there is an expression in this business that you can't polish a turd
Not even the best driver could [i][b]polish a turd.
The well known expression that "You can't polish a turd" was uttered in the Oval Office by the 33rd President of the United States, Harry S. Truman. Famously he's also known for "The buck stops here" sign that sat on his desk (though that phrase didn't originate with him.
It seems that... he was wrong. You actually can polish a turd... though I'm not about to attempt this at home:
