The ING Renault F1 Team recently decided to buy a 36 TFlops system consisting of 1024 sockets (Socket 1207+) for AMD quad-core Opteron processors, resulting in 4096 K10 cores being deployed. Overall, Renault acquired eight Racks, each with 128 Opteron processors and 4.4 TB memory. The Appro racks are connected via Infiniband and Ethernet Management fabrics, yielding in a bandwidth of 8 GB/s.

Computational fluid dynamics has been a key tool in F1 aerodynamics for years. Renault is in the news because they are installing their own. It wasn't that long ago that Ferrari was the only team to not go out house for this info.
CFD though very useful is only one aspect of aerodynamic developement. This fantasy league and it's standings is nonsense. and doesn't represent the the benifits gained by the respective teams operating their processors!

BMW's wind tunnel apparantly has the most powerful supercomputer. That would explain the delta horns on the nose and the 'heck wing'. Whether it will give them a race win is a different matter...

Actually, [adopts trainspotter like geeky voice] the supercomputer is seperate to the windtunnel. That is how BMW can manage with only one tunnel - as to how they will fare trying to maintain 2008 development, 2009 design etc, with just one tunnel, remains to be seen.
Currently, Williams have set one windtunnel aside now to concentrate solely on 2009 development.
