Schmenke, if you had to suffer through an owner as inept as Harold Ballard, you wouldn't be so smug, and remember this also. The Habs are unlikely to win another for another 14 years as well. You guys were just plain lucky, and unlike some Habs fans, you are actually from Montreal. The Hab's fans I deal with grew up around here, and just locked onto a winning team as kids because they didn't have gumption to just cheer for the team in their own town......I have little time for THAT.

I wasn't trying to be smug :mark:
Yes, I was born and raised in Montreal, and as a kid I remember attending games in the old Montreal Forum, watching Lafleur with Lemaire and Shutt flying down the ice, with the Robinson and Savard on defence. Man, that was something special! The atmosphere was overwhelming! Loyalties are built up from experiences like that. How can I NOT be a Habs fan!
No matter where I live, my alegiance will always be intact ; :D

Tomi, saying he was a good skater was like saying Pope John Paul was Catholic. Lafleur was one of the best skaters of the era, and the only guy in that decade who could outskate him was my favourite, Bobby Orr. The two of them apparently were fast friends as roomates in 1976 in the first Canada Cup. Apparently the two of them had similar pre game routines, and it only was a problem because both of them liked having the dressing room to themselves and the ice in the afternoons to themselves.
Schmenke, even I had a soft spot for those late 70's Hab's teams, since I liked Robinson as much as I liked Orr in many ways, and he was the guy I tried to emulate playing myself. Of course, I didn't have his talent, but hey, a kid dreams don't he? I especially enjoyed the @ss kicking they gave the Flyers to win that first cup of the 4. I wasn't a big Hab's fan, like I said, but man, I loved seeing the Flyers get put down like rabid dogs. My dislike of Bobby Clarke and the Flyers has continued to this day, and they may be the one team I would always cheer for the Habs over!!!

Have you guys heard anything about the negotiations of possible Victoria Cup ?? What I heard they have a dream to make a three team cup where two of the teams comes from Europe and the third would be Stanley Cup holder. I find it very interesting as we could really see the level of European team hockey comparing to NHL.
Also, they have some sort of plans to build up a champions league in Europe, which they have already tried a few times but this time the model should be taken from soccer champions league. That at least has proved to be very succesfull consept. I guess this time, to make it really work, the reward money is in the different league than it used to be. That should motivate the national top teams to participate.
if I'm not totally wrong, they might use the champuons league finalists to take part to Victoria Cup which I mentioned earlier. I'm not just sure if NHL is interested of this plan :mark:

Bit of IIHF championships for a change.
Semifinal games are:
Russia - Finland
Canada - Sweden
I can't believe USA didn't win Finland today, our team gave the four goals to work with.
Lehtonen was in good form today, i almost for got his 7 goals few weeks ago. :)

Is Bobby Orr still living near Toronto? I met him once in my friends sport shop, he was here promoting CCM skates, he is a nice guy, pity he had so bad knees.

Not sure where he's living these days, but he's always been a real class player  One of the best skaters there ever was.
Bit of NHL trivia... he still holds the NHL record for a season-high plus/minus... at +124! :s hock:

I cant believe I go away for a week and a half and NO ONE mentioned on here on who won the WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS!!! The Canadians normally wouldn't mention it because we realize the best players are often still in the NHL playoffs or licking wounds from being eliminated from them. The Euros however are silent...mmmmm would that be because CANADA WON!!!!!!!!!
I was stuck in the US, and you don't get even get box scores of the NHL in some newspapers. So I had no idea until I got the newspaper in Windsor on Wednesday and saw a reference to it. Gotta like that......shame on you guys for not making some note of it.
Tomi, as for the whereabouts of Bobby Orr, he lives mainly in Boston, where he runs his player agency. He took it over after apprenticing under famous sports agent Bob Woolf. Woolf died in the late 90's and Orr took over the hockey side of the business. It is ironic the one player who was hurt so much by Alan Eagleson became an agent himself, but it makes the story of Orr probably more intriguing.
Orr's story is a cautionary tale to what happens to hockey players who don't pay attention to the business side of the equation when the big pay checks roll in. He has a rudimentry high school education, and he trusted Eagleson implicitily and was basically out of a career and broke in the late 70's through this. He took his fame, and the opportunity of being well known in Boston through his hockey exploits, to become a successful businessman and did a lot of work for charity in Boston, and back home here in Ontario. He is a very private guy, but I do know that he always goes back to Parry Sound Ontario where he grew up for visits and I am sure he has a cottage up there, but he remains based mainly in Boston.
I am envious Tomi, he is my hockey hero and yet I haven't managed to meet him....

