Scotland will stage the final round of the prestigious Intercontinental Rally Challenge (IRC) in 2009 over the weekend of Friday 20th and Saturday 21st November.

This thread is for all the information about it to try and help you guys who are planning to come to the event, it does seem like there are a lot of you :)

The rally will be based between Stirling (about 35 miles / 40 minutes West of Edinburgh) and Perth (30 miles / 35 minutes North-East of Stirling).

According to HaCo the route details will be announced at the end of April. I don't know what stages will be being used but none of the ones around Stirling have been used for many years. I think the ones around Perth are likely to be similar to those used on the Colin McRae Forest Stages but that is only six weeks before so not sure they will have enough time to repair the roads etc so don't know if they will be using any different ones.

But I just also wanted to mention that when you are making plans, you may even consider coming over a week early to watch at the Roger Albert Clark Rally, 13-16 November. For me it's the best UK rally of the year, 3 long days of following historic cars around the country, using some of the best stages and it's just completely awesome, I can't describe how much I enjoy it. Last year Malcolm Wilson won it in a MkII Escort. What a week this is going to be!! :bounce: http://www.rogeralbertclarkrally.org

You can choose between flying in to Glasgow or Edinburgh airport as both are roughly the same distance from Rally HQ but from Perth it's quicker/easier to reach Edinburgh.

Plenty of accommodation nearby too, where you stay depends on how far you want to drive each day. I'd recommend travelodge in quite a few places nearby, Stirling, Falkirk, Perth, Dunfermline, Kinross, and at a push Glenrothes or Dundee. Visit http://www.visitscotland.com for info on accomodation etc.

If anyone knows who is likely to be entering the event or coming to watch that would be interesting too ;) I will put all the info I hear about the event in here.

Really looking forward to November - should be some fantastic Rallying action. Agree about the RAC which is the week before, always a fantastic event - the only 'bad' thing is it doesn't last long enough, I always feel it needs another day.
As for the IRC Scottish - I'm intrigued as to what the route might be - is 6 weeks enough to get the stages used on the McRae Stages back in some sort of shape? Just wish it was another day instead of the 2 days. And hope that all the top boys turn up, plus a few wild cards & the BF Goodrich drive should go to a young Scottish/British driver.
Finally, I hope the prices and spectator areas aren't like on RallyGB......

J4MIE

Not too sure I agree about the RAC being too short, I really noticed on the Monday last year that most of them were really trying to get to the finish more than anything else. I don't blame them at all, it's a lot they've got through up to then and of course they don't want to throw it off with the finish in their sights! Also another day would mean another area of the country and would add a significant cost to doing the event.

There will probably be a shakedown stage on the Thursday and I'm led to believe there may be a test day organised in the run up to the event too. IRC events are tending to be two day events as well which will cut costs no doubt, but still providing good competition and entertainment :)

Must admit, I baulked when I saw that price. Wasn't totally surprised however, IMS are the organisers - their raison d'etre is high ticket prices. I'd be willing to bet that £50 is the most expensive in the IRC, and it's not really on. I'll probably still end up going.........

Would be great for rallys to be still be free, but £50 for 3 days entertainment dosnt seem to bad to me. Especially when it costs me £46 to watch rasenal for 90 minutes!

Is there any more information where the rally HQ will be based, will it be in Perth or in Stirling. I see on the website that they want to use both, but does anybody know where service will be located? No news of possible stages that will be used. I want to plan my trip but i prefer to wait untill we have some more decent information. ;)

You could book your flights now (to Edinburgh I'd say) and then you can arrange accommodation etc after the route is announced (May 13th). I have seen a couple of proposed stage locations but no idea of the route in full yet.

I think that the start will be in Perth, so going by the other link would say three stages repeated in Perth (will probably use Craigvinean as it has quite a lot of milage), then second day in the Trossachs with the finish in front of Stirling Castle on the Saturday.

All this is just guesses though of course ;)

Looks a fairly good route, looking forward to it - but not looking forward to paying the £50 for a pass. Still think that is misguided - compare to last year's McRae Stages and the freedom to choose were to watch.

On most Rallies here in the UK, you can choose to watch were you want (as long as it's not dangerous) However, on RallyGB, you can't - there are spectator areas from were to watch. Rally Scotland looks as though it will be the same.

