I DONT want to strat the "should NASCAR use rain tires" with this question, but I do want to know the answer.....

Are the rain tires still an "available option" for the NW series? IE, if it rains, will the race run as per last year with a red flag period to change tires and add wipers? Or, will they (for example) postpone the race till later in the day/Monday?

There should be information later this week when the Goodyear Tire Notes are published.

I'm reasonably sure they will have rain tires, if needed. They had the tires at Watkins Glen but didn't use them. It's a tight schedule with GrandAm and Nascar Canada, so I'm sure it was planed with the expectation of rain tires.

Not only did they have rain tires at Watkins Glen, they had NEW rain tires.

This is what the old tires look like.

Rain in Montreal? The current [as of Thursday afternoon] forecast for Montreal shows a 70% chance for rain on Saturday and 30% on Sunday. NASCAR will again have rain tires on hand so they can get the race in as scheduled.(8-26-2009)

Robby Gordon isn't racing. Bummer.

I'm surprised he's not going to be there. I wonder if this is some sort of unannounced "double secret probation" from last year?

call_me_andrew
28th August 2009, 03:16
I'm not sure Goodyear and NASCAR can tolerate rain on both days. At Watkins Glen, they brought 600 rain tires and 1,500 slicks just for the Nationwide race (the Sprint Cup race had 2,000 slicks). 600 tires is enough to give every team 3 sets for the whole weekend, but that's it.

Nah. That's old news. He's racing in two places next weekend so I'm sure he just didn't have the time or inclination to do it all.

I suspect a few drivers who are racing there on Sunday are glad too. :D

For the record - NASCAR screwed Robby in Montreal. He was clearly in the lead when the yellow flag was shown. Marcos passed him under caution and NASCAR should've put Marcos back where he belonged. Robby knows NASCAR's rule book more thoroughly than they do and they don't seem to like having him tweak their noses when they're wrong.

Sparky, they may have gotten the call wrong on Robby, but they have ignored most of his stupidity of late so I figure the karma of Robby Gordon is back in some sort of equality with NASCAR.

I hope for no rain, but if it does, watch Ron Fellows go for 2, because he has the experience most of these guys don't have, includingBoris.

Robby filed an affidavit in support of NASCAR's position in the court case vs Mayfield. He, Jeff and Jimmie stated that they did not want to compete with somebody known to have tested positive for a banned substance. I figure that got him some brownie points with NASCAR. They hosed him by parking him at Pocono but gave him a lot of latitude at The Glen.

Wet qualifying was an unexpected treat. And the tires passed that test with flying colors.

and now they have two sets for the race. Hopefully it will be either wet or dry, if the track is both in places those tires won't last very long.

I don't think Ron or Boris is going to matter... not with Ambrose racing!

Jaques Villinue just made some great moves...

Spin six times and still restart? Some guys have no idea what they're doing on wets.
Just throw the checker and go home before the series becomes the laughing stock of all racing.

Good to see Edwards get it on the last corner. The number of yellows in the wet though makes me wonder how useful these rain tires are. Yes they were able to finish the race, which I suppose is better than red-flagging or stopping it, but maybe there needs to be a training program for the drivers to practice in wet conditions. Some of the moves out there were idiotic just a total lack of situational awareness or just a complete lack of respect for other drivers.

Enough for rain tires in nascar, that was terrbile racing.

Feel sorry for ambrose, without a doubt he was the class of the field today.

The rain tires worked just fine. Qualifying proved that. The only problem with that race was dirty drivers with more greed than common sense.

Same drivers as always, except for some what used to be ringers, but no more. Geez, a driver like carl winning against all those road racers. :)

I left the race with about 20 laps to go when the rain started. I never thought they would finish the race.
We had great seats, last row of our section but OMG was it ever windy.
Watching the race at times was frustating with all the caution laps.
I was highly impressed with Andrew Ranger.

I didn't think there was really dirty driving as much as unrealistic expectations as to how many cars can fit through a turn in wet conditions.

The main issue I see isn't rain tires, it is brain dead aggressive drivers. That....and this track is like Martinsville on roids...tight and too easy to overdrive.

The rain tires would NOT be the hassle EXCEPT NASCAR wont just let the guys come in as it starts to rain and put them on, they red flagged the show and made a big production and restart out of it. A joke....

Yes, and how many Nationwide races don't end with a plethora of crashes these days?

Marcos Ambrose at Montreal has now become the racing equivalent of Charlie Brown and the football.

Andrew, he did it to himself on that one. He had Carl beat if he just concentrated on driving the race car out the front window as opposed to the back. Too busy being defensive and trying to hold Carl off when he had the sheer speed if he just ignored Carl.

One thing is for sure, it ensures Marcos is back next year....which is a GREAT thing because we love him in Canada...if a Canadian cant win, we never mind seeing an Aussie do well.

you live by the curb, you die by the curb, Marcos has no one to blame but himself.

did anyone know what happened to J.R. Fitspatrick, he was 7th before the rain?

also with Justin taking out Fellows, it happens, he wheelhopped into the corner and had no control, Ron was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

it was pretty funny how Marcos was all on the radio about RAnger being aggressive, but there were no marks on his car, while everyone else looked like they were at Martinsville

Yep.

I think it would help if they went back to single file restarts on a wet track. It might help to cut down on the bunching up in the first few corners.

Ranger is quite good.
I do think JV was very conservative as he really needed to "finish" a race in a good position.
