a fortune trying to make their PR look good. You think Giulani isn't reading these guys the riot act from about day 2? The White House would be on em like a rash if Rudy was in charge.....and perception of how this is handled is 80% of winning it with the public....
Even though he took down my one time hero, Mike Milken, I always admired Giuliani. But you and I both know that "moderate" Republicans are going the way of the Dodo bird in this country. Giuliani picked the wrong decade to run under that banner.
He was getting a lot of bad advice, and he never understood the right of the party. That said, How the hell then do you explain the win of McCain in the Primaries? That guy is to the left of Rudy on some issues....and carried a lot of baggage Rudy wasn't carrying. So to say he was to the left of his party at the wrong time in history is a misnomer. He just ran a retarded campaign where he conceded front runner status on the gamble he could win big states further along. That only works if you have the money and machine to destroy your opponent. It has zero to do with his ideology IMO.
Thus far, I'd say he's muffed this (from a PR standpoint) and not appeared to be upset enough about the situation. One could even say that he's Bushed this one. He just hasn't been caught in a "you're doing a heck of a job, Brownie" moment yet.
If he says "Make no mistake" one more time, I am going to puke. Obama is just too passive. He lets the situation fester and boil...and then comes out and tries to make ONE speech, and ride off into the sunset. THIS wont work on this one....That said, he didn't congratulate an idiot for botching the job.....
But as the expert panel concluded on Bloomberg, other than stop gap measures, there are no KNOWN fixes for this one. So whether Giuliani threatened to send Hayward to sleep with the fishes or put him on a boat to Gitmo, that oil would still keep spewing out.
True, but Giulani wouldn't be so accepting of their excuses either. HE would be riding em as I said....He is a problem solver. THAT is his MO...and that rep was sealed with his leadership in NYC even before 9/11

Of course it is PR. News Flash, it isn't the public that BP has to win over, it is the Obama administration, who while not looking very engaged is ITCHING to go to war with Big oil. The left of the party HATES Big oil and everything they stand for. You really think the optics of paying dividends out while this mess goes on is going to do anything but pour gas on the fire? 5 bucks says if they announce a dividend of any amount worth having this quarter, you will hear it from the administration. This is exactly the optics of how the leftwing radicals would LOVE to go after capitalism and no one loves the big oil companies unless they work for one, or get the dividends from one....

All that might be true, Mark, but we'll never know what Rudy would do in this case. He's on the sidelines - and will probably remain there. Maybe he could build a third party base and do OK in 2012. Maybe he still has a chance to sit in the big chair. If the GOP nominates a true wingnut (which is quite possible) then the sane center of America might give a hard look (again) to a third party candidate in 2012. And there are a lot more people in the sane center than on the loony left or the wingnut right. We just don't make as much noise as the bomb throwers.
But as it stands right now, to say what Rudy would or wouldn't do is pure speculation. I could say that Ross Perot would do this or do that, but there's no way to really know what he would do either.

Can you tell me exactly what it was that Helen Thomas said that (supposedly) makes her "anti-Semitic"? Since Semites aren't a race, and also include Arabs, I've always found the modern/PC application of that term to be amusing. But anyway, I only heard a snippet and the only thing I heard was her say that Israel should get the hell out of Palestine. Did she say something else, or are we back to what I've been saying for a very long time: to NOT be a pro-Zionist makes one anti-Semitic?

She said jews should go 'back home' to Germany and Poland. I don't consider it an anti-semitic remark, but rather one that conviniently forgets what made some jews run away from those places. She was in her twenties during WW2 ffs!
Not directly linked (or maybe it is, I haven't been following her), I think a lot of anti-semites hide their hatred toward jews behind hatred towards Israel which is more PC nowadays. Her comment wasn't anti-semitic per se, but showed a huge amount of hate for a large group of people nontheless.

On January 27, 1998, Yehuda Bauer, Director of Research at Yad Vashem, concluded his Holocaust commemoration address at the Bundestag in Germany with the following:
“Thou shalt not be a perpetrator.”
“Thou shalt not be a victim.”
“And Thou shalt never, but never be a bystander.”
It is remarkable that Bauer saved the strongest admonition for bystanders.
On Friday May 27, at the White House Jewish Heritage Celebration, Helen Thomas, the “Dean” of the White House Press Corps, answered a journalist’s request for an opinion on Israel:
“Tell them to get the hell out of Palestine. Remember, these people are occupied and it’s their land…not German and not Poland.”
“So, where should they go?”
“Go home. Poland, Germany.”
“So, you think the Jews should go back to Poland and Germany?”
“And America and everywhere else.”

