Found this on the Indycar website - a near full recount of Pole Day in 1996 and all of the dramatic twists that went along with it. Hearing Tom Carnegie shout "And he did it! It's a new track record!" as Tony Stewart puts it on the pole still gives me chills. And of course Luyendyk and Brayton making late runs in the day puts this Pole Day near the top for me in terms of speed and excitement.

Love the sound of those 900hp turbos.

Also, kudos to IndyCar.com for digging this up. Excellent.

Even better is the 1984 & 1995 Long Beach Grand Prix full race. Now that was when IndyCar was "IndyCar".
