On the Chlustine codriver I've this name: Øehák... of course, I don't know if this is the right spelling or not.

Carles.
It sounds good now. I can confirm existence of such co-driver (Rehak - with that little chevron above the letter "R" which makes a difference while reading and a big one if computer changes it to "Ø") from Czechoslovakia in late 60's.
Many thanks Carles

And again many thanks to you Carles. Your presicions are precoius. Thou you didn't precise Komornicki - there is still P. Komornicki. I know for sure it was Krzysztof Komornicki/Błażej (Blazej - to be more readible) Krupa.
I see I have a big problem (many "blanks") concerning R.A.C.E. Rally of 70's, too. I'll specify them in a minute.

Janusz,

then, the right spelling is Øehák or Rehak?

Carles.
In my opinion the right form is Rehák (with that little chevron above the "R"). That's funny as in my post preview I can see that name in the right form and when I am in the Forum it is wrong "Øehák". (To be precise - as I am not sure if you see it the same way as I do - when on Forum that special "R" changes to that norwegian/danish slashed "O".

Thank you Carles for precising names I wrote. My intention was also to ask for those names I don't have in the results. Is it possible?
By the occasion Canellas and Zanini were often doing Rajd Polski in late 70's. There on the entry list they sometimes existed in the strange forms like:
In 1976 it was: Sans Zanini/Petisco Garay what later was known as Antonio Zanini/Juan José Petisco, Salvador G. Canellas/Daniel T. Ferrater; May you explain what it was with Zanini and Petisco and meannings of the extra initials in Canellas / de Ferrater names?

I'll try to explain the little mistery: the full name of Zanini is Antonio (first name) Zanini (father's family name) Sans (mother's family name). In Spain usually the people are known for his first name and the father's family name, but the full name (with the first and second family names) is used in all the official documents like the ID, the passport or the driving license. So, sometimes, if the person who type the drivers names in the entry lists don'y know the usual form (Antonio Zanini) can type also Zanini Sans or Antonio Zanini Sans.

The case of Petisco is the same, with Juan José as fist name.

On Salvador Cañellas, the G. must stand for his "second" first name, like José in the case of Juan José Petisco.

On Ferrater the T. must be the same: a "second" first name, like the french Jean-Pierre. In the case of Ferrater his father's family name is De Ferrater, like Van or Von in the Netherlands or Deutschland. So the correct spelling of Ferrater's name is Daniel de Ferrater.

Hope this helps,

Carles.

Jordi (in catalan) or Jorge (in spanish) are the same guy, while Víctor is his brother. Both are from Barcelona and in the case of Víctor there's no confusion 'cause both in catalan or spanish the name is spelled and sounds exactly.

The problem with the names in spanish or catalan comes from the 40 years of Franco's dictature 'cause the catalan was banned and all the catalan names in official documents were translated to spanish.

There are a lot of cases, in racing or rallying, like Joan (Juan) Fernández, Pere (Pedro) Nogués, Jordi (Jorge) Catón, Josep María (José María) Fernández -Joan's brother-, Josep María (José María) Servià -Salvador's brother-.

Well, I have 2 Mk2 Escorts for sale, one has done just as many International rallies! I would accept a tenth of the price!

On a serious note, can the forum operators please clarify the rules about what are really adverts on the site? - and perhaps remove advertising posts to a separate place?
I know we have no right to have this thread kept solely for historical rally results, just rally history, but a convention has built up over a very long time that it is for that purpose alone and I'm sure most of those using it regularly would prefer it to continue in that form. We have already had rallycross posts put into a separate thread.

And here's some 1978 world championship questions:

At San Remo, Vudafieri-Mannini & Bettega-Torghele works crews entered by Lancia Pirelli or...?

At Corsica, Vudafieri-Scabini works crew entered by Lancia Pirelli or...?
I believe Bettega-Vacchetto were a Lancia Pirelli works crew.

