Bascially... Gronholm in Fiesta Rally cross car to promote new Fiesta in US, run by Olsbergs Motor Sport

I think the record gonna fly all the way with Gronholm behind the steering whell.
From the pressrelaese from Team Olsbergs MSE , Sweden:
"
The two-Fiesta cars Olsberg Motor Sport Evolution set up with will be driven by rallycross star Andreas Eriksson and rally-legend Marcus Grönholm in the "Unlimited" class at the 19.3 kilometers long asphalt and gravel track with 156 curves.
Team rallycross-Fiesta is based on the entirely new Fiestan. The cars are four-wheel drive and is equipped with a Ford 2.0-liter Duratec engine of over 800 horsepower.
Rallycross-Fiestans suspension has been developed through a collaboration between Olsberg Motor Sport Evolution, Ohlin and Ford Europe's Team RS engineers, responsible for Ford's WRC car.
- "We worked day and night all winter to get Fiestan ready in time for the European championships and it was nice that it got a well deserved victory in Portugal in early May," said Eriksson. "We think it's exciting to take the car to the Pike's Peak and see what it can perform in such a unique race. This is a legendary event and we have already been and looked at the challenges we will face. I am convinced that Fiestan will belong to the top of the battle to beat the 10-minute record and that the car will make a good racing debut in the U.S.. "

No Rallycross cars, but a three-door (for Eriksson) and a five-door (for Grönholm) prototype built especially for the PPIHC. BTW, the new Fiesta Mk7 will not be on sale in the US before 2010.

yeah cars are 600bhp modified fiesta,s but basic model can be used for outings in Rally America championship later in year, i believe that is plan, also team what to break record which stands at 10mins 01 sec and do it in nine minutes!!!!!!!!!!! hmmmmmmmmm tall order , but lets hope so :)

28th May 2009, 13:27
Nine minutes are possibly somewhat confusing… The 9 should just stay in front of the new course record time they are focussing, therefore 9:59:999mins would be enough – if "Monster" Tajima (current record holder), British RX veteran Mark Rennison (Ford RS200 'Mach2') or any of those guys in a PPIHC 'Open Wheeler' are not faster.
I understood that both Fiesta engines should produce about 800bhp at the start (2862m) and still about 500bhp at the Finish/Summit (4301m). In that case they must have at least between 900 and 1000bhp at sea level…

If the Fiesta is any good, Bosse should break the record easily...
However the Suzuki is highly developed for this race so who knows...

Course record can only be broken, by whoever, if weather and track is perfect.

Yep, only one run, that’s right! And practice is split up into 3 parts of the track in 3 days. Rain, hailstorm, snow, all can happen up there, even in July.

Great event though. Are they still talking about paving the rest of the course Kevin?

It's written an article on erc24.com(paysite) And there it says that these 2 cars are built alongside the rallycross car of Eriksson, with the same bodyshell, similar basic structure, but with different suspension, transmission and most off all the engine.. The Pikes Peak Fiesta will also have some larger aerofoils then the RX car..

Yeah, the weather last year was crazy.
There were teams leaving the start line with 9 PSI in the tires and crossing the finish at 45+ PSI. The weather temperatures were just unreal, there was no way there was going to be a record run. That and the area from just past Devil's Playground through Boulder Park had been graded and they had put in all of the re-bar for the curbing based on a 2 lane road, cutting 30-40% of the width in some parts.
They are definitely still talking about more paving, there was some question as to how much they would do this year with the cost and availability of the high altitude polymer asphalt but it seems as though some more will be paved...

I'm an editor of ERC24, but mainly working for the RX history part of the webside. All our info was given by Andréas E. himself to my friend/counterpart Tim W. of ERC24. With a modified RX car one don't need to go to the PPIHC for braking the course record these days. See the current 'Open Category' record, done in 2000 by Per Eklund with a Saab 9-3 Viggen that was pretty much further developed than his Saab 9-3 ERC of the same year. Nearly one and a half minutes slower than that current 'Unlimited Category' record done by "Monster" Tajima in 2007… To brake the 10 mins barrier one needs to have a prototype thing built for nothing else but Pikes Peak.

Wonder if "Monster" Tajima will not take part this year and if Grönholm and Eriksson will take passengers up to the Summit…
Supposedly Monster filed his entry paperwork last week (June 2).
I don't know about the co-drivers.
Maybe they want the option to run them, utilize them for practice and see how the times and driver comfort level is? I know JEMBA has the virtual co-driver set up available for PPIHC (Stig used it a couple of years ago if memory serves).
Pikes Peak isn't a terribly taxing route to learn now that they have added some guard rails but without a lot of pseudo practice it very well could be that both drivers feel that with a co-driver they can run better lines as they won't have to remember the course in as much detail...

