Great news. It will be interesting to see how he goes, though, I think he will struggle a bit at the Indie round, but should hold his own at Laguna.

It will certainly be an acid test for him. I have my doubts about him heading straight to MotoGP but time will tell I guess.
Also in wildcard news, Roger Lee Hayden is set to repeat his ride aboard the Kwak again but only if he can overcome his recently sustained injuries. I think he has a busted hip and back and had his pinky finger amputated. Ouch! If he can't come up in time then Chaz Davies will get his chance as a wildcard again.

Suzuki need to rush through their next contendor because Chris V is making threatening noises about what he might do if they dont come up with a race winning machine.

I reckon chasing Bautista or Pasini would be where I would focus my attentions in that regard. Spies looks ok but the AMA is a 2-horse race between himself and Mladin and Matt won a lot more races than Ben did last year. I would prefer to see Spies alongside Neukirchner in WSB, replacing Kagayama and giving WSB a much needed American rider in the series.

that would be a sweet livery, if he uses it.

Spies will also be the Suzuki rider for the Indy tyre test so he will have a better knowledge of the track than the rest. Doing well will greatly increase his chances of a GP ride next season

Ducati confirm Ben Spies approach

By Matthew Birt

Ducati have confirmed they have received a tentative approach from reigning American superbike champion Ben Spies about a 2009 MotoGP ride.

Factory team boss Livio Suppo confirmed to MCN that Spies’ manager Doug Gonda had been in contact to enquire about the possibility of a ride.

Spies is desperate to move to MotoGP next season but is still to find out whether he will do so with Suzuki as talks over the Japanese factory running a third bike appear nowhere nearer to being resolved.

Spies is obviously wanting to keep his options open in case Suzuki doesn’t have a place for him and recent contact was made with Ducati.

With reigning world champion Casey Stoner and Italian Marco Melandri already contracted to Ducati’s factory team in 2009, Spies might have to settle for a ride in the Alice-backed satellite squad.

Spies will certainly figure on a list of candidates for the satellite team, according to Suppo, who told MCN: “I know his manager and sometimes we speak and he told me that Ben was looking for a ride but I told him that we have two riders already for next year.

“The satellite team riders we make a list that Ducati and the team likes and then the team does the negotiation. So from our side Ben would be on the list because he is an interesting rider.”

Ben Spies to replace Loris Capirossi in Donington MotoGP

By Matthew Birt

Reigning American superbike champion Ben Spies will make his long-anticipated MotoGP debut in the British GP at Donington Park on June 22.

Suzuki is expected to officially announce the deal later this week, but Spies will replace Capirossi, with MCN sources today confirming the 35-year-old would definitely miss the British GP.

The veteran Italian had further medical checks on the broken right hand today that he injured during last Sunday's Catalunya GP when Honda rookie Alex de Angelis wiped him out.

Suzuki had expected to confirm Japanese test rider Nobuatsu Aoki for Capirossi's factory GSV-R ride. In Aoki's testing contract, it says he is the number one replacement should Capirossi or Chris Vermeulen get injured, and he is already in Europe having tested at Catalunya on earlier this week.

But with Spies due to make his MotoGP debut in Laguna Seca next month, Suzuki believe it is an ideal opportunity to draft him in earlier.
Spies' next GSV-R appearance was supposed to be a tyre test session at the Indianapolis circuit on July 1, which is just under three weeks before Laguna Seca.

He will now fly to Europe to race at Donington Park, and he is also on standby for the Dutch GP at Assen on June 28. Capirossi though is understood to have told team boss Paul Denning that he will be fit to return to action in Holland.

The British GP chance is a great opportunity for Spies to put himself in the shop window for a permanent rider in 2009. He is desperate to switch, but his hopes of moving with Suzuki were deal a recent blow when Japanese bosses scrapped plans to run a third GSV-R next season.

Spies has approached Ducati about a ride and he has also been linked with the Tech 3 Yamaha team.

Why not give the ride to Tom Sykes. He knows the track and rides for the "same" team in BSB

Why didn't they give the ride to somebody who knows the track? Suzuki do make some strange decisions - no wonder why they and Kawasaki struggle.
