It looks like the dominoes are starting to keel over. The next few weeks should be very interesting.

Ryan Newman will leave Penske Racing and its No. 12 Dodges after the 2008 Sprint Cup season, the team announced Monday.

Newman is widely believed to be heading for Stewart-Haas Racing to join Tony Stewart for 2009. Stewart will have 50 percent ownership in what is now Haas CNC Racing next year and is leaving Joe Gibbs Racing to drive there.

"We want to thank Ryan for his hard work and contributions to Penske Racing over the past nine years,” said Roger Penske, owner of Penske Racing. “We wish Ryan all the best for the future and we’ll continue to focus our efforts on making the Chase with Ryan and the Alltel Dodge team this season.”

Newman won this year's Daytona 500 for his 13th career Sprint Cup victory. He is 16th in the Cup standings through 19 races. Newman has made all 243 of his career Cup starts in Penske-owned cars.

“I appreciate Penske Racing and all they have done for me, but more importantly, I appreciate their friendship and what they have done for my career," said Newman, 30. "I would also like to thank all of the sponsors, especially Alltel, who have supported me."

Penske Racing said a new driver for the No. 12 will be announced "in the near future." Sources say David Stremme is one of the drivers being looked at to replace Newman in that ride.

David Stremme, Casey Mears and Martin Truex seem to be leading candidates to take over the #12

"Newman said he has two other options other than Stewart's team and staying with Penske,
and in one of those instances an ownership share has been discussed.
He added that nothing has been decided, and he has set no deadline by which he has to make a decision."

Old info from over two weeks ago. Newman said over weekend he was down to two choices. Stewart also said his pick for driver was waiting on six signatures before it coud be announced.
Most likely Newman going to #4 Stewart-Haas waiting sponsor ok, with #33 RCR backup for Newman.

Newman not going to the #20 car: Strike Joe Gibbs Racing from the list of potential employers for Ryan Newman.
Newman's name has been most prominently mentioned to land with Stewart-Haas Racing next season.
Sources close to the situation said he also has had discussions with JGR, Richard Childress Racing and Gillett Evernham Motorsports.
An RCR official said on Friday that he expected Newman to go to Stewart ..........

A source close to Penske Racing said "a verbal agreement in this sport doesn't mean anything."

http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g202/gr8link/sign/think/imo.jpg in this day & time, a contract doesn't mean much either ...
it used to be a driver's word was all that was needed ...
years ago men stuck to their word & honored their contracts ...
but now a driver's word means nothing to most of the drivers ...
team owners also sign drivers but sometimes let them go BEFORE the driver's time is up ...
I miss the days when the drivers & team owners stood by what they said. :s

From Jayskis.com

Newman's 2009 plans to be announced Friday?: #12-Ryan Newman will be introduced as the second driver at Stewart-Haas Racing on Friday at Michigan International Speedway, a source close to the situation told ESPN.com on Wednesday. Newman reached a verbal agreement with Tony Stewart a few weeks ago, but details about his sponsor and other contractual details had to be ironed out before the deal could be officially announced. Stewart, who recently took over 50% of Haas CNC Racing, will drive the #14 sponsored by Office Depot and Old Spice. Newman will drive the #4, with Burger King, U.S. Army and UPS being mentioned as potential sponsors. Newman also was pursued by Evernham Motorsports, Richard Childress Racing and Petty Enterprises after announcing he would not return to Penske Racing next season. Newman will be reunited with Matt Borland, now the competition director at Stewart-Haas. Borland was Newman's crew chief at Penske for 12 of his 13 Cup victories. Attempts to reach Newman and Stewart were unsuccessful.(ESPN.com)(8-13-2008)

Awesome news! Congrats to Newman, Tony & Stewart-Haas Racing. Seems like they're really serious about building up a solid team! *fingers crossed* for 2009!

Just speculation, but I don't see Tony or Ryan winning a race or making the chase for at least 2-3 years if ever. Tony doesn't seem to have the right temperment to compete with the likes of Hendrick, Roush, Childress, Everham or Penske. Road courses may be their best hope.

I supect that Hendrick MotorSports will be selling Stewart/Haas 2 fleets of chassis/body combos ...
I also supect Hendrick will lease them engines, if so Stewart & Newman could be real contenders.

I think it's past "suspect" point and already been announced.

I thought I would put this article here as it has something to do with Penske Racing and the #12 team.

Seems like an interesting driver lineup at Penske next year.

With the addition of David Stremme to the #12 car, Roger Penske better stock up on sheet metal, steel bars, etc ...
Penske should also build a big bunch of extra #12 cars for 2009 as they won't last long ...
