Rally Islas Canarias joins IRC schedule
Eurosport Events, the promoter of the Intercontinental Rally Challenge, has today announced that Rally Islas Canarias ‘Trofeo El Corte Ingles’ will replace Rally Principe de Asturias on the 2010 IRC schedule.

The event will become the fourth round of the 12-event IRC series and take place from 28 April-1 May.

A one-year agreement has been reached between Eurosport Events and the Canarias Sport Club with an option for a two-year extension.

Confirmation of Rally Islas Canarias’ inclusion in the IRC is the result of a successful collaboration between Eurosport Events and Real Federacion Espanola de Automovilismo. This was instigated after the organisers of Rally Principe de Asturias decided they could not honour the terms of their agreement with Eurosport Events and declared they would no longer host the IRC round, which had been due to run from 9-11 September.

Marcello Lotti, the General Manager of the IRC, said: “We are grateful to President Carlos Gracia Fuertes, of Real Federacion Espanola de Automovilismo, who supported the IRC in finding a quick and solid alternative solution after Rally Principe de Asturias encountered financial issues. Rally Islas Canarias enjoys a good reputation and benefits from a strong organisational background. We are hopeful this partnership will not be a one-off experience.”

Rally Islas Canarias is an all-tarmac event and is one of the most famous rounds of the Spanish asphalt championship. The rally organisers are making special arrangements for IRC international regular teams to transport their cars and equipment to the event.

The revised 2010 Intercontinental Rally Challenge schedule is as follows:

Round: Event (Country) Date (Surface)
01: Rallye Automobile Monte-Carlo (Monaco) 19-23 January (Asphalt)
02: Rally Internacional de Curitiba (Brazil) 04-06 March (Gravel)

Their schedule will be quite tight to get the cars back to Europe and prepare for Canarias and then to the ship again. Logistically it seems that it fits nearly perfectly. maybe couple of reserve days as well if everything goes as planned.

Good luck to Gran Canaria! After the heady days of El Corte Ingles its nice to see them getting top line rallying back on the island. If I wasnt off to Barbados I might just have gone to watch as have enjoyed my previous trips!

If someone decides to come and needs some type of additional information, which it does not hesitate to ask here or to send a private message.

Apart from the Rally IRC, there will be a rally separate, where they were informing vehicles that are not accepted by the FIA for the IRC or for ERC Cup WEST. In this rally can take part the Spanish/normal GT, the Spanish N+, as well as WRC's, Kit Car's, Groups B or vehicles that have lost the homologation FIA or without homologation that they can take part in the Canary Championship (so called Groups TA or TN).

Sergio-Rallymax

I believe that the door of the porter, the back doors and the crystals are lightened, this in the N4 +.
On the other hand, in the Spanish championship the S2000 they can run with a reduction of 50kg. If they wanted to run with this reduction they would have to go out in the second rally.

Despite it's late addition to the 2010 IRC calendar, the Rally Islas Canarias looks set to boast a good entry after Eurosport Events arranged for the team's cars and equipment to be shipped straight from Argentina to the Spanish-owned Islands. Kronos Racing have confirmed that reigning IRC Champion Kris Meeke will participate, as will the works Skoda drivers Jan Kopecky and Juho Hanninen.
Nasser Al-Attiyah will also make the trip with his RGRS Fabia and it is though that Andreas Mikkelsen will begin his IRC programme early, probably using the M-Sport Fiesta that Villagra brought home 5th in Argentina last weekend. Skoda UK have yet to confirm their plans, but it seems more likely than not that they will send Guy Wilks to the first pure asphalt event of the 2010 season.

Rally Islas Canarias takes place from 29th April-1st May.

The circuit exists, but from 2003 it is not in use (by chance, it was the year in which Miguel Campos visited and win the Rally).
It is a shame that is not in use this year, since it would be relatively easy to broadcast it for Eurosport.

From Madeira with Binter-Sata it was going out for about 200 €.
If for some chance one you were coming and needing something, it warns that it would help you in everything possible.

