The World Touring Car Championship will introduce its new compensation weight system for the first time in the next round of the season in Morocco.

The system will see each model of car given a set weight on the basis on the best lap time of the two fastest cars of each model during qualifying and during both races on each weekend.

The calculation is based on a three event rolling average, but will come into play after the first two events of the year meaning that the lap times in Brazil and Mexico will determine the weights for the Marrakech race weekend.

Following the opening races of the season, the SEAT Leon TDi and the BMW 320si have both been handed compensation weight of 40kg to add to the minimum weight of 1170kg as defined in the sporting regulations.

The Chevrolet Cruze, LADA 110, SEAT Leon TFSI and the BMW of Alex Zanardi – which is fitted with a sequential gearbox – will also have 20kg deducted from their minimum weight.

What happened to the WTCC adopting BTCC style varibale grid reversals? I heard about it in the off season but so far they have just been doing the same predictable top 8 grid reversal for race 2.