So, if i see it correctly, there will only be thirteen stages, of wich two of them are superspecial stages. I find that a little disappointing, with only 224.88 of competitive kms. :(
What about the accesses to the stages, will they be limited or will you be able to use any road you want, i mean those that are not used by the rally? Or will it be like in RAC-rally's of the last ten years where you are only supposed to go to restricted area's?
Can somebody give me a decent answer to those questions, then maybe i can start planning my trip over there. ;)

The problem with the stages being used for this rally is that they are mostly in remote, hilly countryside - so there are very few access routes into the stages, which makes it easy for organisers to block 'unofficial' access.

I believe that on some of the stages there will be only one spectator access point. Expect it to be similar to RGB, which means it should be possible to walk deeper into the stage from that point, so long as you are sensible and arrive early (most marshals will not try to stop you walking into the stage if you are 1 hour + before the first car is due).

It was also reported in Mnews last week that you can park your car and actually stay in it to watch a particular stage. Why would you want to do that? There's nothing to compare to the sight, sound and smell of a competition car....

Mark Higgins is planning to do Rally Scotland in the MG. Apparently car will have more development done over the next 2 months.

Kronos may put Meeke in a 207 S2k on the McRae stages as a prelude to Rally Scotland (only at planning stage despite what has been written elsewhere). I presume the rule that forbids testing/reccing on a European championship rally prior to the event doesn't apply in this instance although Meeke will run, if he turns up, as safety car. Meeke has currently entered in the ex Brookes Escort. So things may change.

I can believe there might only be 6 S2000 entries (end of the season and probably no Skoda) but it would be a great shame if it didn't run at all. There is a fair amount of interest in this thread already and a fair few planning to go.

That's actually a very interesting question. Can't speak for everybody else, but I think because people have a lot of goodwill towards the IRC - they're more likely to give it a bit of leeway. Whereras the WRC keeps messing up for whatever reason - 17WRCars on RallyGB.....

Taken from http://www.britishrally.co.uk

The planning for Rally of Scotland is well underway with the Road Books, Rally Guide, Time cards etc. all at the printers ready for the IRC competitors arriving in Stirling on Monday 16th November. This is the first year of a minimum 3 year agreement with Event Scotland, Perth & Kinross and Stirling Councils as well as the IRC promoters, Eurosport Events.

The deadline for entries has been extended by 4 days to accommodate the extra entries that are expected for this new event. This has been a tough year for everyone financially and the last two weekends have seen the conclusion of the British Rally Championship, the Scottish Rally Championship, the Sanremo Rally and entries close for Rally GB. Meaning that people are only now getting round to the UK’s newest International.

Kris Meeke is keen to make this event his celebration on claiming the Championship only 9 days ago in Sanremo. He will be taking on his 3 Kronos Racing team mates, Abarth look like sending a two car entry, Proton are also talking about running a second car, Rene George will have some exciting news with Skoda, plus some other privateer Skodas, Honda are sending 3 cars, Franz Wittmann has already announced his participation and Hankook are wanting to capitalise on their first year in Scotland as a sponsor with a big event. On top of this there are entries from Hungary and France.

At the weekend Mark Higgins stated that he would be back in Perth for Rally of Scotland. The Top 3 Group N winners in the Hankook MSA Scottish Rally Championship all have entries, as do the winners in the Fiesta Sporting Trophy, Citroen C2R2 Cup and Suzuki Swift Challenge. On top of this there is the biggest prize of all, the BF Goodrich Driver’s Team car.

Rally of Scotland also has the team that started rallying in Scotland 40 years ago on the Scottish; the Armed Forces Land Rover team and all the competitors in the National B section on the Saturday. All this and 4 hours of live television on Eurosport, highlights every day, spectacular locations for the stages and service.

The event IS going ahead; this will be a fantastic show and competition, with many very exciting items still to be announced. And there is always the sight of Jim Mcrae back out in the Ford Sierra RS Cosworth that won the Scottish in 1988.

Pressrelease today:

All but one of the Intercontinental Rally Challenge’s seven manufacturers will represented on RACMSA Rally of Scotland next month, the man in charge of running the event has confirmed.

Clerk of the course Iain Campbell said he was pleased with the level of interest showed by competitors so far and added that the variety of different cars would guarantee thrilling action on the stages when the event runs from November 19-21.

“Although both the IRC and 2WD Cup titles are wrapped up, almost every manufacturer will be represented and that’s great news,” said Campbell. “It’s fair to say we haven’t got as many entries as we had hoped but the quality is impeccable and it will be good for the British drivers who will get a lot of the attention.”

Great news for the fans who have followed the action in 2009 is that Czech hero Jan Kopecky is one of those set to take part. Despite surrendering the battle for this year's IRC crown to Kris Meeke in Sanremo last month, Kopecky will aim to end his season on a high in Scotland.

