Are we sure that the next WRC Impreza is going to be a hatchback? I thought so for sure, but then I read that Subaru are going to keep the Impreza sedan as well as add a 5-door hatch. I'm hoping for a hatch, as it would probably be better, but who knows?

Only slightly different but here are the official images. The full story is available on ukcarnews.com

Subaru's new model blitz for Frankfurt

Subaru has chosen September’s 62nd Frankfurt International Motor Show (IAA) for the biggest new model blitz in its history.

Key attractions include the European debut for the completely new Impreza, a striking World Rally Car Concept, facelifted Tribeca luxury SUV, totally new Justy supermini and the world’s first horizontally-opposed ‘boxer’ turbo-diesel engine – due to be progressively installed in various models from spring 2008.

Subaru WRC driver, Petter Solberg, will address the Subaru press conference (Tuesday, September 11, Hall 8 at 2 pm) when the new Impreza-based WRC Concept will be unveiled.

Described as an indication of future styling trends for a world rally car, the WRC Concept is sure to draw the crowds – and conjure up speculation among enthusiasts and the press alike.

Also presenting at the press conference is Mr Matsatsugu Nagato, Fuji Heavy Industries’ Executive Vice President in charge of European markets.

Better appearance is important for Subaru to sell more cars, but the competitiveness is the most important aspect for WRCar. I can take some ugly Impreza as long as it is competitive against Ford & Citroen.

Having stuck my head under the bonnet of the Rally NZ Zero cars, I can say that the engineering is truely different from the previous model. As a vehicle, the drivers were impressed with it's on & off road capability.

They had only three weeks to prepare the cars and it was a rush & a bit of a battle. Electronics were a headache due to major changes in the loom & setup. With all said & done, they performed well.

Thats good news!

Subaru are challenging the market in Japan, they are loosing out to other manufacturers, however through motorsport they have a dominance in news and motorsport exposure. WRC = Petter is HUGE in Japan as is Atkinson and SWRT. People after the JGTC (Japan Grand Touring Car Championship) recognise SWRT and Petter before almost all other motorsports.

Subaru needs to keep up a WRC program in order to not fade into the back seats of the Japan automobile industry. The more exposure they get the better it is for them! Also keeping Petter is a key component for popularity in Japan. Blonde, according to Japanese women (Petter's a heart throb), and a personality which would make anyone like WRC, a win win situaiton. Now all they need is the results to really boast!

Speaking of control, I was told by someone with intimate knowledge of the 2008
WRCar project that the new model has more front overhang (distance from front of car to front axle line), which will present an even bigger challenge to turning the wrc car into a consistently good handling machine.
He also believed that due to a delay in achieving homologation numbers, the WRCar will be based on homologation of the normally-engined Impreza, not the WRX Sti. Most noticeable result of this is that the new WRCar will not have a WRX bonnet scoop, which has always been blocked off in the WRCars, anyway.

The overhang at the front of the 2008 Subaru Impreza was a noted problem area from the guys who prepared & drove them as Zero cars at Rally NZ.

Daniel
12th September 2007, 15:08
It was also a problem for the 307 when compared to it's little brother the 206. Wheels at the corners has always been the right way unless it's a GT car which needs big overhangs for downforce. Silly that they've got a smaller rear overhang where you can get away with a big one and they've got a bigger front overhang when that's not a good thing :mark:

AndyRAC
12th September 2007, 16:34
Maybe I'm being naive, but surely when the new Impreza was being designed they would have asked Prodrive what they wanted, knowing it will be used as the basis of the WRCar, or haven't they heard of communication? Or don't they give two hoots, so if they design a dogs dinner, that's just tough luck, Prodrive will have to make the best of it. Which funnily enough is what seems to be happening.

The best part of that youtube video is where bossman mentions "We are always changing to a better car so this one will be better." Petter must have been flipping internally while hearing that.

I've never really been much a fan of *any* of that 2k+ Imprezas, but if I had to pick one, the 03 WRC is probably the winner...

I'm not too optimistic about Subaru's WRC committment. I believe this car is very important not only for Subaru but for the entire WRC because I think the performance of this car will decide whether Subaru will be there in 2010. If you look at the contract situation, Petter, Atko, & Pons are contracted til 2009 (Pons has option for 2009, not sealed contract), which will be the 2nd yr of this car. So in other words, Subaru has no committment beyond 2009 while it is very fair to expect some results by the end of 2nd season of the new car. I won't say Subaru has to win the title but at least 2 or 3 rallies in 2009, and if they fail to do so, Subaru may exit WRC. Then it won't be good news for the entire WRC, either. Not just we'll have less manufacturers but the remaining manufacturers may start to lose their interest in the sport. Remember, the manufacturers are looking forward to beat other companies, not wining the sole make championship.

Anyways the appearance of the car is questionable, but I hope it will turn out to be at least decently competitive.

If Subaru leaves I'm sure another manufacturer will see it as an opportunity. After all Lancia left and Subaru filled the gap they left :)

Of course they can, just requires a lot of hard work.

Is it known if Subaru will start 2008 season in Monte-Carlo with the new car or they will debut it later in the season?

they will debut later in 2008, they can't make another mistake and give impreza 2008 out as soon as possible.

Exactly my concern. The engine in the 08 WRX is approximately 3" (8 cm) further forward relative to the front wheel centers.

Distance from wheel centers to front of crank pulley:
- 02 WRX (US) 19" (48.3 cm)
- 08 WRX (US) 22" (55.9 cm)

I am sure Prodrive is not happy about this. I wonder if other considerations, such as pedestrian safety, prevailed.

Yes, the lower mounting helps. Re checking my measurements, the position difference may be less than the 3" I stated. Probably closer to 1.5-2". Still significant. When I can do careful measurements on an 08 I will post more accurate results.

By the way, when Subaru says the 08 Impreza is shorter overall than the old, that is relative to the 07. The 02 Impreza was not only shorter overall than the 08, but also had less front overhang.

Looks like a Mazda 3 series, 5 door. Not great, but not real bad either.

Here are the official pictures of the sti - I think the change was needed but i'm still not convinced about the styling - original Impreza shape was iconic where as this is very Generic.

It's not ugly, but indeed this shape is very unrecognizable for an Impreza. Shame the designers had no sence of that.

Barattero (Subaru representative with Prodrive, Makinen, Arai and someone else, only STI partners) have been testing a new Subaru for group N (specially developing gravel group N suspension) with a new Imprezza (a prototipe sent by STI, with "normal" and not STI body shape).

Drivers (Sanchez, Yoma and Raies) have done the usual optimistic for the media comments, but in more informal way they just speak about "good for a beggining, not faster than the previous one, at least for the moment"
