I have just indulged myself with a trip to watch the golf at Wentworth.Being over 60 it cost me just £10, the grandstands were free as were the programmes. This is obviously something that will never catch on in motorsport.

Went to Le Mans Classic 2 years back and grandstands were free. Likewise Angouleme and a few other places. Problem is that they fill up about 2 hours before anything starts, are uncomfortable and you can't leave your seat.

Probably costs more to run a motorsport event anyway as insurance for being hit by a golf ball probably ain't the same as being hit by a car, likewise problems with locals etc.

I think a nominal charge is the best thing. You want to have a system whereby the number of people admitted to the grandstand does not exceed its capacity, so you can leave and return and be sure of a seat. But on the other hand you don't want people taking a ticket when they aren't bothered about sitting there, hence the charge.