Also, does anyone know the entrant of Lancia Stratos of Blomqvist-Sylvan at Swedish, and of Darniche-Mahe at Portugal?

And finally (for now), what was the entrant of Porsches 911 of Waldegard-Thorszelius & Preston-Lyall at Safari, and what was Markku Alen driving on RAC, 131 or Stratos?

Thank you.

FAL
8th February 2007, 11:22
Alen was in Stratos for 78 RAC (and it was the year Rohrl's 131 had Geisdorfer sitting in the back!).
I think the Stratos had lost the 4 valve per cylinder heads by that year following changes to Appendix J. Alen persuaded Lancia to enter one again in 79 but that was a cobbled-together car (an ex-Darniche Chardonnay car?). He went well in both years but with 12 valves it was no longer capable of dominating.

Thanks FAL. I just don't understand how was it possible that Lancia Stratos was entered by Alitalia Fiat?

About the other questions, anybody?

jorge, what's going on with you? I need your help man! :(

FAL
8th February 2007, 17:02
Probably the same deal as with the Waldegard entry in 76. Fiat probably wanted Alen in a 131 and originally entered him in that. Fiat and Lancia were the same group by then and internal poilitics was demanding Fiat did rallies, Lancia did sportscar racing and Ferrari did F1. Alen had a lot of influence and wanted to win the RAC in a Stratos so persuaded the team to let him drive one - but that late they could only change the car, not the entrant.
It's usually said that the end of the Stratos in rallying was brought about by this internal politics - but it's not as simple as that as the changes to Appendix J had stopped the Stratos using the 4 valve heads and it was no longer as quick.

Proves they were finished in two different places by different people!
The real joke is that it was not really sponsorship in the conventional way - it was part of a negotiated deal/price for Ford buying Yale fork lift trucks from the Eaton Corporation for use in its factories.

Very nice to see you're up and running jorge!

Thanks also to Carles & FAL.

BTW Recently I started to use Forum Sport Auto site quite often and I managed to find pics of Bettega at 1978 San Remo & Corse, which clearly show that he was in a works Stratos on both of them.
I also found out that Mouton-Conconi at 1978 Monte Carlo, were in a Chardonnet-entered Stratos.
I couldn't, however, find anything about Vudafieri on San Remo & Corse rallies.

Please, does anyone know about the entrants of Blomqvist's Stratos at Swedish and Darniche's at Portugal, the entrants of Mercedeses at Safari (Zasada-Krupa, Singh-Doig, Cowan-Syer, Fawkes-Kaiser, all privateers?) and the entrants of Citroen CX 2400s at Portugal (Toivonen-Pajanen, Luc-Alessandrini, Romaozinho-Bernardo), Acropolis (Toivinen-Pajanen, Luc-Charbonnier, Nicolas-Laverne, Trautmann-Roch) and 1000 Lakes (Luc-Luparia).

I hadn't noticed before but I think it's to ensure correct English grammer! The pictures are taken from different sides of the cars. I have just checked a model I have of Mikkola's car and the wording is "lift trucks from Eaton Yale" on the left side. The wording on the right side is "Eaton's Yale lift trucks". Assuming that this model is an accurate reflection of the actual car then both Mikkola's & Waldegard's would have been the same.

Yes it's one of those things you don't notice or think about because it's so obvious! Pictures elsewhere of the Waldegard 78 car show it's the same as the Mikkola car. Same for 2 years in all British events. To get "Eaton" on the larger surface at the back on both sides it has to be different wording. Some advertising industry guru has probably grown rich on the pyschology of having a main logo in the same place to make maximum impact regardless of whether the words are gibberish.
The replica builders on another forum were having a major debate on the exact shade of blue used (it was a very "grey" shade of blue and at least one modern replica car is too bright). (Hope the model is correct!) No one had thought to look at the current Eaton Corporation web site.....which is mainly in their corporate blue.