Kopecky, who cannot be caught for second in the drivers’ standings, is likely to drive a privately-run Skoda Fabia 2000 because the factory team, who whom he has driven all season, have not included the Scottish round in its original schedule.

David Bogie, the winner of the Motor Sports Association-sanctioned Scottish Rally Championship, will make his Intercontinental Rally Challenge debut on Rally of Scotland next month.

The 22-year-old from Dumfries clinched the Scottish title on the Colin McRae Forest Stages in early October. The event uses the same stages that will be included in the itinerary for the IRC finale on November 19-20.

“There was no way I was going to miss this – it’s such a huge event and it’s coming to my country,” said Bogie, who will drive a Ralliart Lancer E9. “I know the terrain and the stages but I don’t for one minute think I will be on the same pace as the leading IRC boys. But I’d like to think I can put on a good show.”

Bogie, who is highly rated in his homeland, is one of three local drivers to have won a free entry for the gravel event as part of his prize for finishing in the top three of Scottish Group N classification.

He joins a wealth of top talent from across Great Britain and Ireland including newly-crowned IRC champion Kris Meeke, this year's MSA British Rally Championship winner Keith Cronin and former British and Asia-Pacific champion Alister McRae

The Intercontinental Rally Challenge will feature two mixed surface events next season. And Kris Meeke, the IRC drivers’ champion, said he cannot wait to take on the challenge of competing on gravel and asphalt on the same rally.

IRC’s provisional 12-event calendar for 2010 will include mixed surface rounds in Italy (Sanremo) and Cyprus. Drivers will tackle one leg on asphalt before switching to gravel for the other leg, with teams required to make alterations to the set-up of their cars during the overnight halt.

The format will not only test the teams, but will also require the drivers to adapt their driving styles from one day to the next.

“It’s an awesome calendar with some classic events,” said Meeke. “I can’t wait to get started and the mixed surface rallies are going to be something really different and really exciting.”

Citroen WRC driver Sebastien Ogier wants to defend his Monte Carlo Rally victory by entering the opening round of the Intercontinental Rally Challenge next January.

Ogier delivered victory at the wheel of the BFGoodrich Drivers’ Team Peugeot 207 S2000 with a mature performance on the world's most famous rally back in January. Now he wants to return for the spectacular event when it opens the IRC's 2010 calendar.

“I would have to drive a Peugeot again because of my relationship with the Peugeot family through the Citroen brand,” said the 25-year-old Frenchman. “I would also have to make sure that I am in a car that I can fight to win. If these two things happen then I would love to do the event because it is very important and a very tough challenge for any driver.”

Ogier competes for the Citroen Junior Team on the WRC but has made no secret of his desire to tackle more IRC events. Next year’s Monte Carlo Rally takes place from January 19-23 and includes 14 hours of live television coverage.

So is Christmas. 9 days to go, should've been out by now. Let's hope tomorrow.

Martin Kangur is little surprise for me. He is the protege of Urmo Aava with Urmos co-driver Kuldar Sikk. He is driving the latest Civic R3 car. So, In Scotland it seems that the best thing can expect is the fight in 2WD. We have five S2000 cars but most probably only 2 of them are going to fight with each-other

Mmm, extremely disappointing entry. Not sure it's worth paying the £50 ticket to watch that, and I had booked time off months ago.
Personally, I think that a current Scottish round should have been chosen, rather than inventing a new Rally. But of course, that would mean no money for IMS. Sad, as there was a lot of good will to the event when it was announced.

It's only the first Rally Scotland and the being the last in the series and Meeke's domination it got a bum deal but with a better (slightly) date next year it should be better.

Cyprus is the last round next year. Maybe the Scottish organisers could have used some of the promotional budget to sweeten the entry list?

The entry is poor, but in IRC competing in all rounds is not compulsory and the championships are decided.

I am sure having it as penultimate round next year will make it better.

With the lack of entries, should the organisers been more pro-active and paid/invited the other top IRC cars/drivers to the event?
Even the National event which runs for 3 stages on Saturday has a small entry, but still runs - so there is obviously a lot of money behind the event.

Noel: It's not always just about engine but at least it's always connected with it somehow. Kris Meeke also retired with engine problems in Rallye du Mont Blanc, Loix had problems with engine electrics in Rallye du Condroz. Vouilloz had an engine fire in Barum Rally. There were also quite a lot of engine troubles with Peugeots here in CZ.

He used his budget for start with 207 S2000 in Waldviertel rather than going to Scotland. He used Waldviertel as important test for next season as he said learning new car on familiar roads is better for him. He is in Scotland for recce.