Be careful Mark, you're too close the truth. Obviously i can't speak for other Finns out there but when it comes to me, damn right it's because Canada won. Things are different here in Finland. Do you have the slightest idea what it feels like to lick our empty fingers after we lost the finale for SEVENTH god damn time ??? This time it was easier because from the first minute of the game, it was clear that Canada will win. Team Finland's hockey was spiritless, worthless pathetic game and only the third period saved us from the total emberrasment.
Having said that, Con-****in-gratulations Canada, once again ;) :D

AFF, I hope you guys win one. I always cheer for the Finn's over the Russians, Czechs, Slovaks, Swedes, Swiss, Americans and Germans. Just you keep coming up against Canada when the chips are down and that hasn't worked out too well for you Finns.....
Schmenke, you do realize of course tho for me, this playoff is a horror show? I hate Ottawa, growing up in Southern Ontario means you know how insuffrable Buffalonians are when they are winning, so I have no dog in this hunt. Detroit will be my cheering faction because I lived in Windsor for a few years, but it is hard to cheer against a Canadian team with my Dad...he becomes an instant fan of the Canadian team in any final, and gets ticked when I adopt a team based on a player or two that I like as a person.....lol
Anyhow, I hate the Ducks. No matter who gets in from the East, they automatically will have my support of that jerk Brian Burke gets near a Stanley cup....

Mark in Oshawa
17th May 2007, 22:43
Don't worry Andy, Anaheim might use them up enough that Ottawa will likely win....
Don't know why you dont' like the Wings organization though. Ken Holland, Jimmy D, Scotty Bowman, Mike Babcock and Jim Nill are all quality people. Mike Illitch just lets them do their thing and they do it well. Chris Chelios is likely go on to the longest career in NHL history. A good guy too is Chelly, even if he spouts off. Ya Hasek is a bit of a loon, but he is a good goalie, and the fans there are enthusiastic, if not a little naive (Detroit is "hockey town?" Good lord, there are about 5 places in the US that could take that title over Detroit, and I wont even get into how stupid that sounds with Canadian cities lumped in)
That said, I like the old school uni's, I like Stevie Y and he is still on the management team in Detroit ( he also helped pick the Canadian team that just took the IIHF Worlds too) and the city of Detroit will still be a dump when the Wings win their cup. That city has taken a lot of knocks, and I don't mind them winning at all. God knows Ottawa fans will be insufferable if they win....

Ducks are up one....but they have brought back clutch and grab mugfest hockey and the stupid refs are letting them. ...no matter who wins, it looks like hockey is bound and determined to slide back to the dark ages. By Christmas next year, they will be water skiing on guys too...
Another question. It used to be, if a goalie was in the crease, he was not to be touched in any way unless he left the crease. Now the goalies are getting run all the time, but you cant even breathe on one if he is behind the net playing the puck. This is just retarded....

Andy, it is perplexing to us Canadians, but then we notice it was Ottawa playing for the cup, and we knew they would choke eventually...at least the Leaf's fans out there did!! Actually, I am disappointed to be honest. I was rooting for Ottawa. What most of the philistines down south don't know is that the Stanley Cup started in Ottawa. Lord Stanley of Preston was the Governor General of Canada and he fell in love with hockey when he saw the kids of the staff at Rideau Hall playing it out on the skating rink on the grounds. IN the early days of hockey at the end of the 19th Century and the start of the next, Ottawa was epicenter of the early pro circuits and the famed "Silver seven" were the kings of hockey at that time. It would have been appreciated in Ottawa whereas in Anaheim, half of the area probably have no clue there are even games being played.

