View Full Version : [IRC] Rallye San Remo 2009

I just had a look at website of this year's Rallye San Remo. It looks like organisers want to make a rallysprint out of this race. They will have only 9 special stages with a total of only 201,79 Kms. :(
This must be one of the shortest editions ever of Rallye San Remo. :D

I think that it's because of Italian agreement about making CIR rallys shorter this year...

Yes, that might be true, but it still seems a short rally San Remo to me. :(

I'm not sure but I think they didn't drove many more km's and stage when it started on thursday...??
Then they drove on thursday evening (4), friday morning and saturday untill noon? I think this year it will be more "compact" then?
But still not interseting to go & see is my opinion...

Last year they did drive more stage's and more kms. Only the long stage last year was allready 65 Kms instead of the 45 of this year, but also the other stages were more and longer. :D It is too little number of stages to go and watch, i will follow it from behind my PC. :D

I'm planning to attend this event but I'm struggling to find any proper spectator info. I'm on a course with work in Marseille so I was going to hire a car and drive up and watch this on the weekend.
All I need is a map of the stages and times and any advice on where the good spots are.
Cheers Jamie

Jamie, take a look at official website, under competitors. There you can find a timing and also maps of the special stages. You have to consider tough that there will be only 9 SS, wich is really very little, don't you agree? But if you are in Marseille, it is not so far ofcourse. :)

wwbroe, thanks for that. I realise the event is a bit short but as you say it's not that far from me. That's the reason I'm going and to watch Meeke. Hopefully it will go down to the wire and Rally Scotland should be something else.

I am sure Vouilloz/Loix/Meeke are not that busy that they can't do their own testing... Hopefully we will see Sarrazin too, I guess Peugeot Sport want to make an extra effort for the "big ones" - Monte and Sanremo.

Kopecky and Hanninen are both definitely at Sanremo.
Abarth should be out in force, but maybe they will send Basso to the ERC event instead as his IRC title hopes are over? Maybe they can bring in Travaglia, who is without a drive for Sanremo (no money)
Peugeot should have a very strong contendor in the form of Andreucci!
Maybe Toni Gardemeister will again drive the Corsa? He said they were negotiating for more events after Asturias.

No, last year Travaglia had a chance for the ERC title, but Fiat didn't send him to Antibes. Due to that, he was not classified in the final standings. Fiat didn't support Travaglia last year, so there is no reason why they will do it this year.

Did Toni G pay for his drive in Spain or selected by MSD? Would be good to see him out in it again now that he has some experience of the car.
No BB in the second Proton?
Don't know about Toni, but my impression is that the Corsa drive is subsidised by Hankook/MSD. In Ypres and Barum they carried the sponsor's logos of Bengue and Mikkelssen. Toni said he is in negotiations for further drives in the Corsa.

He said that he is positively surprised by the amelioration in engine and gearbox, this compared to Punto's he drove before in Portugal and also in Condrozrally.
He tested different setup's and also got familiar with the range of BF Goodrich tyres. Let's see what he can do during the rally. ;)

If you read again his words when he go away from Skoda, he said that he was taking risks for nothing. And he says it was unbeliveble to do this without beeing paid.

The President of Automobile Club Sanremo, Sergio Maiga, yesterday Thursday
September 24th, officially announced the will of the Organizing Committee of Rallye
Sanremo, to go back in 2010, to the format that made the history of this event, returning on
the roads of Tuscany.
Sergio Maiga: “Our idea received a favorable reception from manufacturers and now we
are in contact with the Italian Automobile Sporting Commission (CSAI) in order to obtain
the authorization to propose crews a mixed event, that will provide a first leg on gravel in
the heart of Tuscany and a second part on the legendary roads of the Ligurian hinterland”.
This format, that once regrouped Liguria, Tuscany and Umbria, has been abandoned in
1992 (first and only victory in the World Rally Championship of Andrea Aghini – Lancia
Delta HF Integrale) to change it to an all asphalt event.
The first reaction from press, drivers and local representatives who attended the
announcement, has been very favorable

What they said at the Shakedown
Juho Hanninen (Skoda Fabia S2000): “I improved a lot on asphalt since the beginning of the
season, but each race is different and here with such narrow and twisty roads, is going to a
new experience. After Montecarlo I understood that the Fabia had a great pontential and I
could improve! Jan (Kopeky) has good chsnces to win the challenge, and I’ll do my best to help
him”.
François Duval (Abarth Grande Punto S2000): “I do not know this rally very well, but above all I
should start slowly to avoid what happened in Ypres! Apart this I’m very happy with the car…”
Luca Rossetti (Abarth Grande Punto S2000): “The route is really nice and I like it a lot. I feel
comfortable in the Punto and we found a good set up”.
Kris Meeke (Peugeot 207 S2000): “I feel good, the 207 is fine. I’m surprised with my times, that
are not bad at all compared to the ones of other drivers with better experience on this kind of
route”.
Piero Longhi (Skoda Fabia S2000): “I’m satisfied. Last Tuesday we did some tests that allowed
us to improve the Fabia. I really like Rallye Sanremo, but is going to be tough because of the
high level of the participants”.
Nicolas Vouilloz (Peugeot 207 S2000): “The set up is perfect and I feel comfortable. I always
liked these roads . We’ll see where we’ll be tonight, the first leg is going to be crucial”.
Luca Cantamessa (Peugeot 207 S2000) BF Goodrich): “We are working on the set up of the 207
in order to adapt it to my driving style. I can’t wait to see what happens at the end of the first
stage!”
Umberto Scandola (Abarth Grande Punto S2000): “We worked a lot this morning to find the
right set up. We’ll see what happens in the first stage”.

Yes, it's not a good time from Duval on the first stage.
Maybe he has problems or made a small mistake or something, i don't know.
Somebody who has alreade stage times from the second stage ?

So, now we have to wait about two hours before the long stage of this night. Andreucci is doing great, despite being on Pirelli's. As expected Rosetti is also showing great pace. Kronos boys are now in group in third, fourth and fifth. Meeke is almost the new champion in IRC. ;)

Kopecký went slightly off after a jump and cut a screw of a lower suspension arm. Change of the screw is possible, the car should be able to leave the accident scene on its own.

Have to say that to date Duvals participation in the IRC hasnt harmed the standing of any of the front runners ;-)

Ten minutes before the start of the longest stage of the rally, 44 kms nightstage Cuori. Let's see what difference it will make. Hopefully no off's, because it is risky to be cancelled after some car blokking the road. Anybody else still awake to follow this last stage of the day? :D

It looks like startingorder for long stage will be by overall standings. Luca Cantamessa left service three minutes late and will have a penalty for that. They changed exhaust.
