No more MicroTrend anti virus sucks-what to replace it with?

my computer came with Micro Trend antivirus software and a one year free update.

Well guess what? After the one year of free updates, the anti virus software timed it self out. :down:

in other words, you have to pay a yearly fee, not merely to get updates, but to keep it operating at all!!!!!!! :mad:

So I am looking for the best possible replacement, one that will work with Windows 7.

First requirement, the software must be permanent.

But it does need to be "updatable"

primary fear and only real source of concern is the internent

suggestions/comments??????

(not sure at all if I want Norton back, as on an older computer, Norton let a virus get into the D-drive (back up) which then crashed the system, requiring a complete reboot, and then reinstalling all my old software....so...as it would not clean the d-drive.)

'Avira AntiVir Personal' is the one I use, it detect more viruses than some other retail softwares (proof (http://www.virus.gr/portal/en/content/2009-08%2C-10-august-05-september)). The only problem is the free version have a nag screen that ask you to buy the retail version, there is a legal way to permanently disable it if you search the web on "disable Avira nag screen".

Others goods ones for free are 'avast! Home Edition' and 'AVG Free'. There is also 'BitDefender Free', but I've never used it before. AVG seem to be the most popular, but to me is the slowest. Avira use very little resources. In fact, you can get them all here: http://filehippo.com/software/antivirus/

God forbid don't use Norton. My brother computer granted by his company came with Norton and I did a scan with Avira it found a virus, with Norton running doing nothing. (Although you can't install the free version for corporate use).

It is by far the best anti-virus software I've used.

As with all reputable anti-virus programs, there is a yearly subscription cost to access the updates for the virus and spyware definitions, but I find it well worth it.
However, I thought that if you don't update, the software will continue to work.

As tmx mentions, avoid Norton... it's a dog :down:

Apparently Norton is actually much better these days and not the resource hog it used to be.

when it was active it seemed to do all right as far as I could tell, but when it abruptly went no longer functional and wanted more money, it made me realize I was renting it, not buying it, soooooooooooooooooo

After investigating further, I find that Norton works the same way. You get a one year "use" and when it is up, it also goes non-functional according to a review i saw recently.

I will check this out--the wesite says free, how can anything from MS be free and worth anythin?