Announced today, they sucked Sundin for extending his contract another year. So far, they keep wanting to bring back the same guys who didn't get them into the playoffs last year. Leaf's management still thinks if they made the playoffs they would have been able to compete, and what they don't seem to get is that this team cant be life and death to make the playoffs all year and then turn it on and win. Edmonton 2 years ago got lucky but they had some stars in Pronger and a goalie that got hot. It is not a given that if you make the playoffs all the stiffs you have now all the sudden will get better. The Leafs will keep struggling until the people running the team above the hockey department decide mediocre wont work no more. I suspect THAT day will occur the day Jim Balsillie moves the Pred's into Southern Ontario. It will be nice for an NHL team to be based in Southern Ontario, right now we just have 3 AHL teams. Just the Leaf's haven't figured out they should be in the A....

Another note. Alexi Ponkirovsky just became a Canadian citizen. He isn't a bad player, is a good guy and I hope that he becomes the player the Leaf's pay him as because up til last year I didn't think he belonged in the NHL.

Sundin was a good option.. he is one of the top players consistancy wise, Sundin also took a 800,000 dollar pay cut and only a one year deal which leaves the team to sign (hopefully!) a talented UFA for him to play along... The problem is not so much Mats but more the players he has been given to play with... most of them he has played along side were average , nothing to spectacular, mind you I did like Wellwood working along side him but tiem will tell...

Was listening to Leafs Lunch the other day and the re-signing of Sundin was discussed, 2 more years he's 36 years old. Not sure myself, providing the other players are good enough then yes, but if they keep all the current players then nothing will change. Regarding Preds moving, the more teams in Canada the better.

ya not very much to talk about this week really... The Rangers and Ducks look very strong after the huge additions in the offseason which no doubt cost them a very pretty penny... hey BTCC2 are you going to one of the NHL games that will be held in London? I'm quite excited for the leafs season as it looks one of hte more promising ones in years.. with the offseason additions of Vesa Toskala, Jason Blake and Mark Bell as well as Clemmenson the leafs looks strong.. There is still a few things missing liek a PK specialist (check this off if they re-sign Peca) a defensive D man (but 2 way players like Blake and Bell as well as getting a huge upgrade goaltender wise we should be ok) and now we need a future Captain.. and /or a Centre.. the only play besides Sundin I would be willing ot give the C to would be Tomas Kaberle.. Bryan McCabe or Darcy Tucker wouldn't be the best of choices in my mind.. You need a player that sets a good example and none do that better then Kaberle and Sundin.. looking forward to a very exciting season!

Mark, my Canadian friend, I just bought season tickets for the Houston Aeros, the AHL is not the NHL, but the games are good enough for me, which means I am know no longer a hockey TV fan, too bad the St. John's Maple Leaf don't play anymore (used to go to San Antonio {which was relatively close to Monterrey, Mexico} to see them play), but I will await nevertheless the Toronto Marlies.
Mark in Oshawa
8th August 2007, 19:47
Jose, the Marlies are likely to suck this year, for the Leaf's have. I wish they left the team in Newfoundland. The Marlies don't matter to people in Toronto, whereas they were the pride and joy of Newfoundland. The people there built a brand new arena (and likely would have anyhow but the spectre of losing the team sped the process up)to keep the team, only to lose them when the parent team had the chance to run the Ricoh Colisieum on the Exhibition grounds in Toronto ( the front door is about 100 yards from corner 10 on the Champ Car circuit).
Anyhow, enjoy the Aero's, who have been a pretty good team for a few years. The Hamilton Bulldogs (just down the road from Toronto and where I lived for 2 years) will also be by and they are a farm team of the Montreal Canadiens. They played the Aeros a few years back in the AHL finals and I was a fan of them more so than the Marlies. The Marlies just are a forgotten team in a city besot with love for the Leafs. The Bulldogs draw better averaging 5 thousand for most games.
I think hockey has always been a hidden gem in sport in the US. I know Americans love tough sports and love speed and excitement and it has always flummoxed me why they cant get more excited about hockey. Outside of a few states, it always seems like it is just a sideshow, much like Arena Football.

