If you wanted a test drive anyway, then why not. Otherwise it's an afternoon out where you get to mess around, with no real intention of buying. I bet the salesmen don't really like it as I'm sure they get people turning up just for the money with no intention of buying.
And no, it's not a USA thing. When I test drove my first Fiesta in 2004, which I was going to do anyway, they gave me 4 tickets to see 'Thunderbirds' at the cinema. I didn't go to see the film.

I would take 25 bucks to test drive a Mazda 3. I test drove one for free last fall! I want my money now....lol
