View Full Version : Ford is screwed

I wish Ford good luck with trying to sell their cars on the basis that they're actually decent cars but with advertising like this and the cars on balloons ad they might as well just shut up shop and sell their factories off by the brick.

Cool advertising stunt.

Extreeeeeeeemely lame/pointless advertising which you'll probably have forgotten in about 5 minutes unless like myself you're still pondering what if any mean it has.

Couldn't get the whole ad in as it's a 2 page spread and my scanner's only an A4 one but you get the idea....

As much as I hate to admit it Vauxhall has got it right with their "COME ON!!!!" ad campaign for the Corsa. It doesn't really say much about the car but there's a lady with a large chest and it's memorable for being a fun little ad.

Excuse me for being extremely naive, but which Manufacturer won the WRC in 2006-07? Wasn't it Ford? I can't remember seeing any adverts for their success. What is the point if you're not going to milk any success you have? Who said, " Win on Sunday, sell on Monday"? - H. Ford Esq
Ford have never been good promoting their Motorsport success, 1994 is an example - Ford powered Benetton wins drivers F1 Championship, and not a jot is said.

Daniel, The ads is fine, Ford or Mazda are fine. I suggest you to have a higher resolution scanner to get the better picture of it.

Or you would better to put the pic of the lady here.

It seems Ford is happy enough just competing and getting promotion from that. Which I think is yet another dumb idea.

On what basis are the ads fine?

This is the Corsa. Hardly the artiest or smartest ad but I can see why it's effective.

My scanner is fine. I just couldn't be bothered mucking around with settings to get a scan as that was one fine enough.

Reading the paper today, there was a page ad for Peugeot winning the Catalunya Le Mans series race;

Peugeot 1
Audi 0

Advertising their Diesel engine, similar technology is in their road car Diesel engines.

Alright, I didn't find harmony on the backside of the car. They might need to chose the better model for the ads. :)

This is simply Daniel not understanding advertising.

He claims not to get the Ford ad, but seems to think that if he gets the Corsa with the bike rack it will help him pick up large breasted women riding bikes.

The Ford ad is very simple, puts across a message, and doesn't risk the female auto buyers being turned off by a sexist ad that will only appeal to buyers lacking a sense of reality.

Daniel

what message does it put across? every person that i've shown the ad to asks the same thing "what's it supposed to mean?"

Good advert

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SvfLhEhOTyk

Yet another clever advert
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3611lZBe-Uw

One of the most memorable adverts ever
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vyAUo_qkefA

Not my kind of advert but still it displays imagination. Which is more than can be said of the ad I posted at the start of this thread.

Here are a few good ads which Peugeot did during the Rugby World Cup. Nothing to do with the car really but extremely well focused at who was watching the adverts.

Perhaps if Ford had put that advert in Bungee Jumper Monthly then I could see a point to it! But they didn't. Even then they'd look stupid because the scenery in the background looks nothing like the scenery around Bloukrans which is the highest bungee jump in the world. The Ford ad just seems to somehow manage to be a bit obvious yet meaningless at the same time. If I hadn't seen the ad I would have though that wasn't possible.

At the end of the day an advert should display at least one or more of the following

Imagination - After all we want imagination from our cars manufacturer. No one wants to be seen as boring now do they?
Be memorable - Needs to be memorable so that the car/brand is in someone's head when they think of what car they're going to buy.
Humour - Means you don't just tune out like you do when the shouty man comes on to advertise double glazing :angryfire
Advertise the actual car or some feature of it - If you're looking for a car with 20 seats and the advertisement says it's got 20 then you'll find that interesting won't you?

If you don't understand the ad, it's pointless to discuss.

You can post a thousand links of ads you like. Chances are that if the Ford advertising teams did their homework, they reached the demographic they were aiming for. They don't spend huge budgets with monkeys, they do so with professionals in the field who show them a return on their advertising dollar.

Fair enough :)

I mean I get the ad. Basically they're trying to say that the Ford Focus ST is an extreme car or something. But the way they're doing it is just a bit poor and a bit obvious and not very effective.

If you want to see even better evidence of why Ford is screwed, look at the North American version of the Focus.

A quick scan of the balance sheet and income statement just solidifies things.

How can you not get this Ford ad? It's so obvious in your face!

You say you like the Opel advertisements and the Citroen transformer. Well, I always wondered who would enjoy such **** advertisements. Obviously we are not the same target demographic.

I see a lot of advertisements about Fords involvement in motorsports, even before their world titles. However I do not live in your country, so maybe Ford UK refuses motorsport.

Thing is you don't need to like the ads. They just need to be catchy and/or memorable and they've done their job.

Idon't know how true it is, but I believe there have been adverts in Europe advertising their WRC success - but none in UK!

Oh that one :p

Thing is most people aren't like me (thank god) and wouldn't have stared at the page for hours pondering what it was all supposed to mean. They would have turned the page and would have forgotten within a few seconds.

Who cares if it's crap, it got you to look at it, made you compelled to scan and post it here etc. You've just done the job Ford wanted you to do, talk about it.

It needn't matter anyway, considering Peugeot/Citroen is the be all and end all to you. Why should you care?

Listen. I don't know what your problem is. But get over Steve Irwin dying and the fact that I didn't like him as much as you and I agreed with Germaine Greer.

Lots of people scan/photograph things they don't like but find interesting for one reason or another. I simply scanned this because I thought it was a particularly bad waste of Ford's advertising budget :)

Out of all the Peugeot and Citroen models around today there are only 2 I'd buy so I'd hardly say they're the be all and end all to me....

And why bring that up? That has absolutely nothing to do with this whatsoever.

It has everything to do with the fact that you seem perpetually annoyed with me and feel that you need to argue every little point you can find to have an argument about.

I don't get Daniel, comparing a Ford print ad to TV-commercials. However, speaking about great car commercials:

It's not that bad, Jesus Christ calm down people.

Some people will think 'HELL YEAHHH FORD TAKING IT TO THE LIMIT' *rushes out to buy one* and some will moan about it on a forum. Either way, it's getting the job done.
