Jonathan Adam looks set to move up to the BTCC racing a SEAT Leon TDI, providing he can find the addional sponsorship required to run the car. He's testing the car on Monday at Silverstone.

The full article on Knockhill.com said moving up with Total Control Racing. TCR are a great team and previous BTCC Independents' champions in their previous guise of Brookes Motorsport. I really hope Jonathan Adam can make the step up, I'm sure he'd make a very good touring car driver.

The top four finishers in the SCC are all testing on Monday

I hope Martin Byford and Rob Lawson are also able to step up to touring cars at some point, both of them deserve a shot at it.

Will anyone genuinely want that car? Personally I'd choose a petrol Leon over the TDi.

Considering the performance of the TDi it would be a gamble worth taking. It had its reliability problems but the car was very dominant in the second half of the year.

It's about time that Adam was in the BTCC!

I agree, and was a bit surprised to hear that GR had all but ruled out using the TDi for that very reason.

about time as well, I know he was looking at a Seat of some description but personally I would favour the petrol but the diesel has been reliable in WTCC but then again Northern South arent involved with that

hope he can get some sponsorship to get out there

Sorry to disappoint but as far as I'm aware there will be no customer spec Leon TDI's racing anywhere, the diesel engines were and still are for official works run cars only !

The test at Silverstone tomorrow is to reward the drivers that have took wins in the SCC. I think there are four different drivers testing the TDI...

I'm confused, wasn't the prize for winning the cupra's a SEAT backed drive in the BTCC?

Why did they have to leave anyway? They'd have been odds-on for the title next season.

The prize for winning the SEAT Cupra Championship was a works backed touring car drive. It does not mention which series.

Yeah Seat UK may own the cars but they are going to be converted to accommodate the petrol engine, the TDi engines are leased from Seat Sport Spain !!!

Couldn't a new team lease the engines too?

Well I'm not a liar but can't divulge where this info came from, all I can say is the Diesel engines are for Works cars only. Even when Seat UK had engine failures the engines had to go back to Barcelona !

The only engines available to independent teams are leased petrol engines or customer owned engines, if you own the engine then you can either have Seat do the rebuilds or buy an engine kit and have your own engine work done!

You don't have too now. It seems Seat have clarified the situation themselves: http://www.seatsportuk.co.uk/BTCC/2008_btccnews.asp?ID=1191113

I'm tipping Adam Jones for BIG things if he can land himself a works drive.

I have heard SEAT Spain have recovered all BTCC's TDI in their racing workshop in their homeland.
Poor Adam Jones, i think he would start to cry. :D

I suppose even in third party hands SEAT don't want their Leon's seen to be constantly breaking down. And since the TDI engines were run to promote and market that model of car, which an independent team wouldn't fully promote, there's no point letting anyone run the diesels.

Bit odd, given that they could be getting a bit of promotion for no effort on their part, rather like BMW with the independent entries in the BTCC.

But we saw how unreliable the tdi engine was in works SEAT hands maybe they fear that it would be bad publicity having an indipendant running them who would have little chance of getting to the bottom of the problem.

SEAT UK have now confirmed that the TDi cars will have Petrol units installed before they are sold.
