Are there any intersting/famous landmarks in the region where you live?

These are near me.

But not the tallest spire ;)

In Norwich we have, I think, the second tallest spire in the country.

Near Lancaster we have Lancaster University

Yeah, it's a similar shape. It lights up at night, and can be any colour. It looks pretty cool when it starts changing colours, but it's usually just like this, the colours of Barça. Kind of ironic, though, when they're telling you to conserve energy and water. It's owned by the water company.

As a little contrast, near the Sagrada Família, there's this :

Quattroporte

Same as Tannat, because he's my neighbor! :) I'd also add the Mississippi River itself but many cities can claim that.

Bucharest is a boring city and it hosts an ugly building, People's House ( these days it's the Palace of Parliament ). It's famous cos it's associated with Ceausescu's madness and cos it's the second largest building in the world and the largest in Europe.
And if it wasn't enough I work just across this horrible thing and I have to see it through the window 8 hours/day.

I suppose the biggest landmark for Stranraer (where I'm from) is this:

http://www.geograph.org.uk/photos/16/43/164309_10da7d52.jpg

Not the best of picture to actually make out what it is I must admit! It's actually the ferry terminal for Stena for both conventional and HSS ferry services to Belfast. In 2 years time though the ferries are moving further round Loch Ryan to Cairnryan and the terminal here will be replaced by, amongst other things, a casino.

Where I currently live is a bit small for too many landlmarks so will have to make do with this wee one:

You think that's ugly? I actually think it's quite good for a tall building, although maybe from different angles and in different light it might not look as good.

I dunno, some of Birmingham is pretty bad - certainly New Street is the most hideous railway station in the world and a serious contender for most hideous building.

As for landmarks near me? Err, lemme think... well the State Government that gave away Rally Australia would suggest the Perth Bells but that would be a load of BS. No nothing springs to mind, although The Pinnacles are a couple of hours away and they are quite impressive.

Mark in Oshawa
13th February 2007, 14:28
We have nothing around here to compare to some of the great strurctures and sites some of you have posted. The only real "landmark" of note in Oshawa (my hometown) is the estate of R.S. McLaughlin, who was a great phlantrophist as well as president of GM of Canada. He built the McLaughlin Carriage works into McLaughlin Automobiles, and then worked out an agreement with GM to become McLaughlin Buick, and finally, just GM of Canada after WW2. His estate in the middle of Oshawa is a preserved piece of a mansion that is very typical of the Capitalist Barons of the first part of the last century. It is fully in in the condition it was when he passed, and it really looks almost if if he could pop out of a doorway at any time. He gave the estate to the Oshawa General Hospital next door to run as a tourist attraction, and it is that. Many movies and TV shows have been shot there, including a lot that many of you might have seen.

For a city that was basically a frontier bush community in 1850, it is the best we got.....

If anyone wanted to know what is the other side of me to the west, instead of Peterborough...we have this fine example of a city, with the world's first retractable roof stadium that WORKS ( Take THAT Montreal!) and the world's highest free standing Structure, The Roger's Centre (Formerly Skydome) and CN Tower are in plain sight in this photo:

Mark in Oshawa

Here is the Toronto Skyline taken from Toronto Island, a land mark of park land out in Lake Ontario opposite the downtown core. The CN Tower and the Roger's Centre (home of the Blue Jays, Argo's and the Buffalo Bills for two games a year!) are the two most unique building's easily visible in this picture. CN Tower is still the tallest free standing structure in the world but I think a tower in Kuala Lumpur or Singapore is due to pass it eventually. 1815 feet or 551 metres I believe. The Skydome-Roger's Centre is the first retractable roof stadium of this size that actually worked although it is a little sterile compared to newer ones now....

The Town of Midland claims Martyrs Shrine and St. Marie Among the Hurons (Restored fort/village of the Huron Indians/Jesuit Missionaries more or less wiped out by the Iroquois) but both are actually in Tay Twp. where I live.
Not too far away is The Big Chute Marine Railway on the Trent Severn Waterway. Supposedly the longest Marine railway in the world able to take boats up to 70 feet. There are warning signs about Rattlers posted but I have never seen one nor has anyone I know. It is their territory though.

I have driven a car under the Monitor/Merrimack tunnel a few years back and saw the carriers at anchor from a distance at the naval yard. I want to go back and take any tour that they offer to get close to the carriers.

The Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel is quite a trip to take. You start in Va Beach and end up in a very quiet rural area. The outer banks of VA have built up some but resisted major development for years.

There are some small islands at the end of the CBBT and many years ago I actually ended up spending the night on one of them... in a helicopter! We had an issue and the pilot landed rather than risk it. One of the locals brought us a bunch of seafood and refused to take payment for it. :)

If you ever do make the trip, drop me a line. You should be able to get on the Naval Base for a tour. And if you're spending any amount of time in the area I could check out and arrange that for you, and possibly other things if you are interested.

Oh, and to all... my apologies for the monster pics. By the time I realized I had linked the full sized versions it was too late to edit.

God, the most boring thread EVER
Heck I live next to where many autopsies are performed, and would post pictures, but the relatives might object....

Town of Landmark is about half hour SE of me.
Does that qualify as a Landmark?
