I guess the man who was ultimately responsible for Goodyear's undoing in this messy finish was Villeneuve himself. Had he not been canny enough to hit the brakes then the top half of the field would have streamed by the pace car and, had that happened, I'm fairly certain USAC would have given everybody a free pass. All I can say is thank God a Canadian was running second or I would have had to have been tranquilized.

What also stands out for me is the finish. I'm sure Luyendyk, a lap down, thought he was being real slick by pulling along side Villeneuve to get in the chequered flag shot but I think it showed a real lack of class.
