Here in Catalonia Saint George, or Sant Jordi as he's called, is also the patron. It's a big celebration here, not a holiday, but certainly a holiday atmosphere. I was at the school this morning to see the kids do some traditional dancing, and the day is like Saint Valentine's, where men give women a rose and women give men a book (not a bad deal).
England should celebrate Saint George's Day. While it's possible to argue about the empire etc, I think England has also a lot of positive things to celebrate. Most international sports were invented there, things that bring a lot to people all over the world, to mention just one.

You can tell it's election time. Boris Johnson says St George would have been a Conservative - http://blog.conservatives.com/index.php/2010/04/23/st-george-would-have-been-a-conservative/

He's the patron Saint of Belarus, too. Only we celebrate it according to the orthodox calendar on May 6. There's another day of his on December 9.
Happy holiday!