The Milwaukee Admirals don't get big crowds and they've been to two AHL finals, winning one Calder Cup in the past four seasons. But getting choice seats at the Kohl Center for the U. of Wisconsin college team is a tough task...even before they won the NCAA championship two seasons ago.

I keep hoping the people in the UK take to hockey in a bigger way. The fact you guys come on here and tell us about it BTCC and Andy, it gives me hope......
Of course, I never dreamed I would meet a Mexican hockey fan (and of the LEAFS yet!) so it is a strange world we live in....

Well it took a big leap in popularity with the introduction of the Elite League in 2003. But since then it has been going with no real improvements. I believe if they combined the EPIHL (The 2nd best UK league) it would make a huge difference as 10 teams isn't enough.

Don't follow British hockey too closely anymore, remember years ago it used to be on Grandstand of a Saturday afternoon - Durham Wasps were my team.
I know that now they have league as well as a cup competition, Why?
Just have one competion, expand the league into two conferences, take the example of the NHL, regular season followed by play offs.

There are play offs. The top 8 teams qualify for them which is stupid because after 54 games it only eliminates 2 teams. The Challenge cup is basicly there to give a chance of someone other than Coventry Blaze a chance to win something. Although last season they won the league and the cup.
How ironic it is that I was saying we needed something big to promote awareness of the league just yesterday and today it has been announced that there will be a EIHL programme on Sky Sports for the first time!!!!!
Anyway, the season starts again today, very excited.

Finnish national league started with one game. Heavy eyes on those who came back from NHL and got even heavier paycheck. Also, one particular defenceplayer, a living icon of one team, moved to another. Now, half of Finland is excited, no that he playes good but will he stay sober for the whole year
I somehow think we don't pay attention to what we should.

It was a great day out and thankfully it was a good game aswell after a 6 and a half hour drive.
Was very impressed with the standard of NHL as Mark In Oshowa told me it was much faster, the shooting was more powerfull and the passing incredibly accurate.
There was a fantastic atmosphere aswell, I'm not used to seeing crowds above 1,000 so it was great to see the 02 packed.
I was wearing my Newcastle Vipers top and saw plenty of other Elite league tops which was good.
The only downside for me was that I missed a Vipers game for the first time in 4 years. Fortunately we won 5-4.

Toskala has been nothing short of great... the team infront of him and Raycroft can't play any Defense! The numbers tell a different story then the game actually does.. another example is Toskala stopped 50 shots against the Pitts... yes 50... and let 5 in.. if you put Brodeur or Luongo in the net ... there would be no difference... the overpaid leafs defense are not earning what they have got thus far that for sure! if things continue heads will roll (mostly JFJ's and maybe Maurice?).. their defensive game is just attrotious... not justt he D but the forwards as well... having said that there are some positives like Raycroft and Toskala seem to have elevated their game because of the competition they are in against eachother... not to mention Nik Antropov has looked like one of the best players in the NHL so far.. and Mats Sundin has been a very strong presence with his 10 points in 7 games...not to mention him breaking Sittler's record for goals and points for a Maple Leaf.. Matty Stajan, Steen and Gamache have all been very pleasant to watch as well...
If the leafs can start playing D they will win games and be a legit contender...

I made my comment before seeing the goals conceded. Having listened to the Podcasts of 'leafs lunch' a number of callers wondered what the defense players were being coached. Most of the points were that they were far too slow, and kept turning the puck over in bad areas.

