View Full Version : Who's not going to make the chase?

I personally don't think Clint Boyer is going to make the chase even though he's only in 13th place. The way the top 12 guys are racing he's going to have to step up his game.

He's finished outside the top 20 in 3 out of the last 6 races. Someone who's finishing outside the top 10 this late in the season doesn't deserve to make the chase.

Who else do you think won't make the chase. Kenseth is cutting it close... but I think most of the other drivers close to the bubble will make it. Kevin Harvick has been running well lately so hopefully he keeps it up.

With 4 races to go to the chase & the next Cup race @ Michigan ...

I think the top 12 in the Chase has already been set, so I will go with :
Kyle Busch (has 8 wins already with consistant top 5s & top 10s, he will be hard to beat)
(Kyle Busch is my pick to be the 2008 Cup Champion)
Carl Edwards (with 4 wins so far & getting back on track, he will be a strong contender)
Jimmie Johnson (will probably be a strong contender)
Dale Earnhardt Jr (has done very well but I think he will fall behind team-mates Gordon & Johnson)
Jeff Burton (a true hard charger but RCR will let him down)
Jeff Gordon (will probably be an extremely strong contender)
Tony Stewart (will probably be an extremely strong contender)
Kasey Kahne (Ray Evernham seems to be getting back to racing, Kahne is the dark horse to win it all)
Denny Hamlin (will probably be a strong contender but will fall short)
Greg Biffle (does seem back on track but I expect him to have a couple of bad races in the Chase)
Kevin Harvick (running hot & cold will NOT earn him the championship)
Matt Kenseth (I expect him to really surge from here on, he will probably be a strong contender)

My picks to NOT make the Chase are :
Clint Bowyer* (could make it but doubtful)
David Ragan (could make it but doubtful)
*(Normally Clint Bowyer would likely be in but he seems to be snakebit with bad luck this season.
IMO if Clint Bowyer does make it in, it will likely be at the cost of bumping team-mate Kevin Harvick out.) :s

These drivers are mathimatically possible but are all but eliminated :
Ryan Newman
Martin Truex Jr
Brian Vickers
Kurt Busch
Jamie McMurray
Elliott Sadler
Bobby Labonte
Juan Montoya
Travis Kvapil
Casey Mears

David Gilliland in 25th & on back ARE mathimatically ELIMINATED

Kevin Harvick (running hot & cold will NOT earn him the championship)

running hot or cold :mark: if not for some acouple incidents and bad luck, he'd be way up in the standings right now.

Top 3 car at Sonoma before wheel-hopping, top 3 at NHIS before pitstops and rain, top 5 car at Indy before Kurt spun and collected Harv, top 5 at Daytona before being shuffled out, top 5 at Michigan before caution forced to pit.

the 29 team has been on, and they will be a force in the chase

I think it will probably end with the 12 that are in now. It looks like it will be Roush vs RCR cars. Right now Roush seems stronger, and better able to make adjustments during the races. If Edwards or Biffle are running hot then the rest of the Roush cars seem to migrate to the top 10 by the end of the race. That doesn't seem to happen with the Childress teams.

Kasey Kahne had engine failure which dropped him down to 11th overall. ()hat hurt

Jeff Gordon finished 42nd which dropped him in the overall points from 6th place down to 9th place. (That hurt even more)

Hamlin moved down 3 positions and is now sitting on the bubble.

There was a lot of movement in the overall standings…

Will make the chase

I don't see Harvick making it

By the way... HARVICK moved up three positions overall in the chase. It's looking better and better for him.

Race 24 @ Bristol dropped Kasey Khane out & Clint Bowyer in ...

Race 25 @ California saw some movement but the top 12 stayed the same :
LOCKED into the Chase after California
01. Kyle Busch
02. Carl Edwards
03. Jimmie Johnson +1
04. Dale Earnhardt Jr -1
05. Jeff Burton

IN the Chase for now but NOT Locked-In
06. Greg Biffle +1
07. Kevin Harvick +1
08. Tony Stewart -2
09. Matt Kenseth +1
10. Jeff Gordon -1
11. Denny Hamlin
12. Clint Bowyer

Currently OUT of the Chase but NOT Mathematically Eliminated
13. David Ragan –17 points behind 12th
14. Kasey Kahne –48 points behind 12th

(15th on back are Mathematically Eliminated from making the Chase)

on to Richmond with some good drivers on the outside looking in ... :s

Has anybody seen the scenarios for where the guys not locked in the chase have to finish at Richmond? Other than the Biff & Happy just having to start the race, I haven't seen or heard anything else yet.

01—Kyle Busch, clinched at Michigan
02—Carl Edwards, clinched at Bristol
03—Jimmie Johnson, clinched at California
04—Dale Earnhardt Jr, clinched at California
05—Jeff Burton, clinched at California
06—Greg Biffle, only needs to start Richmond
07—Kevin Harvick, needs to finish 42nd or better @ Richmond
08—Tony Stewart, needs to finish 35th or better @ Richmond
09—Matt Kenseth, needs to finish 25th or better @ Richmond
10—Jeff Gordon, needs to finish 23rd or better @ Richmond
11—Denny Hamlin, needs to finish 20th or better @ Richmond
12—Clint Bowyer, needs to finish ahead of both Kahne & Ragan @ Richmond

Clint Bowyer is 12th, 17 points ahead of David Ragan and 48 points ahead of Kasey Kahne
Ragan clinches if he wins and leads the most laps even if Bowyer finishes 2nd (but doesn't lead a lap)
Kahne needs to finish 49 points ahead of Bowyer and 32 points ahead of Ragan to clinch a spot

I kind of would like to see Ragan make it. The kid is definitely most improved he wrecked 22 times last year and look at him now.
