Hello!
Whats the best cheap to run/own trackday car for the beginner?
My only thoughts are either German or Japanese because of reliability and build quality...

With no details on what you're seeking to do on this track day (oval, autocross, circuit racing or drag racing), it's hard to give an opinion. What country you live in also would affect the cars available.
Anyway, assuming you live in the U.S. and you're talking about autocross or road/circuit racing, I'm a big fan of the 1st gen RX7 because of the weight, affordability at purchase and in modifying them... and they're well made. Plus there are so many of them, you'll always have similar cars in your class to race against. But you'll have to get in tune with rotary enigines.
My 2 cents.

As one who raced ---- There ain't no such critter!
In racing the best way to make a small fortune is to start with a big one!
But the more work you can do yourself the better and slightly cheaper it is.
Any of the 'stock' one make series are probably the cheapest but there bodywork can add up.
Scounging fenders or doors from street wrecks can help. :vader:

Miata is a great car for track days. But most places whould require the hard-top.