As for Safari Mercedes, I recall when Tony Fowkes (not Fawkes) got the drive. I'm sure he would not have been able to afford it as a private entry so it was works funded (although probably local dealer-entered). It was linked to his involvement in the later marathon rallies.

Mercedes in Safari'78 was entered by D.T. Dobie & Co. Ltd, the same entrant as "works" Datsuns had. Mercedes cars were "works" ones and were entered by local importer (incidentaly the same company ran Datsun's dealership).
Citroens in Portugal and Acropolis were "works" ones too (I am not sure about Roamozinho) but not neccesarily entered under Citroen Sport Team (or something alike). It was different time and different habits - you didn't need to registarate works team to score manufacturer's points, you simply needed to finish in points. It was common to do rallies as a local dealer entry. It builds position of such dealer and was an element of local marketing.

Porsches were entered by Martini Racing Porsche System Engineering.
According to Holmes's book Citroens were "works" entrants. In Portugal Luc and Romaozinho ran group 2 cars and Henri Toivonen ran group 1 car. In Greece three Citroens were group 2 cars but in different types of specification. The most powerfull car used Nicolas, less powerfull were cars of Toivonen and Luc, young Trautmann drove group 1 car.
Darniche drove Andre Chardonnet Stratos.

By the way long time ago (in 1957) Polski Rally did three Yugoslavian drivers: Milivoje Vukovic (DKW), S. Vidmar (Porsche) and Santavic (Fiat 1100TV) - do you know christian names of Vidmar and Santavic? Is Milivoje the right name for Vukovic? I have an entry list for Polski Rally 1964 and there are three Zastavas 750 (starting numbers 27, 28, 29) and one Zastava 1300 (number 67) but it's all about. There are no names just only indication that those should be crews from Yugoslavia. Do you know something about? It was an entry list not a list of starters and I am not sure if they did start the event. Next year there were 5 Yugoslavian crews in Poland's round of ERC.

Oh, I'm terribly sorry Janusz, but after a whole day of trying I couldn't find anything about those guys.
I even asked mother of a friend (she used to be involved in some club-level rallying ages ago), but she never heard of them either.

Personally, I don't have anything even remotely close to this era.
I'm really very sorry I couldn't return the favour!

However, I still have a few 1978 questions to finish that season off.
1. The entrants of Opel Kadett GT/Es of Kullang-Berglund & Danielsson-Edqvist on Swedish and of Kullang-Berglund & Danielsson-de Jong on Criterium de Quebec.
2. Crew Temmes-Eriksson on Swedish, a works Saab or not?

That would be all for 1978.

As I may not be able to help next week, I'll try and cover RAC 79 works entries for Kaps!

Ford - effectively 7 mechanically-identical Escorts run under co-ordinated "works" service arrangements. This was the last official Ford works rally with Mk2 Escorts and all publicity photos etc show 7 Escorts as the "works" team.
3 entries from "FoMoCo" - Mikkola (Eaton Yale), Waldegard (Eaton Yale) and No.73 Guenda Eadie/Flip Kerr, Fiesta (prize drive for winning the UK Faberge Fiesta ladies championship).
Rothmans Rally Team-Vatanen, Equipe Esso-Clark, Andrews-Brookes, Haynes-Taylor, Ford Australia-Carr.
Haynes car actually built by Haynes, Brookes car originally works built but run during 79 by own mechanics. Others works built.

Lancia GB - Alen, Stratos. This car allegedly removed from museum and prepared by independent Italian Stratos specialist as works team no longer had any parts.
Lancia England - multiple entries of Autobiancis from European championship all running at back of field.
Alitalia Fiat - Rohrl, 131. Was to have been the (originally works built) car run in the UK during 1979 but found to have a twisted body during preparation and older (originally works built) UK 1978 car used.

