Whatever we call it, piano or keyboard, from what I know do not too much todays' or modern bands play this instrument. It could be symbol of music produced in 80-90s, although old music like Metallica never played it in their music, while todays' band solely rely on rhythm of guitars.

Not sure for Iron Maiden I think neither them play it. Personally once the song needed it, it could make the song more groovy, Van Hallen, GNR are example of band with massive use of piano.

It's not only piano. Hammond organ is a bloody good keyboard for rock'n'roll, too. And it's true in old days they tended to use it more, in 60-70s even more than in 80-90s. For instance look at Deep Purple. Just a Hammond and a guitar made them sound like an orchestra. But don't get too upset. These days bands like Muse are really good at using keyboard for textures. :)

Yes it does give a somewhat epic feel to a rock/metal song..the use of piano or keyboards and good use of it can make even a really heavy band sound great.,

Iron Maiden has used keyboards in some albums like Somewhere in Time and some of the newer songs ..especially Blood Brothers.

Muse is one of the rare. But I failed again trying on how can I enjoy their music.

I think the heyday of piano music came in the early 1900s, when apparently almost every home had one and music like Scott Joplin's Maple Leaf Rag was selling copies of sheet music by the cartloads. Once rock and roll came along I think the use of piano in popular music died out because it couldn't really compete with the electric guitars.

These days, how many people can read sheet music? With the rise of pop music with simple chords that can be picked out by ear, it's become less popular. Also guitar tab, though not useful for anyone but a guitarist, is also becoming more used. It seems like a throwback to medieval notation: you can't learn a piece from it without having heard a recording of it first to get the rhythm right and to get an idea of the feel of the music. The notation on Singstar strikes me that way, as well. Meh.

Evanescence uses piano in a bunch of their songs... and even known as the main instrument in "my immortal" and the first instrument you hear in "Bring me to Life (Wake Me Up Inside)"... Not what you'd expect from a Goth Rock band. I don't think piano's are gone from rock, but that they get drowned out over the electric guitars...

Well, one of my best friends from my younger days went to the Berklee College of Music in Boston who is a keyboard player is VERY quick to point out keyboards and piano's have NEVER left Rock n' Roll. Then again, he sells them for a living now so he has a vested interest.
