View Full Version : How lucky we are

It just struck me, having seen clips of the opening race of the 1978 season the other day commentated on by Harry Carpenter from the BBC's London studio, how lucky we are with F1 coverage today. That was it 32yrs ago.

At the moment I'm being kept up to date by the Autosport live coverage of FP2, have streaming live video from the BBC, and have tweets galore from journalists, teams, presenters and commentators direct from Bahrain coming through as we speak.

How things change :p :s mokin:

Do you not find in a way that sometimes it can detract from it all though? I mean I like the coverage of this McLaren wing thing because back in the day you'd probably only find out about how this sort of thing worked months later. Now someone with the knowledge can tell you how it works within minutes.

Oh and also the other problem is that back in the day you generally had to know your stuff to be in a magazine or on TV and whilst that's still true, and Arrows, Ioan or Henners can start up a blog and whether or not the stuff they say is logical or factual has little bearing on whether people get to read it or not.

I do agree with you, the coverage today does have a lot of good points to it :)

The depth of coverage has improved immensely since the BBC took over too.
Back the day, I had to buy Autosport or F1 News to get background info on Formula 1. But you don't need to do that now we have the internet.

Having loads of info is nice of course, but I'm dying to see and hear the cars in live action again! Live TV coverage hasn't improved much in recent decades. Actually it was more available around here in the 90s. I guess it's too expensive to show all the practice sessions nowadays. Even RTL will only start showing stuff tomorrow.

I've been watching live pictures, listening to excellent commentary with input from almost the whole BBC team and augmented by information direct from the teams, watching live timing and my sidebar automatically updates Tweets from about 40 people actually at the track.

Honestly I don't get information overload whatsoever, I'm only uspset that I don't have enough space on my monitor for the McLaren live service. A second PC / monitor will appear in time for tomorrow's sessions! :D

Oh, and another telly for the onboards on Sunday!

That's what I can immersive coverage ;)

If I wanted to be naughty I'd have put the F1 up on the two 40 inch Samsung LCD's we have here at the place I'm temping at and perhaps wheel over another one as well but that would be silly :D

I do wonder whether F1 fans realise how lucky they are with the amount of coverage the sport gets. Mainstream TV, Radio, Newspapers, magazines, blogs, podcasts, etc
Most of the other Motorsport series would kill to get 10% of that coverage.

Here's my timing / Twitter monitor. Excuse the crappy cameraphone piccy quality:

Do it!

I've almost persuaded Susy that we need a bigger TV in the guest bedroom. Naturally it'd be convenient for us to bring it downstairs and use it for a mosaic of data during GP weekends, but that's mere coincidence ;)

Have Richer Sounds got a sale on? :andrea:

Nah. If I was in charge I would so do it.

They're going to set up a panel of 4 of these 40" screens up.
1 to show the email inbox plus a dashboard showing call volumes and calls which have escalated statuses
1 to show the statuses of various nodes of the network
1 just for a live BBC/Sky 24 hour live news feed
and I can't remember what the other one will be for.

But imagine have 4 40" screens to work with! :D

Lack of information was a problem years ago.
Nowadays the problem for hardcore fans is the huge amount of information.
10 years ago was a nice balance IMO.

It's a non-reflective matte finish screen. Though I guess the casing is shiny :p

I wouldn't mind actual coverage or real news, but the company that broadcasts F1 and WRC here has gone from irritating to laughable, especially in their internet news section, the Ilta-mtv3.
Todays top sofar is http://www.mtv3.fi/urheilu/f1/uutiset.shtml/arkistot/f1/2010/03/1077339

Schumi looks at Ferrari pit

Mercedes driver M Schumaher takes a good long look at his ex team's paddock before todays free practice
Another gem was

Häkkinen surprises Dennis

And of course this one: http://www.mtv3.fi/urheilu/f1/uutiset.shtml/arkistot/f1/2010/03/1077182

Hamilton destroys his tyres quickly
Lewis Hamiltons McLaren ate up it's rear tyres very quickly in the second free practice
Hamilton complained to his team on the radio that his rear tyres are shot
And that's the whole bleeding story, on the main bloody headlines of F1-section.

We certainly are 'lucky' that humanity is going forward, even though there will be a hefty price we will pay for this, soon.

No, it's an apple. I believe Sir Isaac Newton made some fundamental errors and I've been challenging his so called "laws" since I was a small child.

We produce better technology everyday, which is good especially as far as health care is considered, but the main purpose of this seems to be the desire to sell more and make more money with little regard to the sustainability of this model on the long term.
But hey this thread is about the wonderful possibilities that technology gives us to enjoy F1, sells lots of adverts and make a few select richer.

if we are looking into the future two things

1) HD sasp
2) watch F1 racing on the internet such as Youtube, wrc put classic epsiodes on youtube now, http://www.youtube.com/show/worldrallychampionship?feature=uksp and also now the IPL (cricket) they streamed live on YouTube, http://www.youtube.com/IPL if mr E intrested in it