Chrysler Competition Centre - Sunbeam Lotus
Team Toyota GB - Works Celicas
Saab Scania AB
BL Cars
Team Datsun Europe
DTV Castrol - Chevettes
DOT (UK) - Opel
Dealer Team Skoda (a UK driver at No 132)
Audi Motorsport - Works team of 4 Audi 80s
VEB Automobilwerk Eisenach - Wartburgs

Thanks a lot FAL!

But before that there's still some 1978 stuff that I don't know for sure.

-the entrants of Kullang & Danielsson at Swedish and Quebec,

-works Saab cars at Swedish, where there any besides Eklund's

-entrant for Ford of J. P. Nicolas at Portugal, as I believe that wasn't a works car, also at RAC, that PCA/Total Oil wasn't a works entry?

-entrant for Porsche of J. P. Nicolas at Monte and of F. Vincent at San Remo and Corse

januszsz

J-P. Nicolas for sure was a private entry for Monte Carlo. His car was run by Almeras brothers. Safari entry was probably the sole "works" entry of Porsche for WRC in 1978.

The trip to Quebec was arranged by Dealer Team Holland for Kullang, Bergsteyn and Danielsson but I don't know under wich team name they ran (it was a mix of swedish and dutch mechanics).

Francis Vincent's Porsche was a private entry.

Eklund was the only works Saab in Sweden, Blomqvist's Saab turbo was not ready so he switched to Lancia.

World Rallying says Nicholas' Escort in Portugal was entered by Ford of Britain, together with Waldegard, Vatanen and Mikkola.

Graham Robson has J-P Nicholas in a full works car (MTW200P) in Portugal 78
This particular car was sold to David Sutton in 79, so tends to be thought of as one of his hire cars, but in 78 it was a works car.
Nicholas on RAC 78 was entered by Peter Clarke Autos (Peter Clarke ran the Total UK programmes with various drivers in ex-works Escorts). As said earlier, there were no official works Fords on the 78 RAC but if, but for the strike, the main team cars had been works-entered, I think you would still have seen the Nicholas (ex-works) car as non-works (PCA) entered.

As also said once before, "following the money" is one way of deciding what was really works and what wasn't. I'm not sure of J-P Nicholas' status at Ford. They lacked a true tarmac specialist ever since Vic Elford left during the Cortina days. J-F Piot was funded by Ford France in a works-loaned car in earlier Escort years and J-P Nicholas may have been indirectly paid by Ford France or just Total but did on occasion drive a full works Escort, so may have been on a factory retainer....

Hmm, I guess I'll have to re-do my 1978 table.
I've been convinced now that I should regard Nicolas' Portugal entry as a works one, and that at RAC as a privateer.

Also, I wonder what were Lancia's plans for Sweden?
As we know, they entered only one car, and it was driven by Stig Blomqvist.
But, as Juha here revealed, it was only possible due to a fact that Saab could get only 1 new car ready in time for the rally, and they gave it to Eklund. (Strange decision if you ask me!)
So Blomqvist went with Lancia, and finished 4th.
But what interests me is, who was originally intended to drive that Stratos, or did Lancia only decided to enter the car for Blomqvist once it became clear that his Saab drive will not materialise?

Anybody knows consecutive numbers of following WRC 2007 events:
Rally Norway
Rally de Portugal
Rally Ireland
as well as the Rally Russia (IRC 2007 event).
Regards
Janusz

When Janusz asked this some time back we settled on Ireland and Portugal, but we didn't continue the discussion if Rally Norway should be considered a continuation of Rally Finnskog Norway (which would mean last weekend the 26th Rally Norway was held) or if last year's event was a new start, making this the 2nd Rally Norway. At the moment I tend to include the Finnskog rallies as the organisers of that event also play a role in Rally Norway and Rally Norway took the spot of Rally Finnskog on the calendar. Does anyone have reasons to change this view?

Also, we didn't reach a conclusion if Rally Russia can be considered a continuation of Rally Vyborg.

I don't recall it from before, but Ireland really should be a new event (trial run last year for WRC 2007). The traditional Circuit of Ireland may or may not run this year (currently it is still happening) but that is because of a falling out between sponsor and organisers.

