:bandit:
Well, in this lull between seasons of racing on the black stuff, at least there’s the “Dakar” to watch which has been transferred to South America and is being held over a 6000km route through Argentina and Chile between 3 and 18 January 2009 with entries including 230 motorcycles, 82 trucks and 218 buggies and 4wd’s.

As most would know, last year’s “Dakar ̶( Lisboa-Dakar) had to be cancelled due to threats from whacko terrorists :bomb: having regard to the safety of participants and organisers.

The last event in 2007 has been televised daily and was shown in Australia on SBS TV. Check your local programs.

An extreme adventure between two oceans

The Dakar 2009 is off to discover a new continent, South America that offers unlimited possibilities to amateurs of wide open spaces. The round trip to Buenos Aires, via Valparaiso is a challenge in which the most enduring competitors will find their way and have the opportunity to distinguish themselves. With close to 6,000 kilometres of specials and difficulties scattered on the whole course, the battle for the title will remain wide open until the finish.

It seems silly that after letting the terrorists win, they still call a rally in South America the Dakar.

Thanks Rod  Unfortunately it doesn't look as if Sky Sports here is showing Dakar, I would have enjoyed watching it as there isn't much else that has my interest on the sports channels during the summer.

Try SBS' website for updates and hopefully some footage.

The website is great thanks. I've been watching the video clips for the stages. The website's 'regular' size screen is brilliant. I thought I'd get the dreaded "not available in your area" but thankfully not.

My friends sometimes ask me which Dakar you're watching.

Tell your friends it's the bloody hard, dusty one on SBS website referred to in this forum!

My new heroes - Dakar motorcycle riders, even those that go off track and ride around in the scrub for a while. The dust!

French motorcyclist Pascal Terry has been found dead after going missing on Sunday. If as has been reported, he ran out of petrol I find it difficult to understand why it took three days to find him as I'm assuming all competitors have some sort of locator thing. Dakar is a dangerous sport and crashes are to be expected but this seems a particularly sad situation.

Mmm, it's a sad situation when someone loses their life on a massively challenging event where getting to the end is reward in itself for most of the guys involved.

Hard too when many of the people competing aren't 'names' that we've heard of, so it's harder to relate and feel as connected in spite of the risks involved being more than most of what we're familiar with.