And I agree. Poland and Germany in 2010 aren't the same as they were in 1942. Returning would be safe. The wish for other refugees, at least here in Finland, seems to be the conditions in their countries of origin get safe so they could return home some day.

Ha! That's what I call an experiment. As history is a long chain of conquests and migratory waves just imagine how interesting it would be to follow that woman's advice and that everybody return to his roots....Living like gipsies in caravans...Leaving our homes, careers, friends, packing all our stuff and going back to where our ancestors used to live....Leaving USA and let it to what remained from indian population....
Starting with myself I announce you that tomorrow morning I'll leave for Greece. Just with my clothes on, the way that my parents families came to Romania in 1925 and how they were forced to leave that territory for another area in 1940.

The Americas will be empty as the American Indians will have to go back to Asia.
I guess SOD will have crawl back into what ever hole he came out of.
We could draw the limit so that everybody return to the countries where they were born. Helen Thomas was born in Winchester, Kentucky.
According to Finnish TV, Israel is now allowing cola drinks and potato chips/crisps to Gaza again. Wow, that should keep the Palestinians alive. Unless Hamas makes cola powered potato chip rockets out of them.

If thats the case, I'd guess the vast majority of the "Palestinian refugees" aren't really Palestinian. I'd also guess the majority of Israelis are Israeli. You might be on to something here Eki.

OK, after reading the transcript, I can understand the objection to her comments. Touche. Perhaps Helen Thomas might want to enter politics, though it's late in life. Wonder if she'd like to be the next governor of Arizona?
As for anti-Semites also hating Israel, I'm sure that is the case. It would stand to reason that a person who doesn't like Jews wouldn't like Israel. I don't think anyone would take issue with that. What I take issue with is the near automatic assumption on the part of radical Zionists that anyone who isn't pro-Zionist is anti-Semtic. It's a cheap debate strategy, based solely on emotion. And even though it is effective, it is illogical: Every pistol is a gun, but not every gun is a pistol. ;)

30% of Jews and other non-Arabs in Israel are foreign born. That's about 2 million people. They could leave and make room for the return of Palestinian refugees.

You do realize how illogical and stupid that statement sounds?

So how many Palestinian refewgees were actually born in Palestine? A lot of time has gone by.

I don't know. But we could include their offspring, just like we could include the offspring of foreign born in Israel. In the 1948 exodus, about 700,000 were forced to leave their homes and in the 1967 exodus about 300,000.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1948_Palestinian_exodus
The 1948 Palestinian exodus (Arabic: الهجرة الفلسطينية, al-Hijra al-Filasṭīnīya), also known as Nakba (Arabic: النكبة, an-Nakbah), meaning the "disaster", "catastrophe", or "cataclysm",[1] occurred when between 650,000 and 750,000 Palestinian Arabs were expelled from their homes by Yishuv or Israeli forces, during the creation of the state of Israel and the civil war that preceded it.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1967_Palestinian_exodus
The 1967 Palestinian exodus refers to the flight of around 280,000 to 325,000 Palestinians[1] out of the territories occupied by Israel during and in the aftermath of the Six-Day War including the demolition of the Palestinian villages of Imwas, Yalo, and Bayt Nuba, Surit, Beit Awwa, Beit Mirsem, Shuyukh, Jiftlik, Agarith and Huseirat and the "emptying" of the refugee camps of ʿAqabat Jabr and ʿEin Sulṭān.[2] The Special Committee heard allegations of the destruction of over 400 Arab villages, but no evidence in corroboration was furnished to the Special Committee to investigate Israeli practices affecting the human rights of the population of the occupied territories.[3]

A clever move. Kill them slowly as it's well known that this stuff is not quite good for health.

Not at all. But I'm sure you could top it without even trying. :p
I actually support the overall concept of the Arizona law. As long as it applies to any and ALL illegal immigrants (and I believe it does), I support the overall law, even if there are some fine details that probably need to be ironed out. Whether it's a Mexican national making a run for the U.S. border in the dead of night (and ignoring our laws), or Israelis building houses on disputed land (and using a decades old guilt trip to sell it to the rest of the world), I take issue with squatters and interlopers. But given your objection here, I take it that your position isn't quite as consistent as mine?

True. And it's difficult to prove to be a genocide.