As for it of the kart circuit, for youtube there are several clips on this special one. I itself did a video of the polish driver Holowczyc and he goes out in the karting often.

Interest grows in Rally Islas Canarias

Rally Islas Canarias, which was recently confirmed as a new addition to the Intercontinental Rally Challenge calendar, is set to attract a strong entry when it runs for a 34th time from 29 April-1 May.

In addition to a host of local drivers and those who will travel from the Spanish mainland, Peugeot UK has confirmed it will send a 207 Super 2000 for its defending IRC champions Kris Meeke and Paul Nagle (pictured), while Irishmen Daniel Barry and Martin Brady are planning to take part in the same Mitsubishi Lancer they used on Rallye Automobile Monte-Carlo in January.

Skoda Motorsport has also confirmed that it will contest the fourth round of the IRC series with regular pilots Jan Kopecky and Juho Hanninen, who heads the IRC drivers’ table by five points. They will drive a brace of Fabia Super 2000s.

Kopecky said: “I prefer to drive on asphalt so I am looking forward to doing this rally. I think it can be very good for me.”

Thierry Neuville announced yesterday that he will begin his six-event IRC programme on Rally Islas Canarias at the wheel of a Kronos Racing-run Peugeot 207, backed by the Belgium and Luxembourg Peugeot importers.

Several IRC 2WD Cup crews have also expressed an interest in competing on the famous asphalt rally, which is based on the island of Gran Canaria.

Yes, maybe. But i think its strange if he do so. Then he will miss important points.
I know that Moya(his teamboss in Nupel) and M-Sport Wilson are good friends.

Last year Hevia didnt compete in the spanish championship before in the end of the season. He had no points to fight for. Thats why he did drive in the FIA-class.
Also Fuster did drive last year, he drove the second factory Abarth, but went off on ss2 if I remember correctly.

Al-Attiyah vows to start Rally Islas Canarias

Nasser Al-Attiyah says he will do all he can to be on the starting ramp for Rally Islas Canarias later this month.

The Qatari driver, who made his Intercontinental Rally Challenge debut in Argentina in March, is due to contest the world championship-counting Rally New Zealand one week after the Gran Caria-based event.

Reconnaissance for the rally in New Zeland starts two days after the IRC event finishes, meaning Al-Attiyah will face a race against time to complete the journey.

In a further complication, Al-Attiyah will also needs to secure a replacement car because the Skoda Fabia Super 2000 he used in Argentina is being transported to New Zealand.

He said: “I really want to do the rally in Canarias because I want to do more IRC events and got more experience of driving on Tarmac. I will do everything I can, including getting another car, to be there. I think it can be possible but it won’t be easy.”

Wilks impresses Wittmann from afar

Franz Wittmann has revealed how he relied on the official Intercontinental Rally Challenge website to keep up to date with the series during the recent South America double-header.

Wittmann is contesting several IRC events this season in an Interwetten Racing-run Peugeot 207 Super 2000. However, the Austrian driver did not enter either rally in Brazil or Argentina in order to concentrate on the European rounds.

He said: “I followed every stage and every split [time] and it’s ballistic how good the competition is getting in the IRC with so many good drivers taking part.

“There were no big surprises for me in Brazil or Argentina because I expected Kris Meeke and Juho Hänninen to do very well. But Guy Wilks [pictured] really did a tremendous job in his Škoda and I really think he can be a main contender for the title.”

Wittmann added: “It was really hard having to stay home when my colleagues were doing those rallies so I’m looking forward more than ever to come back.”

It does not look very promising He takes part in Vogelsberg rally in Germany in 16-17 April and it looks like it is going to get too tight with the time. He cannot transport his car with reasonable costs with such a short time I think.

So do we have any confirmation of what weight limits the Spanish S2000s will run on Canarias?

If they run the Spanish limits then I suppose they will not be eligible for IRC points.

What happened on Asturias last year, were these weight limits the same then?

eloyf1
14th April 2010, 12:04
Last year there were those limits, and they ran with FIA specs.