Yes, we already settled on Rally Ireland being a new event, having its first edition in 2005.

I've got a question about Portugal as well though - I checked and according to the edition numbering in my database this year's event should be the 40th edition of Portugal. I've taken my edition numbers from World Rallying, but I don't have them at hand here at university, so if someone could check if 2001 (the last WRC edition of the rally until this year) is edition 34 or 35 according to Holmes would be helpful.

Interesting question, but IMO Rally Norway is not just a continuation of Rally Finnskog Norway (a rally that in early days also held the names Finnskog Vinterrally and Rally Finnskog). The first event was held in 1982 and the last and 24th was held in 2005. Again IMO, this so far ends the story of Rally Finnskog, which makes this years WRC-event the 2nd Rally Noirway.

Only three stages out of 18 in this years Rally Norway used bits and pieces of old Rally Finnskog stages (SS 4, SS 5 and SS7). RN also used roads/stages earlier used in Rally Solør (SS2), Rally Snøfresern a.k.a "Snowplough" (SS 9/18 and 10), Rally Elverum (SS 9/18), Rally Hedmarken (SS13/16) and Rally Lillehammer (SS 12). The three first events were snow rallies, Hedmarken ran on gravel and Lillehammer on tarmac/gravel. So inside the Rally Norway route there were pieces/parts of stages from a total of six other events.

It is true that some of the organisers from Finnskog and some businessmen from the town of Kongsvinger originally came up with the idea of a WRC-event in Norway, and sure enough they would very much have liked to see this event as a pure continuation of Rally Finnskog. The first plans put forward was a more or less complete Finnskog-based event, but other organising clubs and not to forget the Norwegian ASN (Norges Bilsportforbund) was against this. In fact everybody outside the Kongsvinger/Finnskog "clan" pushed for a Hamar-based event to make use of the strong sporting reputation from the 1994 Olympics (in Lillehammer and Hamar). And this was of course the only sensible solution, as we have seen this last week.

When it comes to Rally Finnskog history I can tell all interested parties that this is now well documented in a DVD-film (made by my company - http://www.tv-media.no) called "20 år med Rally Finnskog" ("20 years of Rally Finnskog"). We regretably didn`t have any video or TV-footage from the first three events, 82,83 and 84, but everything from 1985 to 2005 is documented in a 3 1/2 hour film.

The text on the cover of the film - and the commentary - states that Rally Finnskog was the rally that originally started the process towards a WRC-event in Norway. But still, historically and geographically, you have to consider Rally Finnskog and Rally Norway two different events.

No data/records but sounds about right. As far as I know the first UK start (there were multiple start venues, like Monte Carlo) for the TAP Rally was 1968 (1 car, a Mini Cooper S). In 1969 there were quite a few UK starters. Both times from a hotel near Heathrow airport but not the same hotel as the RAC Rally.

http://www.worldrally.net/pakar/95/portugal95.html

I checked my World Rallyings and Holmes is consistent in his numbering from the start.

Might the reason be that the 1967 rally was a national event only which wasn't included in the official count for a while? Just guessing here.

And thank you Iskald for your eplanation. Does anyone have anything to add or do we agree that this was the 2nd Rally Norway?

And thank you Iskald for your eplanation. Does anyone have anything to add or do we agree that this was the 2nd Rally Norway?

Nobody can disagree with that, I think. I certainly don`t, having competed in the Rally Finnskog events first time in 1986 and nearly all years up to 2005. For those who are interested I will tell that I have done the event in a great variety of cars like Toyota Corolla WRC, Toyota Celica ST205, Ford Escort Cosworth, Mitsubishi Evo 6, Peugeot 205, Lada Samara 1300 (!), Ford Escort RS Turbo, VW Golf, Opel Kadett Gsi and some others.

