I think thats a safety meeting .meaning they tell and remind everyone to be careful of the patch, try to avoid it and stay concentrated about avoiding the big one. Maybe even reminding the slower ones to let the fast ones race. Even as recently as this weekend we've seen this before.
Or they could be saying this will be the last time we red flag the race for this reason.Or maybe they don't like the way the new patch is looking ..

15th February 2010, 01:59
That was about 120 laps of good racing followed by an embarasment to racing. At least ISC can no longer put off repaving Daytona.

But those GWC's were total bull. There was a crash in turn 3 on lap 198 as the leader (Biffle) was exiting turn 4. A lap at Daytona takes 48 seconds so they can stay green for another 20 seconds with no unnecessary danger to the drivers. Instead caution comes out before Biffle can take the white flag and we have these GWC wreckfests. As far as I'm concerned, Biffle won that race and I didn't bother watching the rest.

I must confess that I watched the Daytona 500. I had stated on these forums that for me, the Sprint Car Series consisted of the 32 non restrictor-plate series races; but I was so starved for racing that I watched the race that I first attended in 1968.

I did see some improvement in that they cars did eventually string out into single file, strung out, racing. To me, the double or triple file racing throughout the entire event is an abomonation.

But hey, that's just me.

I too Lee Roy enjoyed the race when they strung out a bit more. When it was warmer, they had to drive the cars and they were all over the place. Fast guys were still moving up (Dinger did a great job coming through the pack) and slow guys dropped back, but it wasn't 3 wide with their hair on fire until the two red flags hit. THat said, it was a fun finish and watching Jr. go from 10th to 2nd with hardly any help was pretty interesting.

A great win for Jamie Mac. Kudos to him...and as for ISC: ARE YOU PEOPLE ON GLUE???? That patch was a joke the first time......and while I understand the rain was part of the problem, and an old wore out racetrack is vulnerable, I think it is time you repaved (I know the drivers HATE fresh asphalt) but do it with an asphalt that is coarse and mimics the wore out tracks that guys like Carl Edwards and Jr. just love...

slorydn1
15th February 2010, 05:57
All in all it was a great race. I could have done without the 2+hrs of red flags to fix a wore out race track, and the 2nd gwc left me a little cold, but it was a step in the right direction. Plus any race that the 48 DNF's in is a great race anyway, but thats just my opinion I'm sure. :p :

Like several of the other guys I always see on the Indycar forum here, I watched because I was starved for racing.... Race was pretty good - if not a bit over-managed... The red flags were an absolute disgrace - The premier race on the premier track of the premier series and they end up making Champcar look downright prepared and professional?? I also wonder if the multiple green, white, checkers are a good idea - it is sort of entertaining however it seems to breed wrecks and even more important, it got my wife upset because the race NEVER seemed to end......

Seriously, if NASCAR is doing so well, spend some $$ and pave the mother track....

Can't say anything about this race is going to draw me back to NASCAR this year unless I am pretty bored - still prefer the open wheelers and sports cars.....

Just remember Chris, if ChampCar or the IRL had a simliar incident, the NASCAR boosters who are blind to anything but NASCAR would have been highly critical. The truth is, these things do happen, and when you factor in NASCAR's best races come on rough old tracks, there still will be a reluctance to repave unless there is some way of preserving the raceability of the surface. Smooth pavement is no good for NASCAR, the rough old ovals put on the best shows...

Congrats to McMurray

Better plate race

Yellows breed yellows, the new GWC is a joke as far as I'm concerned.

O/T - hope Kyle drives a pink Toyota this year and a pink race suit to go with it :D

Enjoyed the race last night, although the red flags were a total joke. You would have thought that NASCAR would have made a closer examination of the track knowing how much rain Daytona had over the past week.

Congrats to McMurray, a great win and I can NOW see why the Americans go nuts over Earnhardt Jr, his 2nd place was wonderful to watch. Wonder what Truex Jr was thinking watching McMurray win in his old car?

I just realized a solution that would solve the restrictor plate problem forever: tear up the pavement and make Daytona and Talladega dirt tracks. :)

Anything would be better than their current configuration.

. . . . and they end up making Champcar look downright prepared and professional??

It was bad, but not THAT bad.

not for a harvick fan. if was a pure joy, to dismay, to joy to WTF, to Oh my god what a move for the lead , to did that just happen and he got screwed again.

ugh

That incident with the pavement could be easily repaired by resurfacing Turn 1 and 2 now. The motorcycles don't use that part of the track (they have a short link off the International Horseshoe that joins the Superstretch). But the officials said, "Let's try everything." That's an attitude that works. The teams even worked on it. What helped more was as the sun set and the shade disappeared, as the lights came on, the evidence of the repairs was easier to spot.

There have been five Daytona 500 finishes that have ended after sunset, and last-lap passes have won four consecutive night 500's (Harvick passes Martin, Lap 202, Newman passes Stewart 2008, Kenseth passes Sadler 2009 Lap 146, McMurray passes Harvick on Lap 207 but Biffle grabs the lead in Turn 1 on Lap 208, McMurray passes back).

I think this finish has fans saying, "Finish the 500 at night! Go 4 PM." Besides, a 4 PM start may have prevented the pavement issue as cooler pavement may have prevented the breakup in question.

The Daytona 200 uses the long road course again. They just limit the race to slower bikes so the tires last. Of course the superbike class is still using the motorcycle course and no one is quite sure what the premier event of Bike Week is supposed to be. NASCAR's attempt to buy AMA Road Racing and NASCARize it has proven to be a sound failure.

Bobby, why would they go BACK to 4pm? First off, it is COLD often at night still in Febuary, so I am sure THAT didn't thrill anyone finishing up after 7pm. Second, the track came up because it is old, cracked, and the ground is super saturated. They went back to the 1/130 start because last few years the usual afternoon rain (a regular occurence in that part of Florida most years) ended 2 races that had the later start time, but the traditional start time almost NEVER got rained on in the 50 year history of the race.

It was a goofy day, but NASCAR and ISC are going to have to work on the track before the big day to ensure possible holes and cracks don't turn into the mess we had Sunday. Changing the start time wont change this reality.

I hated how the commentators kept comparing red flags to the Super Bowl Halftime. Halftime is a planned break during the Super Bowl; this is the equivalent of the game being haulted in the third quarter because a goal post fell down.

THAT was them spinning...because it isnt like a broadcast partner to rip the sport for ineptitude....not at least if you want to keep that property...