It's really to bad because the leafs have the most goals for then anyone else in the league.. there are a lot of players stepping up and putting the pucks in the net... once the D is fixed which I think it will within the next few games I think the leafs will be strong.. but until then they arn't going anywhere without some good D infront of Raycroft and Toskala... If the D wasn't the problem the leafs would be top 4 in the east thus far.. because both our goalies are rock hard solid and our Offense is busting out... but Defense wins cups and championships..

the word talented does not go beyond Toskala,Kabrele,Sundin,Tlusty and Antro thus far this season... The reason why they can't get it together is they have GM that is an idiot and a coach who has a decent system but it sacrafices defence... I read your post then watched the game vs the Pens a team I have long liked to watch[1970- before crosby].I have to admit Toskala looked very impressive but #1 Dude please I watch the #1 goalies every time the Wings pay.Hasak is still poor on high shots if you can get it passed his acrobatic legs and stick swinging through the air. Further more Osgood is still undefeated-dating back to last season.
To be a Goalie in Detroit,or a QB,powerfoward,or pitcher for thast matter you not only have to be great but we find you house and where you park your car and we have had people even coaches removed from our sports.I can't figure out the Millen thing in football here but look back even Sergi Federov was asked to seek employment elsewhere. You have to be good to play in Detroit.

To have the talent thats in front of him and not ask to opt out of his contract for a team that can put thier marque players on the scoreboard.I watched him last year and he was great, and in thge two games already this year against the Wings he keept things close enough for them cunukadanians to beat the wings but he team failed him both times.Even our homebot Morrison couldn't get things to fall right, not to mention the two twins with a minus 7 on the back to back series.

they should be alright.. just one game.. now try directing that to the leafs.. easily one of if not the most inconsistant team in the league.. Leafs win one leafs lose one by a big margin. they lose in OT, they blow a 2 goal deficit, they win one, they win another ,they get blown out... the story thus far and unless something is changed it will remain this way and RIP leafs playoffs hopes..

Not to say that Toronto is the same caliper team as Detroit this year.
I would never compare the Leafs to the Wings normally; however with the Wings talent pool in the last decade, we in the Detroit area have held up posters at games asking why the Wngs were just coasting through the regular season.Believe me they could have done alot better in many years of playoffs if they would have gelled sooner.
Side note:growing up I played and was billeted out to families in the greater Toronto area. I have alot of admiration for the people and the love they have for the game. And yes I have viewed the Leafs before Felix "The Cat" was ever a proffesional goalie.

Zetterberg tied a Wing record for longest point streak from the begining of the season, and Ozzie is still unbeaten.Hasek comes back in our next game welcoming Sergay Federov back to Detroit hosting the Bluejackets. He does still play here doesn't he? I am a huge hockey fan. Hockey represents team spirit more so than most other team sports, immense dedication (how many athletes lose their teeth, only to be back in the next shift as if nothing happened), speed. I love hockey.
As you are a maple leaf fan, how do you rate their team this year (main strengths and weaknesses). Sundin has been on fire, hasnt he? Will you make the PO? I havent been able to catch even one game of theirs this year.
Rangers have lifted their level lately, 7 wins out of 8 games, but I still feel they are lacking something. If Jagr, Drury and Gomez get in groove though, then things will be very difficult for everybody.
I am very dissapointed in the Penguins. With their level of talent, they shouldnt be last in their division.

I still like about Wings whats quite surprising for a Blues fan but what comes to Wings them needs something if them wants to win the cup. Them goalies Hasek and Osgood are just average level and you need them. Wings has showed in earlier years that a team what wins the regular season almost year by year just dont seem to win a cup and mostly has falled on 1st or 2nd leg. Them are quite good at home but cant seem to win away games. Also I see it quite surprising how well them does in offense, even when I dont see nothing special there. ok (Datsun) is ok and Zetterberg seems to continue to score and yeah Holmstrom is always on the zone and some guys like Filppula or Cleary can make a game to way or another. I think Wings is a strong team because of them defense as it has been for years but its not enough. Dont pick so many Swedes :P and get a good goalie(ok Osgood has won 8 games this season) and all should be well. Luckily the Wings has got away for "oldest player average title" I think.
What comes to my team Blues them started well but then lost a lot of games by a few goals. Ok we have won some top teams of the league but has lost to many teams what we should have won. We have quite an ok goalie and he has been saving a lot of games to us this season aswell and our 1st line(Kariya-Tkachuk-Weight) has some name but powerplay hasnt been too good and the poor home ice has been against us a few times aswell. I hope us to end up for a playoff spot but theres a long way to go but the future looks quite bright I think. Next up we will face the Blue Jackets and yeah I hope to see a win :)
For me the most surprising stuff still has been a poor start of the Sabres and the Devils on east and the great start of the Canes and the Blue Jackets.