I know there are several people that would have liked to see a lot more of the stages from the Finnskog Rally in Rally norway, but regretably these stages are too far away (eastwards) and the infrastructure is not good enough in this wast forest area that is called Finnskogen (Finn Forest - named after Finnish immigrants!). A pity really for some of these stages are classics in Norway and fantastic stages. But with todays regulations concerning remote services, and also the limitations in stage and road-section mileage between service halts, its just not possible.

Re- Portugal. I am fairly certain 1968 was the first year we really became aware in the UK of the TAP Rally as an International. I have tried to recall whether it might have been 1967 but I'm sure it wasn't. The next year some good deals must have been on offer because there were a lot of British private entries. That second year must have been 1969 because there were several private Escort Twincams (Toney Cox is one I recall). If it had been 1968 there would not have been any in private hands yet.
But Jorge is the expert!

Thanks for your input on this matter, FAL! I think it's certain there was an event in 1967, but the question is if it was an international event, and if during the 1980s and 1990s it was included in the "edition count" of the rally. It's certain it's included now - the official Rally Guide includes the 1967 winners in the roll of honour.

In the book 'César Torres - História do Rallye de Portugal" they put (how do we say) the papers announced the rally and for example the 1973's edition was the 7th Rallye International TAP. In 1967 it's written there '1st Rallye Internacional TAP'.

We in the UK were told about TAP rally as a "new" rally for 1968, so I guess Holmes (like me, at the time a member of Sutton and Cheam Motor Club) just assumed it was the first version!

Toyota entrant was "Team Toyota" with the address of Toyota GB. Rorhl and Kullang were "Opel Euro Handler Team" with the address being Russelheim (same entrant of Opels as on 1976 RAC). Carlsson was "Dealer Opel Team Holland" and Danielsson was "Dealer Opel Team" (the UK operation of Tony Fall).
But it gets even more complicated....

The Ford entry of John Taylor/Phil Short was "Haynes of Maidstone" and I think by then they built their own cars (so this is not recorded by Robson as a works-built Ford on this rally) although it would have been serviced partly under the Ford "umbrella".
The contemporary event report refers to 3 works Ford entries only. (Ford in UK were of course also funding the Group 1 RS2000s of Malclom Wilson and Graham Elsmore in addition to the other cars mentioned above).

As for Fiat, the event report refers to 6 works entries, 4 from Olio Fiat "in the blue and yellow colours" and 2 from Autonovo "in the black and white colours of the Chequered Flag".
There was a 7th Fiat actually entered by The Chequered Flag (Garage) for Billy Coleman/Dave Richards. This was an ex-works car that was in the UK throughout 1977 for the Brtish Championship.
BUT... I have now seen a photo of the Lampinen car on the 77 RAC and it is NOT in the Olio Fiat colours but carries "Fiat UK" and "The Chequered Flag". The Lampinen car on the provisional entry list I have was one of the Olio Fiat entries not Autonovo.
There was also of course one Stratos for Munari ("Lancia/Alitalia" but with the address of Lancia England) and I see Lancia attempted to obtain a late entry for Darniche too but this was corrrectly refused as there was already a long list of reserves (this is interesting for me as I co-drove the very last private entry that actually made it into the rally from the reserve list!).

Obviously Fiat UK (and The Chequerd Flag Garage - Graham Warner a dealer that sold the more "sporting" Fiats and Lancias in the UK - were a major source of funding for this large Fiat entry. What I cannot remember is whether Fiat had already won the Manufacturers WRC by the time of the RAC (Waldegard was first drivers champion?). If so, maybe they were going to withdraw all entries and it was only money from Fiat UK that brought them to this RAC?
What I also cannot remember is seeing any of the works cars on the event itself (I was running at the back) and the only magazine photo I can find is the Lampinen one - so I don't know the actual colours of the others.
(and no, I dont have such details for other 77 WRC events - I wasn't entered on them!)

