What do the zig-zag markings on the side of roads indicate?

What do the zig-zag markings on the side of roads indicate?
They mean that if you're a mum using a BMW X5 to pick your kids up from school even though the fat feckers only live half a mile away and the walk would do them good, it's okay to wait there for up to half an hour provided you park a couple of feet away from the kerb so as to block the road.

Or, in the frozen North, a Freelander driver with an ashtray to empty out of the window before the chubby smalls finish class.

God, I hate driving past schools :mark:

Pedestrian crossing ahead. No parking.
If they're painted in white they indicate the approach to a pedestrian crossing. Sometimes they are painted in yellow, usually outside school entrances, but sometimes outside police, fire or ambulance stations with appropriate "Keep clear" writing.
