View Full Version : It's not REALLY chaos, is it?

Looking at the headlines this morning you'd think a new ice age had just dawned.

Looking out of my window it looks like there's been 2 inches of snow.

The TV news had a shot from the Brecon Beacons (never the greatest spot for nice weather) pointed straight into the wind so that the snow looked bad, but it was obvious that there was barely an inch on the ground.

Another bulletin showed a CCTV shot from Tower Bridge, accompanied by the usual doom and gloom about congestion. In London? At 8am? Who'd have thought it?

A few airports have been closed, not surprisingly, but the gridlock and chaos gleefully predicted by the media just hasn't happenned. But that hasn't stopped the BBC One O'Clock news spending 14 minutes (so far) documenting every last snowflake.

I can't wait to see The Express tomorrow!

Chaos is when all schools close because there is 3cm of snow on the ground. However, there only being 2.5cm of snow here this morning Chaos was narrowly avoided.

Shame really.

You're right it isn't chaos at all. Just try telling that to the idiot doing 30 in a 60 with all his fog lights on though. :s

I want MORE though & I'd really like it as soon as possible, please. :D

Shutting all the schools meant that my 40 minute commute was cut to 15 minutes. Its almost as good as half term traffic. Give me a few inches of snow anyday.

I did drive past the GMTV camera's this morning where they were supposedly reporting live from Birmingham, not they were actually in Birmingham at all and they had their cameras positioned in a place that made the snow look worse than it actually was.

I am in Birmingham and we've had the best part of 10 cm (4 inches), but its hardley chaos.

You bet. In a week here, the minimum temperature was 22 (in the wee hours, one day), and most days got to 35/36 at noon. I can assure that I'm missing my Saskatchewan winter :mark:

the snow was quite poor, after being promised 10cm overnight in bristol, we were lucky to get 3cm. still had enough to build a snowman though, which was quite cool before uni lectures, not often you do that!! :p :

If you don't want the snow, I can take it. :D Hasn't snowed here since the last big meltdown, now it doesn't melt anymore - -26*C does its work nicely. :s mokin:

Usual mess at work, runway closed until 11, loads of cancelled flights. Ryanair passengers camping out all over the place, looked like London Underground in the blitz :D

Did they really have to delay 'To Buy or Not To Buy' this morning to broadcast a news special about the snow. Spoiled my morning TV that did. :p :

It's the same with the trains. Everybody stays at home, so you don't get the idiots holding the doors open, so they trains actually run on time.

There was more congestion on London Bridge today due to the traffic survey being done than there was yesterday with the snow.
Yes great idea reduce the main road into the City from the Sarf by shutting it down to one lane to ask commuters if they think the traffic is bad?

Or perhaps they were surveying people on Hungarian turkey smuggling immigrants from Tilbury Dock!

Complete and utter gridlock tonight in Birmingham city centre! Its taken me best part of 5 hours to drive 8 miles home. I cant decide who I dislike most, the people who'd abandoned cars in fast lanes with no hazards on at all or the people who dont realise its better to try drive in a higher gear in this weather, first gear and a load of wheel spin wont get you anywhere.

Well I take back my other post... because I think chaos is exactly how I would describe it last night. Took me just over an hour to walk home in the snow (though I'm lucky I lived close enough to work to do that)... people were stranded, gridlocked traffic, cars skidding everywhere, I even found a poor lady in a phonebox in tears because she'd just had an accident and was waiting for a lift... :( Last night was just the most surreal journey home!

Hazell B

It's pathetic :mark:

Two inches of snow and the country half stops. Ten years ago if you were late for work in the snow, you were simply told you should have set off earlier. Now they ring in and check the office isn't shut then set off for a two mile journey on low profile tyres and wonder why they get stuck

Only difference it's made to me is that the dog needed an extra jumper and I get to sit watching News 24 laughing out loud at people who can't get out of three inch snow 'drifts' in perfectly good cars because they don't understand friction.

Any real snow and I shall be charging twenty quid to tow them out :p :

Brown, Jon Brow

Not any snow here

There can't have been much snow, because I don't even think Shap fell was blocked.

All those poor southern fairies crying because it's chilly and there been a dusting of snow.

Think what it's like for my brother in the Cumbrian pennines, having to dig his buried sheep out of a snow drift in a blizzard at 2AM.

Sheep are the most annoying and most cunning of all the animals. In the morning they have a meeting and say ' how can we annoy farmer today, I know, let's pretend we don't want our lambs!' However sheep might be a good investment at the moment with bird-flu!

Hazell- if you want some land, ask my mum if you can rent some of her 200+ acres. ;)