(Your name sounds familiar to me but I probably knew most people only by sight rather than by name throughout that period). I was mainly co-driving then driving in that period but was often in service crews earlier - and would have been hovering to take the roadside spots as soon as your teams moved on. Most of the guys here are heavily into results/records but I do try and drift off into annecdotes from that period whenever possible! Pentti Arikkala posts regularly elsewhere on the forum with some crazy stories but we haven't got him on to this thread yet. Tim who used to work on the Tony Maslen hire cars in Belgium etc. is around on another forum. I'm sure it would be useful to know roughly which years you were with which teams so people know when to ask for info on which makes. Does the timescale you mentioned put you in S. Africa when Mick Jones was runing the RS1700T there?
For rally plates, there is a major thread on a French forum which started out on early rally plates but has moved into the 70s and 80s:

A familiar theme "when is works not works"!
As with BMW later, Prodrive probably had more association with Porsche than either wanted to admit but I don't recall them in any way running "works" cars as such then. It is fairly safe to assume that only started for Prodrive with Subaru? Technical help and direct funding are two different things. Just about everyone seems to have driven those Porsches (presumably Toivonen was in a Lancia on that rally - he had a split programme between Prodrive and Lancia that year didn't he?). Last event I saw them on Roger Clark and Saeed El Hajri were driving them!

I'm sure someone on the Tour de Course thread on the French Forum Auto
would have detailed results but I'm not sure any of the french posters there lokk at this thread (although at least one visits this forum).

I can add christian name of the first winner: Milan Tvrdon. I am pretty sure that word "Matador" was added much much later (21st century). It is brand of slovakian tyres in Czechoslovakia times known as "Barum". Nowadays Czechs have Barum and Slovaks have Matador. And one more: it was named Rallye Tatry (if you care about the original names).

81 RAC shows entrant as Lasse Lampi himself. Surprised that Sutton should appear as any entrant in 1981. David Sutton Cars/Sutton Motorsport operated as "Rothmans Rally Team" for 1980 and 81. (2 cars on Swedish and 1000 Lakes - Vatanen and Arrikkala - and 3 cars on RAC - those 2 + Wilson). Lampi may have had an ex-Sutton hire car but I'm surprised it was entered by Sutton or serviced by Sutton. Maybe our recent new member Paul Batten knows?

I've found some indication that Saby and Coppier were entered in 1981 Monte, Corse and RAC by Bozian, and that Ragnotti was the only works Renault driver that season.

Is it possible that Bozian entered cars as early as 1981?

I need some confirmation on this, please.

FAL
11th April 2007, 17:33
No Coppier on 81 RAC on any list I have. Ragnotti Renault Sport Elf and Saby shown as private entry on list I have. As far as I recall both Renaults ran in "works" colours but I may be confused with 82.

FAL
11th April 2007, 19:25
From an interview with Renault team manager Patrick Landon at the time of 81 RAC:
Ragnotti car was 440VB91, the Corsica car, full spec, 260 bhp, 900kg (yellow works colours).
Saby car described as 6480VM38, factory (Autosport entry list says entrant: B. Saby) customer spec car, 200bhp, 930-940kg, French Championship winer, red.
(The only other Renault 5 Turbo on the 81 RAC was the private British car of John Price - although he got cars and parts from the factory team).
None on 82 RAC.

Kaps
11th April 2007, 23:55
Thanks FAL. I think it's established then, that Saby's wasn't a works car on any of the Monte, Corse or RAC.

And Coppier only appeared at Monte & Corse, I presume as a privateer, both times.

In 1982 Marlboro Rallye do Brasil Audi finished 1st and Opel 2nd and yet, everywhere I looked it said that Audi scored only 10 pts and Opel 9, instead of Audi 18 and Opel 16.
It's like they only were awarded points for finishing 1st and 2nd overall (10 and 9 pts respectively) and no points for finishing 1st and 2nd in Gr.4.

However, a Ford finished 3rd, and received 8 pts (3rd overall) + 8pts (1st Gr.2) = 16 pts.

