Apparently Subaru will enter the IRC with their new BRZ. Which has got me interested - since the BRZ is essentially the same car as the Toyota GT86, the GT86 must also be elegible to enter the IRC. But because they're so very similar (and because so much has been made of this), it makes very little sense for both cars to be entered in the IRC. So I'm wondering if we could see the GT86 entered into the WRC (if possible under WRC regulations), or at least the SWRC. It would be in Toyota's interests, since they were good at rallying and their motorsport project needs a bit of a boost after the disaster that was their Formula 1 programme. I doubt it will happen, but those cars look damn good. I would not be upset to see them in the WRC in some form.

I spotted the link about Subaru bringing some tuned versions to the Tokyo Auto Salon. I will be there photographing so anything that comes along will be sure to throw it up on the forums here. I hope there is some substance to the claims.

honestly, i don´t think that duval don´t likes to drive. but probably he just can´t, because no one will give him some money...and now there´s neuville, so no need for an older belgian driver who´s known as a crash kid and unfriendly guy. anyhow, i always liked duval and his maximum attack driving style. but neuville even seems to be more crazy without crashing so often ;)

So we are comparing an 8 time world champ against a rookie who has only seen a few WRC events in a JWRC car and who won't have a single pace note that means anything.
If we are looking for comparisons - how will he compare against Ott and will he outpace Matthew Wilson from the very first.
His progress has been startling, and yes I know it is IRC but no dummy ever won the Tour de Corse in whatever series it was held

No, you'd expect Boonen or Gilbert to get all top brands....

I truly believe that Thierry is destined for great things - he just needs plenty of experience, particularly on gravel....give him time.

On the other hand it's the first time in a looong period we have a young Belgian guy in the WRC. For marketing Duval shouldn't be an example...

If you could put sponsorship on the bottom of a car marketing wouldnt be a problem for Duval, it wouldnt take him long to show it ;)

Meanwhile both 207's from Peugeot Portugal were sold to Italy.

There's no ban on alcohol in motorsport ... McLaren ran Johnnie Walker as a sponsor this year and Force India ran with Whyte & Mackay whisky this year.

There is such a social stigma attached to tobacco branding that no team would accept money from a cigarette company, even if there were no laws or bans.

Not sure (some teams anyway) any stigma for a cash starved sport like WRC especially outside Europe and North America. You really think a team would refuse 2 or 3 or 5 million? Ask Papa Wilson.
As said Ferrari are Marlboro sponsored and just extended it to 2015 along with Ducati.

Ferrari are the only team that really accepts money from a tobacco company. They cover it up with the barcode design, but that doesn't exactly to much for them - everyone knows the barcode means "Marlboro". They supposedly removed the Marlboro barcode from the car, dropped the company from their team name (they're now "Scuderia Ferrari" instead of "Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro") and introduced a new team logo, but the team logo looks suspiciously like the new Marlboro packets ...

Brynildsen just said no budget for SWRC, I was hoping he was 1 extra entrant....

There is a growing issue with tobacco in the old Western world, but there are more smokers in China alone than there are people living in Western Europe and US combined. Last year there were an estimated 600 million smokers in China (Source: CNBC)

It's still good business (just check the stock prices on tobacco companies). The cigaret combanies biggest problems are counter fitting where classic brands are copied and filled with crap tobacco and sold cheaply all over the world.

Correct - restrictions are country specific. Finland for example bans alcohol advertising above a certain % content, UK does not. We ran Carib Beer advertising on our car on Wales Rally GB 06.

An awesome line-up behind the initiative, including Bjorn Waldegard, Stig Blomqvist, Thomas Rådström, Jan Pettersson, Leif Asterhag and Staffan Parmander

There will be an exciting start to the year 2012 Swedish Rally, despite the dreary winter weather here around the Mälardalen region.
A long-awaited press releases by e-mail came from Sweden World Rally Team.
In the mail, you can read:
"- 1979, Bjorn Waldegard the first World Champions. Five years later it was again time for a Swedish to step onto the throne when Stig Blomqvist drove home the World Championship title.

- Rally was red hot and is one of the great popular sports in Sweden. The money flowed and re-growth flourished. But then something happened. While the sport was growing more and more international, they were Swedish talent increasingly difficult to deliver. Talent there, but they never got the chance. Until now.

- Sweden World Rally Team is a joint effort by some of the biggest rally profiles of all time. Together, they have hundreds of World Cup starts, delsegrar and World Cup titles in track list. And a tremendous skill.

