The whole bloody -gate suffix thing. We've had Spygate, liegate and now crashgate and it all sounds crap and is based purely on some hotel. I tried finding the Mitchell and Webb clip about Watergategate (and failed) but their point is spot on, why take part of the name of a hotel and then use it to suffix all other scandals?

So called crashgate could actually be referred to as Singapore and everyone would know what it was about. And the fact that journalists do the same thing is proof that the whole media industry is going down the pan as the writers get lazier and lazier.

I was thinking exactly the same thing this morning as I read about 'Crashgate'. Even an updated version would be preferable - why a 35-year-old scandal should provide the basis for the suffix is beyond me.

It is a fecking disgrace.

Can't the media hacks in general go back to using scandal, fiasco, etc without adding '-gate' at the end?

No doubt some hack is already penning a piece about this thread: "rallyforum.com in Gategate scandal"

It seems some journalists never realised that the Watergate scandal wasn't about water! :\ :p :

Using "-gate" as a suffix may have been witty the first time, but 35 years and many "***-gate" scandals later it is just hideous.

NO I think we should have BenGate over the lockerbie scandal

"What, so because the original scandal happened in a hotel with -gate on the end, you apply the suffix -gate to every subsequent scandal? That can't be the system"

Indeed Mr Yeo, I can't find that Mitchell & Webb sketch on a well-known video-sharing website that may soon be sponsoring an F1 team... and now I can't get the idea out of my head that the F1 scoring system should mirror that of Numberwang... ;)

It's dissapointing that the world has become so lazy that the word gate is added to the name of every scandal without a moments thought.

Can't people come up with original names for things any more?

I hope you're not working for Audi, since the sales manager of Audi in Finland had to resign recently after basically saying in a magazine interview that women are not fit to be leaders and exist mainly for pleasing men and to iron their shirts.

No, although Audi were actually testing here too.

Esko Kiesi... doesn't sound very German to me, is he Finnish by any chance?

Yes, he's Finnish. Should we call this Audigate or maybe Kiesicaust or Kiesicide?
