That's a great video! They both look fast but Duval in particular looks stunning, on the rev limiter in top gear round some bends!

The Polo sounds a little nicer than it used to now, must have been some engine upgrades this year. Very similar to the Skoda (same base engine)

Can the Polo "Learn" anything from the Fabia, or is the same driver as fast with both of them ?

We have 2 Top drivers with 2 Good cars, that are both being very well prepared by the same team.
For now its to early to say, but for sure both drivers are in good position for good result in Iepers.

Bengue's Corsica is nice!

Onboard from Duval: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UTqbtdEegSA

He says after the first test runs that he thought the Punto's engine was better but they made some adjustments which made the car better. I am really surprised at that, because I don't think the Punto's engine is better in any way shape or form! My only guess is that the Punto was running a shorter gearbox which was better for accelleration but not top speed. Or have S2000 weights increased since he drove Punto on Condroz?

Mirek
14th June 2009, 20:15
Yes, S2000 got 50 kg more and second one also yes, Fabia has longer gearing than that Punto probably had. Also the first two gears are visibly longer in Fabia in my opinion.

Very hard to tell, they are all close. Loix and Duval will be fighting for first, some other might be as well as I think some will make mistake and go off. I you see the skoda's, it's nuts: they throw the car a lot but that's something not to do in Ypres with all the ditches (although it's nice to see). With this driving style on my stopwatch they were fastest and at the endm just before leaving, Neuville and Loix did a very agressive pass as well, don't know if there fastest times were realised then.
Let's all hope that spectacular driving brings fast times and then we might see a very spectacular rally!

Btw Meeke had I puncture on his first real run (at least that is what we could see), but apparantly it was worse...

Shakedown was very nice to see, and i must agree with HACO, i also think that drivers like Meeke and Hanninen were cutting to deep. If they continu doing that during the rally, i think it will be hard to not have any puncture or even worse.
If you had a look at the times after first two runs, then the fastest ones were Loix and Kopecky with Duval being 1 sec behind. Also Vouilloz and Neuville did very well. Disappointing times by the two Punto's and also for Snijers in the Polo.
After many runs Duval set equal fastest time as Kopecky and Neuville, very impressive by Neuville, first time in 4x4 and only 21 years old. He might have brillant future in front of him.
We will see during rally, but then you have only one run and you have to be fast right away, so my bet goes to Loix, Kopecky, Vouilloz and Duval. :)

ooks like Loix, Meeke and Kopecky are already in one league, with a second group (Tsoken, Neuville, Hanninen, Basso and Casier) not so far. The rest is vey faraway.

Saw some brave driving today from Loix, Meeke, Kopecky!, Neuville and Wilks (too bad the last two retired). In a league of their own me thinks. Snijers with serious revproblems, Vouilloz started with an off and a bit of damage (see photo), Tsjoen and Hanninen going steady, and the likes of Solowow, Donchev, Fontana, Betti and Lavio learning the typical roads of Ypres. I didn't even see Duval nor Bengue with the Corsa, big dissapointment there. I still find him an extremely fast guy, but this was just an epic fail from François..

Hopefully tomorrow lots of action again on the stages. Hope you guys home are entertained ;) and Ypres can stay an IRC event..

In my opinion there is no such rule existing and moreover Ypres is run as European championship event which is higher FIA level and the rulles must suit it. It's for the first time in ERC this year so I think it's just a case of this particular event (and for Monte Carlo also).

Look at Targa Florio, Rossetti (Punto) beated Travaglia (Skoda) by ample margin.

Heh... Travaglia was driving new car for him, without setup and without test. He crashed early on shakedown and started making setup for his car after SS3. They also didn't have enough spare parts and the car was repaired only provisionaly. At the last section he had oil leaking from dampers. That can't be compared in any way.

Basso is european champion, multiple italian champion, winner of several IRC rallys (Sanremo, Asturias, Ypres for example) and was able to fight for IRC title last year until the last rally. Have You followed IRC before?

Punto is slower, unfortunately it's fact. Almost any rally result in the world is a good proof. One win for Rossetti changes nothing on dozens of other results...

I also agree with RS that Rossetti is faster than Travaglia. Basso and Rossetti defeated Travaglia in almost every rally in last couple of years whey they were starting often with same cars.

Ok I know he is very consistent, but I don't have a high reputation of him anyway, disappointed me too many times. He is not a "winner" enough ...

With same possibility, a lot of other italian drivers would have won a lot more.

For me Punto and Fabia are similar :P in IRC we had Rossetti at Monte to see real car potential but he crashed in SS1...

Just by curiosity, how do you rate Pug207 compared to Fabia then ?

Mirek
20th June 2009, 16:52
That's hard to say. My opinion is that Pug has stronger engine but Fabia very good suspension with great Reiger dampers, also traction on gravel. Pug seems to be much harder to me. I think that the more rough and bumpy surface, the better for Fabia and vice versa. But that's realy only my opinion ;)

I think that Abarth has weaker engine even visibly for spectator despite it usualy uses short gearbox unlike Peugeot and Škoda.

tolis

I think the Fabia and 207 are very close, despite the fact they seem to have quite different characters.

But as Mirek says, you can see quite visibly the Punto has a much weaker engine, particularly on low down torque (where I think the Fabia might be better than the 207 even)