I think my team can be summed up perfectly as the last 40 years in Maple Leafs history... ups and downs but avaerage.. Our coach who I was once a fan of is making terrible coaching desicisons (leting McCabe hog all the minutes and giving Andy Wozneiwski more minutes then our young GOOD defensive prospects like Kronwall and Stralman.. Our General Manager is a complete and utter moron.. trades Tukka Rask (our best prospect for Andrew Raycroft who had a terrible last season with the Bruins Yeeek!).. then our general Manager ties up about 20+ million to our BlueLine (Gill,Kubina,McCabe are the ugly examples) and gives McCabe,Kubina,Tucker NTC's like it's halloween candy..Our future looks bleek as we look to sit on mediocrity for a while..
Now the good signs... Kaberle got huge underpayment and a NTC (one of the best defenceman in the league, Sundin took a pay cut for the team, we did greatly improve our goaltending situation with putting Vesa Toskala.. With the few prospects we have we certainly got steals... like Kyle Wellwood, Alex Steen,Matt Stajan, Anton Stralman,Justin Pogge,Jiri Tlusty,Nikolia Kulemon.. and a few more to name of.. Nik Antropov,Kyle Wellwood,Mats Sundin,Tomas Kaberle,Kubina(before he got injured),Alexi Ponikarovsky,Steen,Stajan have been playing great hockey.. Vesa Toskala ,despite bad looking GAA has been stunning.. It's just the lack of D awareness and discipline has been the biggest factor to out losses... look at our team Goals Against and you will figure out why..
Leafs right now are 7-8-5.. If they keep playing like this they will not get into the playoffs If improvement comes over way via a trade or some how beating sense into our D .. then we WILL make the playoffs..
The thing is you know the Pens will get out of their slump.. same arguably (as much as it pains me to say it ) Vancouver and even Calgary.. this team.. very different..
AFF: I never heard of Koivu getting called out for unsportsman like conduct at the end of the game so I'm not sure at all...

Anyways, it's good to see him back although I think it'll be a a couple of weeks before we actually see him on the bench.
Back in September I took a chance on Selanne and picked him in my pool :D . I then dropped him in our 30-game redraft in December (and picked up Mike Richards  ). We have our second redraft coming up, and since I may be picking first (don't laugh  ), I may get to pick up Selanne again :D

I think had had his coat totally empty after finally winning Stanley Cup and wasn't really sure if he wanted to play anymore. Finnish athletics has this weird fashion novadays to retire on absolute top, like Marcus Grönholm in WRC.

that is true.. theres a good chance he won't waive it but we'll see.. If he doesnt I 100% understand and respect him for doing it.. if thats the case we would have to unload JFJ's huge arse contracts.. Just wanted to post something with regard to Florida Panthers RW Richard Zednik who suffered a horrible neck injury against the Buffalo Sabres the other day. One of his main arteries was cut accidentally by the blade of Panthers captain Olli Jokinen when Jokinen fell down after a check.
Zednik skated to the bench under his own power, and then was rushed to hospital. It was announced about 10 minutes after the incident that Zednik was in a stable condition.
He will be out for probably at least a couple of months, however it is speculated that he will be able to return for the playoffs should the Cats make it.
I wish him, his family and his teammates well after this frightening accident.

