FERRARI are ditching their electronic pit stop system after their Singapore Grand Prix cock-up.

Team boss Stefano Domenicali announced yesterday Ferrari would be re-introducing a lollipop man for the crucial final three races of the season.

This season Ferrari had installed a traffic light-style set-up that turned green when it was safe for the driver to move off after refuelling and tyre stops.

But Ferrari lost valuable ground on championship leader Lewis Hamilton when the system went badly wrong in Singapore 11 days ago.

Race leader Felipe Massa was given the signal to leave the pits while his refuelling hose was still attached.

The green light would usually come on automatically when the fuel hose is removed from the car, but the system had been set to manual.

Massa had to stop at the end of the pit lane and wait for mechanics to arrive and remove 12 feet of hose which was still attached to his car.

He then copped a 10-second stop-and-go penalty for violating safety rules.

With neither Massa nor world champion Kimi Raikkonen earning a point for Ferrari, Brit Hamilton was able to stretch his championship lead over the Brazilian to seven points when he brought his McLaren home third.

Ferrari suffered a similar problem at the European Grand Prix in Valencia and Domenicali admitted it will be back to basics at this weekend’s Japanese Grand Prix at Fuji.

He said: “Right now we need to stay calm and therefore we’ve decided to go back to the old system.”

• THERE will not be an F1 race in North America next year after the Canadian Grand Prix was dropped from the calendar for the 2009 season.

But there will still be 18 GPs as a new race in Abu Dhabi will finish the season.

The British GP is scheduled for Silverstone on June 21 – possibly the last time the Northamptonshire circuit hosts the event.

Being late is better than never, is the phrase to describe late decision of ferrari against the light system.

That penalty sounds harsh, it's not driver's fault, although without that fuel hose accident and penalty will not warrant anybody to finish in front of Alonso,

Could they not have the lollipop guy dressed as the Grim Reaper, and have a scythe as the lollipop. If he makes a mistake, it's off with the drivers head...... ;)

I bet it will work better. Just because it will be properly implemented under the direction of a certain Ross Brawn.

Interestingly, Honda have adopted a traffic light system for the Japanese GP.

Apparently they're only testing it, they aren't using it in a race this year.

Ferrari still managed to mess up Massa's release with the lollipop in qualifying (Q3 I think?), nearly into the path of another car, although I think he struggled to find a gear so maybe not entirely to blame...
