F1- Hamilton to make acting debut in Turkey
By GMM on May 7, 2008 - 6:43:20 PM

(GMM) Lewis Hamilton is set to make his acting debut in Istanbul this week, ahead of Sunday's local Turkish grand prix.

The British formula one driver will reportedly make a fully-costumed guest appearance on Thursday on the stage of 'Troya'; an historical theatre show by the Turkish folkdance troupe Anadolu Atesi.

Is it just me, or is LH indulging in unnecessary distractions at a monumentally pivotal point in the season, for both him and McLaren. I'm starting to wonder if he, like the protagonist in “Cool Hand Luke” is displaying the kind of behavior that the Captain (played by Strother Martin) of the work Farm he was incarcerated at described as, in his words, to Paul Newman (Luke)

"Boy! You gotta' get your mind right!"

Well after last year, Lewis clearly needed acting lessons so when he finishes 2nd to his team-mate he can act like he is happy, and when finishing 2nd behind his competitors (Ferrari) he can act disappointed.

I think Lewis could have multiple roles in Mike's Movie
He could play RB, FM, and JPM! :D

At least he's not in the pub.

This was nothing more than a PR "opportunity", the kind of which teams and drivers take part in at every GP weekend. Rather than being a "fully-costumed" appearance Hamilton was there in his Vodaphone McLaren Mercedes overalls.

And he's spun his pizza though 180°!

Was Damon Hill appearing in "unnecessary distractions" in 1996? Perhaps if he wasn't making frivolous commercials then he would have won more than a single world championship. :D

If Fred did something this goofy, there would be six pages of bash, and, criticism
from the "Hamiltonian's" for being such a shameless self promoter, and looking so foolish.
But Fred or Kimi wouldn't do something so silly. LH fans just take your meducine here.
It's understandable. Lewis is still a little wet behind the ears!
No "real" harm done. It's just plain funny!

This thing is nonsense, but I think the drivers should be given a break from all these sponsorship commitments. They should be left to concentrate on the driving. Especially at McLaren, who seem to care about their image more than their results on the track.

Lewis didn't actually enjoy his 'debut' and it wasn't exactly self-promotion.

Just another PR fiasco. Almost all drivers participate in this silly crap!

Have you seen the commercials with Alonso and Mutua Madrilena?

He's saying now he regrets doing it so, he obviously had a choice in the matter. I don't think he did anything terrible! all I'm saying is he admits he made a bad choice. In his own word he said it was bad for his image. Why? Because he chose or agreed, to do something that he now regrets. Why does he think it didn't help his cool persona? Because he looked silly, and thats funny!

Hamilton is still being managed by his father, Anthony, who has resisted suggestions that his son needs an agent or media consultant.

Lewis Hamilton's PR disaster on Thursday, when he found himself suspended on a trapeze wire in an Istanbul theatre at the behest of Vodafone, has underlined the importance of him having his own media consultant to protect him from such misadventures.

Had he been properly advised, the 23-year-old World Championship runner-up of last year would not have taken part in the stunt. But surprisingly, perhaps, Hamilton still has no one looking after his own interests.

Although Hamilton closely identifies with McLaren Mercedes, a team he has been associated with since the age of 13, there will always be occasions when his interests and needs are divergent from those of the team or any of their 32 sponsors and suppliers.

Hamilton is still being managed by his father, Anthony, who has resisted suggestions that his son needs an agent or media consultant.

So was it his father that arranged for him to make a fool of himself?

Maybe :)

Unless he's getting sick of butt-kissing Vodafone, Santander, etc. It would piss me off if I couldn't concentrate on my job and had to go to all those events.

The reviews in British newspapers made for uncomfortable reading for the five-times race winner.

In the pantheon of ridiculous publicity stunts, it may rate among the greatest," The Times had declared on Friday.

"Dressed in his logoed race driving suit, he looked less like a majestic Apollo than a cross between Peter Pan and an astronaut."

I know I should let this go. It's just so D@mned funny I can't help myself! :p :
If someone can come up with a more rediculous PR stunt by an F1 Driver of any caliber I'd love to hear it. I believe Hamilton has broken new ground, in the arena of the absurd! Only Pee Wee Herman could have made this performance funnier! ;)

In his defense however, I believe that he really is commited to his day job. Because if he wasn't, he may have contemplated how awkward a stunt he was being coerced into doing!

That's why these guys have public relations people, and professional personal managers!

C'est la vie

Your daily doage of humble pie

Oh dear! A major PR own goal if ever there was one
:rotflmao:
"It is one of those moments you can file under the 'what the hell did I do that for?' category, and simply consign it to memory.
:rotflmao:
As theatrical debuts go, Hamilton bombed

But Hamilton looked as out of place as a green, three-eyed alien that had just landed from Mars in the middle of Hyde Park.
:rotflmao:
Hopefully, despite the millions of pounds ploughed into McLaren by Vodafone, he will also have the courage to stand up to them and say the next time he feels something is not right.