Here is how I see the first round shaking out:
WEST
Detroit should rule Nashville as I think the Preds are in disarray.
San Jose may beat Calgary but it will be close. Why? SJ lost two in a row after going 18-0-2. Losing streaks into the playoffs is a bad thing.
Minnesota should take care of Colorado because I don't believe in the Avs D and they are playing with past glory. This team is going to need a rebuild very soon.
Anaheim should defeat Dallas but this will also be close unless Brad Richards does not come back.
EAST
Montreal should beat Boston because if Boston brass doesn't believe in Tim Thomas then why should I? (although I do - I just do not understand that situation).
Pittsburgh is going to kill Ottawa because the Sens are another team in disarray with too many key injuries. This is NOT the same team that started 14-0-and whatever.
Philly is going to defeat Washington because the Caps are going to be like the Pens last year - no playoff experience.
New Jersey is going to beat the Rangers because the Rangers can't beat NJ and their captain is the uninspired Jaromir Jagr.
Garry Walker
7th April 2008, 23:54
New Jersey is going to beat the Rangers because the Rangers can't beat NJ and their captain is the uninspired Jaromir Jagr.
Well, in regular season it was 7:1 for Rangers against Devils...
My predictions:
Montreal vs Bruins - Habs in 5. Bruins will have nothing against Habs, loss of Koivu can impact Habs though.
Pittsburgh vs Ottawa - Pitts in 5. Hossa, Malkin, Crosby will be too much to handle, especially as Alfredsson will be out.
Philly vs Caps - Caps in 6. Fedorov has always shone in playoffs.
Rangers vs Devils - Devils in 6
Ducks vs Stars - Stars in 7 . Toughest to predict, these are both teams that could go all the way.
San Jose vs Flames - SJ in 6. Two teams I both quite like, but Phaneuf won`t save Flames against the superior talent of SJ. But if he can dominate against Thornton and Co in the first two games and get to them, it might change the series completely.
Detroit vs Nashville - Detroit in 4. Or Detroit could collapse, has happened before. But they are just too strong IMO.
Avalance vs Minnesota - Avs in 6. Forsberg, Hejduk, Sakic. Minnesota won`t handle it.

Sens are the first team to be eliminated from the NHL playoffs.
Nashville and Detroit series tied at 2. Who woulda thunk :mark:
Indeed.
I did think, though, that if Nashville can win one, they can do real damage to Detroit. For some reason Detroit is one of those teams that at times collapses against a weaker opponent in playoff (as they did with Edmonton few years back).
While logic would say that Detroit will win the next games, I am far from sure at this point and would even consider a bet on Nashville for overall win of series.
I didn`t get to see any Sens vs Pens games. Were the games more about Ottawa underperforming or Pens really being so strong?
IMO, any team will have it hard to beat the pens, they have all the required components for a great cup run, although I do have some doubts about Fleury. But when you have Malkin, Crosby and Hossa, you can manage.

Well, now my real hope is that Penguins and that diving crosby won`t win. Someone should kick the hell out of this little diving ****.
San Jose is really struggling to match Dallas at the moment and Avs has no chance against Wings :(

I don't think Carey Price is ready to carry the Habs to playoff glory. It's looking to me like an all Pennsylvania in the East.
It also looks like Detroit/Dallas in the West as Colorado just cannot seem to slow Detroit down and the Sharks were done in the first round, not aggression getting to the offensive zone and no physical play all the way around. They are just leaving Nabokov to do all of the work.

No they won't. They have Habs in their path to finale ;) That's assuming they get by the Flyers. ;)

Currently I am ashamed to be an Avalanche fan.
Injuries aren't helping against Detroit but 8 of the last 9 periods were very bush league and just flat out bad.

I hate to agree....
Habs vs. Flyers seem to be only tight pair of the remaining. Stars, Wings and Penguins seem to be just cruising to semifinals.

Just awful playoffs. All the teams I like are doing badly and the hated penguins and flyers are doing well :(
Oh well, Go stars

If Pens will the Cup, my bitter opinion is that is too much too for Crosby and Malkin

Oh well, Go starsI feel your pain...my two fav's (Minnesota & Nashville) lost in the first round and the Sharks (my next pick) are about to loose to the Stars. Now I'll just spend the rest of the playoffs hoping that the Wings get killed.

Ohhh....tough nuts for the Habs!
But, what pains me the most is that some of the guys that killed the Habs used to be with Nashville and Milwaukee...especially Scottie Upshall, which we traded for that waste of space Peter Forsberg.
Sorry Schmenke. Habs do not rule.

Apparently Stars want to proceed the hard way :mark: That's not a bad thing...the longer the Wings have to wait, the more they'll be out of game shape! :cheese: (I know it's a reach!)

