Monteiro in purchase talks of GP2 team

Former F1 driver Tiago Monteiro has confirmed
into talks with GP2's BCN Competition. He also
admitted that he has to get the sponsorship
aboard.

"To cross over to the other side of pitwall and head the undertaking of a project such as this is very stimulating for a driver," the former Jordan and Midland F1 driver said.

"It means that I will need to find partners as well as sporting and commercial solutions that will guarantee that the company can be competitive. But even if the negotiations are well advanced, it is important that everyone understands that nothing is finalised."

Yeah, I heard about this a few weeks ago.

I know nothing of Monterio's ability to run a team, but BCN has been a joke for some time now. Not content with simply being the slowest team on the grid and ruining Valles' reputation, they ended up fielding just one car at the last race due to budget reasons, and haven't tested in the off-season. They seem a little better in the Asian series, but that's largely because many of the other teams don't seem to be taking it seriously, hence the driver lineup.

They only really got given the entrance to GP2 in the first place because their driver Toccacelo finished 2nd in the final year of F3000, but that was in a depleted field, and it appears to be more down to the driver than the team. I was actually a little surprised that they were allowed back in 2008 as there were rumours that a number of teams would lose tender to other, more established teams coming in that would perhaps be less reliant on pay drivers.

I wonder if Monterio will field himself if this goes ahead.