-Sweden World Rally Team is an elite investment that gives a Swedish drivers the chance to compete in the WRC class already in 2012. "

Monday, January 9 is Sweden World Rally Team press conference and it will be interesting to see what, or what, drivers will be matched up.




The rumor says that it's Patrik Sandell to drive a Mini in Sweden Championship and some WRC events.

Great news with Sweden WRT. If it's MINI they chose I expect it to be run by Grifone. They seem - together with Motorsport Italia - to be the team that now has experience running the MINI WRC car.

He wasn't Peugeot Polska official driver in last two years (before yes). Those were Kuchar (2010) and Grzyb (2011). Bouffier was using private car with Polish sponsors.

Absolutely and it also does apply to all forum 'certified accountants' who claim Citroën and Ford spent/d a hell of a lot of money for peanuts.

It's interesting. Especially when he says: "Many things have become more clear to me as well, why we have before maybe has been slower in some areas". Maybe he is saying that the DS3 is a better car than the Fiesta, especially on the asphalt.

I was little nervous. I had managed to create a good atmoshere at M-Sport and I knew exactly how everything works, Mikko says.

On the other hand I was interested in the challenge, Citroen has always been a very strong team. It has often been a sense, if I had sometimes a chance to drive the Citroen, and to see is Citroen so different.

Do you have exact info about the budget from Prodrive and M-Sport? If yes, please post them on the forum. If no, please stop talking about things you don't know anything about.

The only figures I’ve seen when there was a programme series called “Engineering the World rally” on Discovery. Discovery made a 6 part programme of Prodrive that year when they struggled with the “snake” problem (I can’t recall the year).

In rally GB they compared budgets, staff etc. with a young British driver Kevin Davies driving a Fiesta ST 150.

The result of the comparison was:

Price tag = 35 500 € for the Fiesta vs. 600 000 € for the Subaru
Staff = 8 part time volunteers for the Fiesta team vs. 170 full time professionals for Subaru (Prodrive)
Budget = 50 000 € for the Fiesta team vs. 50 000 000 € for Subaru (Prodrive)

This sounds a bit specific because it was ten times bigger than Kevin's budget.

He said he signed a deal for this year with VW a few days ago and that the focus will be on the testing with the Polo WRC and that he will do some rallies in the Skoda Fabia S2000. But he sad nothing about how much testing (like hours or something). He did not sad anything about other years, he has to prove himself this year.

according to Portuguese media. FIA has offered Prodrive a deal to registr as M1 to allow M2 teams to register ( Nobre and Araujo). They have to do minimum 7 (2 outside Europe) and be cut on test days. Ford and Citroen have also to acccept this deal.

Well, the level of TV production for the Power Stage is WAY better than IRC. Graphics more accurate (and less invasive), more roadside cameras (IRC got just heli and onboards, except stop-line and "camera finish"... quite poor), etc...

The only thing I hope is this will be good for the sport in the future.

Of course I feel very sorry for all the people at North One Sport who just lost their job (I guess) and all of their hard work has been for nothing. On the other hand, NOS has had it's chance and they didn't fully live up to it. But if we believe the stories about NOS recently about their hard work and their willingness to improve the coverage, both on TV and online, then I'm curious to see what they would have come up with. Their livestream on Rallye de France last year was good and promosing. It remains to be seen whether Eurosport can do something similar.

What would have been better, NOS or Eurosport? We will never know, but judging by facts and things we know, I tend to say Eurosport will be better. Their IRC coverage is quite good. I'm VERY curious to see what will happen with the IRC now though!

On a sidenote, one special thing I'm worried about is WRC onboards - AFAIK North One Sport has a huge database of them (all from atleast 2001 onwards) and I would hate to see them ending up to trash. It would be a rally-cultural genocide.

The stuff that Eurosport has shown live looks great from the heli, if the landscape is stunning. BUT you have to consider the fact that not everyone who follows rallying isn't a rally nutter. Damn, I'm sure that a considerable amount of F1 fanatics would prefer to watch the races with natural sound only. But that doesn't appeal to the more general audience.

If a production company would do what the die hard fans want, then they will kill the sport because only the small number of fanatics will watch it. Television has one really simple principle when it comes to producing things - keep it simple and stupid.

I'm really skeptical about Eurosport producing WRC footage. I hope that they will prove me wrong.

I tend to agree with you about the IRC review programmes. The quality of the footage is ok but the commentary tends to be done on the hoof and can be a bit of a mess.

However I think that is almost irrelevant in terms of bringing new fans to the sport. Live coverage is the only way to do that. Review programmes are boring, full stop. Even if you try to pretend the action is live with pathetic voice overs a la Paul King/North One.