I watched the penguins vs rangers game last night and the referees were shocking. I have seen such joke very rarely in professional leagues.
2 of Penguins goals were offside, they got away with double-minor high-sticking with blood drawn call. It was like Gary Bettman had given orders to make sure Penguins (and diving Crosby) get through quickly. Complete joke.
Well, now I can only hope that either Wings or Stars win it, although I have no particular like for either and that penguins don`t win it.

I hear you Garry.
My order is if not Stars then Philly, and if not Philly then Detroit. Penguins is not a possibility for me.

Few words about IIHF tournament in Canada.
Seems that the host team Canada is way strongest overall. First pick for gold. Russia has also highly skilled team but unfortunately they lay on one mediocore goalie now. I guess their hockey goverment is doing everything to get Nabokov to the games. Chech always dangerous as well as USA.
We have a very good team in together, especially when Saku Koivu is joining in couple of days. But still we managed to give Norway one point  Germany made first surprise by winning Slovakia, even they don't have their highest level players in. Should Finns win Slovakia and Norway wins Germany, Slovakia is out

Why do you not like penguins? After all, all those teams have finnish players playing for them, although one has to admit that Ruutu is a dick.

Finland vs Norway was a shocking game almost. After the first 3-4 minutes I expected it to be 6:0, because finns were so dominant.
Russians have gotten Nabokov, also Tyutin from rangers and Markov from habs. They are dangerous as always (How could you not be dangerous with Ovechkin and Kovalchuk playing for you?), but I still have some doubts.
With Saku joining Finland, they will be better, but I have some doubts about your goalies this time.
Canada will obviously be very hard to beat.
Yes, our guys did not prepaire them self well against Norway, Russia looks stronger now if they got Nabokov, but the disiplin always has been a problem for them. I agree Canada is clear favorite. Our strenght has always been good coaching and not too many "big stars", I hope that will take our team to the medal games this year too.
Been enjoying to watch proper hockey now again.

swedish papers believ "Tre Kronor" is worse than for a long time this year. Beating France with 9-0 didn´t make anything better since France had a decent first period.
Wow BTW! i just posted in tha icehockey thread :D

I meant to watch the game and go to bed as soon as the outcome was clear, but no, they managed to draw it to overtime and I got to bed after 1 am. :(
At least they made the third goal quite quickly.
The worst part by far is Tamminen, again, his method of learning a new word every year and repeating it endlessly is rather tiresome. You could even say there isn't enough variation in his analysis. :)

Ruutu being a dick is the only positivie thing in the team ;) :p :
I said it earlier, the junior pair Crosby/Malkin, them being so good at so early on their career... It's just my bitter envy. Should they win it's too much too soon.

Why is so many Swedes refusing to come and play for their country?
I think it is part economical issues and part nationalistic; swedes in common are not that very patriotic. There have been discussions reharding players reluctance when it comes to playing in tre Kronor. Spoiled brats and other comments have been throwed around...

Ahaa, I was just thinking if they have some problem with the coach or something, there is so many Swedes this year that refuse, it almost looks like it could be somekind of protest.

An interesting question which I'd also like to know.
I dont think they actually was trying to get him "little Kiprusoff" too hard, he got quite hard critic when he refused last time.

I usually like the canadian team, but yesterday I was 100% behind USA. They really deserved to win.
Finns must be happy today, Swedes getting beaten by the Swiss team :D
Just as I wrote that, some swede did a very dirty move on a swiss player, stupid idiot.
Saku and Selänne on the same line together should be awesome

Not the best game yesterday from the Finnish team, Bäckströmberger seems to spit out the pucks back to the best goal making area and defense men make some silly passes. 1.st forward lineup needs a kick in the backside as well.

Not a good tournament for Slovaks either. Thanks to similar reasons than Team Sweden, Slovakia is out of top 12.
Well Great Britain came 4th in our Division 1 group again.
The highlight being an 8-1 victory over Netherlands.
Although our position has stayed the same our performances were much better and I genuninley feel that in 5-6 years we could get promoted to the main cahmpionship.