As one can see in the entry list there is a columne with space for the name of a co-driver. However, AFAIK Michèle Mouton (Audi Sport quattro) in 1984 was the last to take a navigator (Fabrizia Pons) with her in the "Unlimited Class" (by then still called "Open Rally Class"). And in 1985 Mouton (Audi Sport quattro S1 by then) went alone up to the summit.

Whatever they do for testing over here in Europe is IMO not really suitable for the very event in question.
Or is it possible to rent the Pikes Peak Highway for pre-race testing?

The mountain is for rent year around.
Teams frequently rent it in groups for 3-5 hours in the mornings.
There was a test session June 27th in fact...
The fact that Marcus was allegedly asking other teams for set up tips, they were running massively wrong tires, and have less than 500 foot pounds of torque is almost unforgivable...

To me it seemed that there was a lack of respect from the Europeans pre-event.

Example Mark Rennison - "Rennison is confident that he and the RS200 can be the first pairing to finish the 12-mile 156-turn course in les than 10 minutes: “If everything on the day goes right and the weather conditions are good beating the 10-minute barrier shouldn’t be a problem".
It came as no surprise that in the end they didn't get close, nor that they were ill prepared (no set up, wrong tyres, wrong engine configuration etc).
Teams and individuals get more respect from keeping their intentions quiet, getting the job done, and THEN talking it up.....

Well, I find myself sitting here with a slight smug look on my face after seeing the results.

Agreed. On the positive side, they'll all have to come back next year and get their act together. It's a great event, and hopefully more teams come to do this event justice.

Absolutely agree Cannyboy. It's the Holy Grail of Hillclimbing. Having been once in '05 and had a great time, would love to revisit.
To us, the cars that stood out the most were the open wheelers. From the outside they just don't look as if they are anywhere near the right vehicle for the event (bet Gronholm etc thought the same), but they get the job done, and look and sound great doing it.
The other thing we couldn't get our heads around were the tyres. For all intents and purposes an outsider would swear you had to be running proper rally tyres after looking at the hill. But luckily we followed local advice and ran BFG's as per Rhys & Rod Millens advice.
As you say, hopefully it will have only made them hungrier to come back and do it right next time.

In an interview on Speed Channel's "Wind Tunnel", Markus gives his own account of Pike's Peak, and is looking forward to coming back. :)

Without going to Colorado in due time for pre-testing they will never go any far.
There is NOTHING over here in Europe where you can get enough experience to race at such an altitude and of all those problems coming with it.

I think that is the main point. You can't just turn up and expect to go quick, etc It has to be a proper programme.
No offence, but 'Monster' isn't a great driver, if Marcus (in fact, any of the WRC boys) could get plenty of practice, I'm sure he could challenge the quickest time.

Some of the best drivers in the world haven't been able to piece together Pikes Peak.
It is much an instinct, as being able to read the mountain.
At 13,300 feet it was dry and breezy, at the start line it was drizzling, and at the 5 mile mark it was pouring rain.
You need to develop an understanding of the mountain as much as have the car set up right.... If you know how the mountain changes when things do change, you can be much much faster, that is where Monster has the advantage...
yeah, Monster is a guru! :) You can see it in the way he sets up his car for every turn, and just throws it into next corner...
Grönholm looked like an amateur..

Not to see on vid: Grönholm’s right rear brake on fire, which set the tyre alight just before the summit.

:D and a little ironi.. ;)
I've seen the videos and Monster is not that bad if we compare his lines on gravel to Bosse's ones. He only appears a little bit slow in the tarmac corners ... I didn't know there were so many parts in tarmac, that's a pity :| they should have leaved everything in gravel IMHO !
Monster crushed everybody anyway, so the talk stops, the winner is always right.

Climb Dance is kind of be all, end all of Pikes Peak videos (or rally videos for the matter) so in that perspective I think that Peak Performance is justified. It also does it openly, not trying to hide the fact which is obvious.
Does anyone who is behind the video? Did they think Grönholm's entry was such an event that it should be filmed in a manner that Vatanen's performance was 20+ years ago?

The 2009 PPIHC entry was part of Ford’s PR programme to introduce the Fiesta Mk7 in the USA in 2010, thought out by Jost Capito. Therefore, I guess that Ford is also behind the video, to show the Americans moving pics of a tiny but very sportive car. However, just in case Grönholm had won and was able to do a time under the magic 10 minutes mark, as somewhat blue-eyedly bragged before even leaving Europe, it would have been a much bigger event than Vatanen beating Röhrl’s 1987 time by just half a second in 1988…
