So, did the New Zealand election get any publicity around the world? Does anyone know the players?
I, personally, am not a fan of our new beloved leader, John Key. He's pledged to cut taxes. Either he won't do it, and will have lied about this, or he will, and cut public services to compensate. As someone who works for a government department, I find this idea troubling.
I think voting for tax cuts is one of the most selfish political acts one can do this side of a coup. inevitably, services will be cut, possibly welfare or education, or even health... but then Key will cut these services anyway, so he might as well give tax cuts.
I heard on the radio this morning that he plans on creating committees of business people to look into government departments and look for ways to cut spending.
This will probably mean firing "bureaucrats". Great - fewer hospital administration staff will mean that doctors and nurses will have to do all this work, as well as our own!
