I'm trying to find out more about a Swift 010c, chassis number 004, it is CART registered chassis number 420.

I was originally told it was a Newman/Haas car for 1999 but now it appears to be from Patrick Racing. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I believe the car now resides with an owner who wants to streetify it.

Yeah, hoop, believe Rob is the one doing it.

Rob, Have you contacted Swift directly? They should be able to tell you at least who purchased it from them.

I'll keep trying.

I know Patrick tried out the Swift for Fernandez and Jones and they acquired them second hand from Newman-Haas, though I'm not sure if one of them might've been a former Della Penna chassis (which I think was also acquired used from Newman-Haas).

WOW, it's been over a year since this thread has been updated!

I found the info I was looking for and have made some nice progress on the car. It's only a set of calipers and an engine away from being driven!

Patrick Racing purchased chassis numbers 1,4 (mine), 6 and 10 new from Swift in December of 1998. They cost about $490,000 each plus a speedway aero package for an additional $125,000. I feel that i got a heck of a bargain considering how complete my car actually is.

I'll post some pictures soon.

Casper was a race engineer at Hogan, and then went to Swift. Each chassis was typically assinged to a team (chassis#/Eng/Team), and there should be a list somewhere. Alex Cross used to be in charge of the CART program.

Newman/Haas, Patrick, Della Penna, ForsytheCR, Coyne and Gordon ran them in one form or another. I checked a real old list I had, and 010 does appear to be a Patrick/Ford, but not sure if it changed hands since then.

Good luck.

I have been in contact with Swift and 01, 04, 06 an 10 were all Patrick cars IIRC. My car was for sure as it still has the main colors of the Visteon livery.

I forgot to update with pics.....I'll try to remember to do so this evening.

Thanks for the help, it's very much appreciated.

The R1 engine (with it's 6-speed sequential gearbox) weighs a mere 156 lbs and puts out 175hp at 13,750rpm. It may not go like it once did but at least it will have the right sound. Much better than a SBC in my opinion. Here it is resting within the fixture. The frame will be built around the engine and fit inside the fixture to ensure the car will go back together straight and with the correct wheelbase.

Are you actually going to use two engines plus turbo? :s mokin:

How many bhp are you expecting?

Rob'Swift
7th November 2009, 21:43
Just 175hp from a single NA R1 engine at this time. I then plan to add a turbo and later a second engine (both will be NA then) and in the end run turbos on both or one large single turbo for both.

Nah, I like the way "twin R1's with boost" sounds better.

This is the frame that will hold the Yamaha R1 bike engine and connect the tub to the gearbox (not complete but you get the idea). The square tubing is 1.25 X 1.25 X .120" wall. The flat bar is 1.5 X .375".

The 24 tooth sprocket (not pictured) will drive the 14 tooth driven sprocket for a 1.714:1 ratio. This will provide a geared top speed of 172 mph though there is currently not sufficient power to push through the drag created by the roadcourse aero package. By changing the gear selection in the R1 gearbox the overall gearing can be adjusted to suit different driving situations.

The right side tie-rod was bent so I set to work making a replacement.

After I cut the ends off.

I was unable to locate replacement ends for the tie-rod so I machined the old parts away from the tubing.

I couldn't machine my way out of a paper bag, but I am lovin' this thread regardless. Thank you so much for sharing all of these photos and your commentary. What a beautiful car.

I wish someone in my neighborhood was restoring a champ car!

I've been VERY busy on the car lately. The track event that I'm trying to prepare the car for is less than three weeks away. I think I can make it.

No idea what I'm looking at in half these pictures, but it looks like you're having fun man so good job. I used to build RC cars so I sort of vaguely know the feeling of putting your own sweat and time into this kind project. Hopefully you can do some local track racing with it.

I'm impressed with pretty much everything you've done so far, but that exhaust is AWESOME! Put some nice thin weld beads on there and it should be great. Keep the pics comming :-)

The exhaust needs some finishing welds (collector is only tacked on) but here it is...

I HATE talented people!!! Rob, it is one thing to maintain one of these monsters, but something completely else to do such a nice and usable modification. Thanks for sharing.
