A traditional F1 sponsor in the past, Brawn sign sponsorship deal for 'Canon' logos to appear on the sidepods of their cars at the Singapore GP.

No confirmation yet if the deal is to extend beyond for this season or indeed into next - Still, good news that big corporations are still seemingly seeing the value in F1 sponsorship:

Canon to sponsor Brawn in Singapore
17/09/2009

Brawn GP has announced a partnership with Canon Singapore Pte Ltd for the Singapore Grand Prix, which will be held under the floodlights of the Marina Bay Street Circuit on Sunday 27 September.

The showcase event, which hosted Formula One's first night race in 2008, will see the iconic Canon branding on the sidepods of Jenson Button and Rubens Barrichello's cars throughout the weekend.

Canon has a relationship with Formula One that dates from 1985. The partnership with Brawn GP will allow Canon Singapore, the company's South and South-East Asia headquarters, to use the unique setting of the only night race on the calendar to promote Canon's expertise in digital imaging to a local and global audience.

"We are very pleased to confirm our partnership with Canon Singapore for the Singapore Grand Prix and look forward to working closely together over the next two weeks," said Ross Brawn. "Formula One's inaugural night race at the Marina Bay Street Circuit was a huge success and the floodlights provided a wonderful spectacle against the backdrop of the Singapore skyline, a perfect combination for Canon to showcase their photographic and digital imaging technology. We're all looking forward to returning to Singapore next week for what should be another fantastic event."

"The Singapore Grand Prix is one of the most visually distinctive races in the world," added Melvyn Ho, Vice President, Consumer Imaging and Information Group, Canon Singapore, "and, as the leader in digital imaging, the race weekend is the perfect showcase for Canon. We are extremely proud to be working with the current World Championship leaders Brawn GP and respect the skill, vision and engineering excellence that have made Ross Brawn and his team so successful this season. Like Brawn GP, Canon brings innovation to the marketplace and as leaders in our respective fields, we look forward to a fruitful and rewarding relationship together."

Previously, Brawn GP announced a one-race partnership with Brazilian brewing company Cervejaria Petropolis for the Brazilian Grand Prix to be held on 18 October.

Just a one off for Singapore. Brawn has already hinted that he has a major sponsorship deal in place for 2010.

Like old times! Now we just need to paint the cars blue and yellow. Put sonic the hedgehog on the side and we are sorted.

Not so sure about that, maybe ask Nico to grow a tash? ;)

Didn't the yellow come from Camel cigarettes rather than Canon?

It's still the classic Williams livery. If you had to pick one Williams livery it'd be that one.

There is nothing Camel about this livery... the yellow is a Renault thing. ;)

Even when they were powered by Honda, and then Judd?? ;)

Well, when there was "Camel" on the car, surely that had something to do with it, but I think regardless, Renault always loves to throw some yellow on the car, no matter how weird it looks, right? (I'm thinking the MildSeven teal/yellow and ING orange/yellow combos, which seemed a bit... busy!) :D

Here is the 1984 (the last pre-Canon) Williams. Yep looks like the yellow was ICI's "fault", and when Camel came along it was nice and convenient to keep it.

So we need a nice "yellow" sponsor to return with Canon :)

Notice how similar the cars lines are to the Red Bull 05?

The nose, aspects of the airbox and the aerofoil.

Speaking of Williams liveries, I think the 1983 Air Saudia one is the best.

Ok, so just throw a spanner in the works re: the yellow engine cover;

I can't find a better picture but I think we can all agree thats a FW14 and that ain't yellow.

IIRC this was Brazil '91.

I assume Camel increased their sponsorship, because that airbox became yellow and had the Camel logo on it a race or so later.

Only those ears above the front suspension are similar.
Both cars have 4 wheels and engine and a driver, front and rear wings, that's about it as far as similarities go.

It was also the last Williams that WASN'T designed by Adrian Newey (well until 1998 anyway!), so I'd be surprised to see any Newey lineage in there at all.

Regarding the white airbox, from what I remember, this only appeared at Phoenix 1991 and Interlagos 1991, and maybe Imola. I have no idea why but I'm guessing Arrows is probably right, with ICI gone at the end of 1990, and Camel only supplying a small amount of funds (as they did for the likes of Larrousse in the late 80s), so the airbox went white in deference to Canon, then they must have changed their deal with Camel to get the airbox looking yellow again, just as it bloody well should :D

Well spotted. :)

It's just our new expert forum member who thinks that mentioning the word nose, airbox and airfoil make it right. ;)

Had Flavio done any design copying, of course, it would be deemed entirely acceptable and the other teams would be called 'weak' for having not done likewise.

Saint Devote mentioned the 1990 Williams airbox being similar to the Red Bull - and while it isn't, it is similar in general principle in that the air inlet sticks out forward of the bodywork, but that is not unique to the RB, all cars are like that now. This trend reappared with Williams and Jordan in 1997 and soon became universal, presumably because it gave more and/or cleaner airflow into the engine. Maybe Williams had the right idea back in 1990 but since the car was poor by Williams standard (presumably for other reasons), combined with the fact that it was (and still is!) uglier than the simpler holes that were on virtually all other early 90s cars, they gave up on the idea?

Jordan 196 (simpler airbox arrangement, common before then): http://b.f1-facts.com/ul/a/541

Jordan 197 (similar to 1990 Williams): http://b.f1-facts.com/ul/a/5214

Interesting analysis of the airbox shapes back in the 90's.
Now you reminded me how beautiful those 90's F1 cars were. :)