It remains to be seen what Eurosport will offer in terms of live footage in the future but if they can do more extensive live stuff like Monte has been for the last two years, and perhaps even sell it to other broadcasters too then I think it would make the sport hugely more attractive to fans, and therefore manufacturers and sponsors too.

I agree that the Paul King "live action" voice overs weren't the best but in the end they weren't so bad as they were in the beginning.

Another thing that I read from quite many posts on the forums now is that everyone is happy because with Eurosport there is a bigger chance to see more hours of rallying on the telly. But that's only increase in quantity, not in quality. As I wrote earlier, the Eurosport rally programmes (reviews and live broadcasts) lack the premium quality that is quite a must nowadays. You can't substitute quality with quantity.

North One Sport may have been ****ty salesmen but at least what they produced had more quality than Eurosport's IRC.

But as I said earlier, I hope they prove me wrong. (I'm just very critical about television and even more critical when it has to do with my favourite sport)

well no need to go elsewhere...they could create their own organizing and legislation committee and organise ONLY rally events and the like (Hillclimbs, Rallycross ects) and then fat dwarfs like jean-todt would only have to care about the ladyboys they call drivers in F1 and their fat paychecks along with the overweight fans sitting on the stands with stupid red/yelow caps and flags.

If you would put, e.g. Rally Finland 2011 coverage and no matter what IRC 2011 round coverage side by side, no one would say that. IRC reviews are weaker than WRC ones. (And please don't ask me to make a analysis for you because it will change how you watch rally reviews. I'm pretty sure you don't want that.)

The stuff that Eurosport has shown live looks great from the heli, if the landscape is stunning. BUT you have to consider the fact that not everyone who follows rallying isn't a rally nutter. Damn, I'm sure that a considerable amount of F1 fanatics would prefer to watch the races with natural sound only. But that doesn't appeal to the more general audience.

If a production company would do what the die hard fans want, then they will kill the sport because only the small number of fanatics will watch it. Television has one really simple principle when it comes to producing things - keep it simple and stupid.

I'm really skeptical about Eurosport producing WRC footage. I hope that they will prove me wrong.

I disagree to an amount. Martin Brundle and David Coulthard proved the skeptics, they mentioned very technical details about the races and still manage it make it one of the most fun season of F1 coverage I've ever watched (minus the DRS). Julian Porter makes a good Martin Brundle, but they need a leading charismatic commentator. The current IRC reviewer guy mumbles too much and takes away from the reviews.

All of WRC reviews are so boring for the last 10 years, you can't blame them having only less than half a day of return period to put the show live. If they only put up reviews like that and only in paid cable channels, then it is a doomed plan. I think Power Stage has good reception. They are introducing a qualifying system this year, guess how popular F1 qualifying is (extremely), I don't see the public complaining that its too complex. So those Shakedown and PowerStage already will give a decent live materials. They should work out a limited amount of live coverage, then spend an extra day to work on a more polished one full hour review. I understand hardcore rally fans might not even like qualifying or powerstage (heck rallies these days are already short as it is with re-run stages), but its a much more interesting than a boring dumb downed review with a single politically correct commentator without attitudes.

It's worth a try, whatever it is, it probably can't be worse than what we already have.

MTV3 MAX had fabulous coverage back in 2007. Every day had one hour review which was roughly 50 mins of WRC and 10 minutes of other classes. Every day there was also a 30-minute incar special. Then there were small studio parts with Tomi Tuominen, mainly before and after the event. Studio segments included visitors. Unfortunately it lasted only for one season like this... Nowdays I'd give it a 8- on a scale from 1 to 10.

Well, these men, as well as Mr Bernie, has no competition, except for election every four or five year or so. They can manipulate as much as they want and do nothing or visit hor-houses. What can we do as every man? Nothing I suppose.
WRC should have had Ari V instead of Mr Todt. Maybe that would have been better.

Prodrive told staff several weeks ago that they are going to leave these buildings anyway and are moving everything under one roof in a single building close to the existing site (old Hella factory?).

Αt Acropolis like rallies the handicap will be bigger due to more demanding gravel.In mud is less handicap a not top tyre.Also don t forget that dmack had a special tyre for this surface at Wales.

Yes they are in a lot of trouble right now. Actually the Chrysler brand is the most succesfull brand in the FIAT group right now ... sort of says it all ... and also confirms that there is no chance in hell that Abarth is going to do WRC any time soon.

TMR is not going to stop it´s operation, but will move to the old premises beside the Makinen farm in Puuppola.
