Bad news for Blackpool. And they can tear down the Millenium Dome now too.

Why this should be such a flagship policy for the Government, I have absolutely no idea.

Don't know what all the fuss is about, just about every city in the country already has a "normal" casino, and if you're that desparate to loose your cash just go on line, or send it to me!

The Domes been snapped by a consortium that is decking it out for live gigs and exhibitions.

They were going to invest a 2nd tranche of money if they got the Casino but probably wont now.

As Ben says, why do we need this "Flagship" policy anyway? Why is Tessa Jowell ramming this down our throats and what is the thinking behind it?

Really cannot see this one.

What's that rumbling sound?
Oh don't worry it's just Kier Hardie, Aneurin Bevan and other Labour Party pioneers spinning in their graves at New Labours latest gift to the working classes.

Now it's of supreme indifference to me where they stick this monstrosity but I should imagine it will have an effect on a number of households where the housekeeping dosh has been squandered on the turn of a card or a revolution of the roulette wheel.
Before anyone says "Oh it's a lovely night out and as long as you keep to an affordable limit it's harmless enough"
Listen the only reason places like this flourish is because their entire raison d'etre is to separate mugs from their hard earned folding in as short a time as possible.

Now I like a bet as much as the next man but do me a favour. Online poker, late night TV "quiz games", scratch cards, Lotto, Super Casinos et al.

Great Britain = Las Vegas gin palace FACT.

This is the biggest non-story since Jade, Jackieyyeyeie and Jo mistook their initials for the KKK last week.

As has been said, most places have a casino anyway. All this announcement does is provide for one more - a big one obviously - but is hardly earth-shattering news.

Of course, a cynic would say that the extra tax raised by all those Mancunians gambling away their benefit will end up being used to top up the struggling 2012 Olympic funds, but I couldn't possibly comment...

didn't New Labour have their party conference in manchester back in September?

The gambling industry is on the rise. Unlimited jackpot "one armed bandits" will make light work of a weekly pay packet.

I used to work in a bingo hall, I know how addictive gambling is by the weight of the box containing all the 10p coins.

Whenever an activity is banned for dangerousness, the safety nazis all say that the ban will have been worth it if it saves just one life. Now here is a massive gambling palace in Manchester, and I say it is worth banning if it saves just one person from addiction and financial ruin. And it would surely do that.

Clearly the nation is in desperate need for one of these things

Like you I have no idea where the idea has come from, why the govt has embraced it so enthusiastically, or why they are so keen to sell it to the British public.

I do know the bookies would have made lots of money on which city was going to be "awarded the honour" so the gambling industry wins all round

I think that there's more creativeways of generating revenue than hoovering up the bank accounts & equity of locals & tourists.

in other news, Lord Cashpoint was arrested yesterday.

I don't get it, are they only allowing 1 super casino in all of the UK?