I suppose that, as Fuster will fly anyway, and Ojeda said he wouldn't go to Canarias with his Gr.N+ (Despite organisators insist in the fact he will be there...), they will go ahead with FIA specs.

With or without, they will fight for second position (well, if there are no neutralisations...), so it would be stupid not to put the 50 kilos and lose the only chance of the year to be shown on TV...

If You have a look again in the list You can see that there is no FIA priority for Kris Meeke although he has it. That's why I think that organizers hasn't notice he was given it later. I know it's not mandatory to seed FIA priority drivers on top but it's recommended and widely used.

Anyway it's not really important :)

Fuster doesn't like his 911 GT3, he only bought it because he thought GT cars were much faster than S2000 (typical Spanish whiner), but for example, last year both Vallejo and Canarian Santi Concepción beat him in this rally...

The 911 doesn't fit him as good as for Vallejo, but with good-grip Canarian roads, he will win among Spanish drivers anyway.

He sold his 911 GT3, so I think he doesn't has any car... There are lots of machinery in Canary (Vallejo's old 911 GT3 is there as well), but I imagine shipping costs, added to two-days rally cost, is too difficult to afford for Canarian drivers.

Moreover, nearly each island hast its own championship, then people isn't used to race in other islands.

If this Porsche drives a little bit straighter and little better lines, it will be a big pain in the ass of the S2000-s. The Acceleration of the Porsche seems to be a way much better than S2000s as well.

I do not know, how about IRC, but it's a pity, that in WRC rallys they do not show non-FIA priority drivers time's amongs others. Some of the times are very competitive. If I remember correctly, Gardemeister showd very good time with BMW M3 in NORF.

Also tyre brand would be nice to see on the result list, to see if any brabd works better on the day.

Fuster fastest in the Porsche on SS1 but only by 0.1s.

SS2 times should be coming through now.

I'm very surprised he has made this much progress on tarmac. Now I'm more convinced he can take the title this year.

Has he taken a Latvala and done some karting or racing to improve on Asphalt ?

Mirek

In fact he has done a lot of testing on asphalt in CZ but our asphalt is very different to Canarian.

RS
30th April 2010, 11:11
I think a year of driving in IRC and a lot of asphalt testing will be what has helped Juho. Kind of proves pWRC is not a balanced enough championship otherwise he would have been able to do it from the start.

But kudos to Juho, some Finns never quite get the hang of it.

only the openning stage but nice to see Bruno doing better than Spanish drivers like Hevia and Vallejo!

Yes.. for the first time in a rally outside Portugal, Bruno is having a really decent pace!

Congratulations to him!

Maybe Canarian roads have a similar grip to Madeiran roads... and he is very used to this conditions. anyway, very good pace.

Bad luck strikes again? What were the other ones?

Madeira 2007: Engine problems on SS2. Ran 2 or 3 stages on 3 cylinders

Sanremo 2007: Head-on colision with Brice Tirabassi's car with was standed across the road after an off

Portugal 2008: Went off slightly (his mistake) but lost 3+ minutes.

Madeira 2008: Puncture. Lost 3minutes. Was leading.

Asturias 2008: Blown engine on SS4.

Azores 2009: Transmission issues since ss2 or 3, can´t remember exactly. Was on 3 wheel drive for most of the first day.

Not a bad record.

As Madeira is European Championship Event it MUST have restriction on recce as it is part of championship regulations.

But don't worry, such violations happen everywhere...

i can tell you that that last year was the first year that were people in the beggining of the stages controling and the first year that people have gps in the recce car...the years before you had two days of recce and you could do as many runs as you can...i give you a example, in chao da lagoa is a part that is only open sometimes and you have to recce in different hours anda every, i tell you everyone done much more runs than 2 and the organisers were there...last year was different , i know what i am saying...

Don't get me wrong but if some rule is not controled, it doesn't automatically mean there is no such rule.

If there are no policemen on the roads with radar it also doesn't mean that allowed speed is unlimited although You can drive that way ;)
