So I've been catching up with gaming on m PS2, and finally finished a complete championship on the game WRC (the first one, and only one available in the States), and I'm a bit disappointed.
Granted, it does have 14 distinct rallies with 5 stages each + bonus stages (LOTS of stages!), and it does have all the factory entries in authentic liveries for the 2001 WRC season, and you see 'real driver' names on the scoreboard (Sainz, Makinen, etc) although Colin McRae is referred to as 'Ford driver'. The grpahics are what you would expect from a circa 2001 game-probably pretty darn good when it was in its prime.
My disappointment comes from a bit of the hover feel for the car. It's not as bad as VRally 3, but not as good as CMR3,4,5 etc.
More diasappointment from unrealistic car gearing. In the tallest gear you will frequently bump the rev limiter on many of the champ stages. Rarely is the medium gearing necessary, and short gearing is worthless.
While I've only tackled one rally on the highest difficult setting I sense that it will not be too challenging. And there are no superspecials-but that isn't too much of a bother.
I guess after years of seeing this game posted on the WRC site in various iterations (WRC2, 3, etc) I had hoped for more, but feel a bit let down.
Perhaps the got it right in later editions :(