Does anybody know why Audi & Opel didn't received full points?

It was because there were not enough group 4 starters to score points in that group.

I am not sure, but something (my memory) says it was minimum 5 cars. I Brasil there were 4 group 4 cars on the start line. Note that sometimes my memory is not working properly ;)

Does anybody know reasons for retirements for Toyotas of Waldegard & Eklund at 1983 RAC?
Some sources claim that Waldegard had a mechanical and Eklund an accident, but others claim the other way around.
So I'd like to know what is right.

Autosport says:
Eklund - engine, after stage 23
Waldegard - OTL (after accident), after stage 32

I will check other sources when time permits. I don't have official results for 83 as I wasn't competing, only 82 and 84.

Waldegaard's rally ended when he stuffed the car into the trees in Grizedale Forest (Waldegaard's Toyota losing a front wheel). Per Eklund expired after SS23 Falstone.

Jorge! It' amazing, what you can contribute. Thank you very much for this.
For the answer above I did some research on my own.
I found out, that the first name of Löw is Folker, a first name, that is not very common in Germany, but it is a first name, that can be used.

One thing I noticed during my research is, that in the homepage of Rallye Deutschland 1992 Droogmans is on third place. In Tjeerd's database Droogmans is disqualified.

As I know, how efficient Tjeerd is working, I believe in his source. Does anyone remember the background of this disqualification.

I've found it out myself. After the rally investigation concering fuel had been made. For Droogmans a too high lead content had been measured. So weeks after the event he had been disqualified.

It is quite embarrassing, that in a privately organised database the result is correct and on the official homepage of a WRC-organiser a wrong result is published.

Hi guys,

Out of curiosity, just how the Ford RS200 Evo would fare against Audi Sport Quattro S1 Evo, Peugeot 205 T16 Evo & Lancia Delta S4?

I'm also quite suprised to see that the 600+ bhp RS200 Evo doesn't have much wings compared to the similarly powerful Audi Sport Quattro S1 Evo?
Is it stable enough?

No one can ever know. (Rallycross is not a real comparison with rallying).
Like the Metro 6R4, the RS200 was delayed and Ford, like Austin Rover, found when they started rallying it at world level they had underestimated where Peugeot and Lancia would be in development by then. Conversely, Peugeot and Lancia were further down the road to getting the ultimate development and thus had less to come. Many think the RS200 Evo would have dominated Group B rallying. The Metro 6R4 never would have done without a complete re-homologation of another 200 cars along the lines of the Will Gollop turbo rallycross Metro. Its lack of turbos meant Evolution would not have helped it. As for Audi, many feel they never would have really "got it together" and had missed their chance. Others, however, believe a front-engined car fully sorted with all the right bits would have been the best. When Pentti expesses that view, as he has on this forum, we should all listen.

At 1984 RAC McRae-Nicholson & Fisher-Frazer were in the Opel Mantas entered by GM Dealersport.
I wonder, did that had anything to do with the works Opel Euro Team (like, for example, Nissan/DT Dobie entries at Safari), or was it a separate, private entry?

FAL
25th May 2007, 23:26
The UK GM operations were always dealer funded to a greater or lesser degree. That included the DTV Chevette programme. Moreover, support for particular drivers can be linked to Vauxhall/Opel dealer involvement (John Cleland in racing, quite apart from rallying). Laterly this funding was inadequate and additional sponsors were associated.
"Following the money" is always difficult. I can't be sure there was no financial input from the main Opel team in Russelheim but I doubt it. However, you also need to remember the (British) team manager of the Opel team in Russelheim ended up in jail for financial irregularities......

FAL
26th May 2007, 20:34
Russel Brookes was also in a GM Dealersport Manta on the 84 RAC. His carried Andrews sponsorship, McRae's AC Delco (the GM spare parts operation) and Fisher's Shell, confirming additional money was having to be found to run the cars at all. I'm not sure whether Fisher's car was built in Ireland by Sydney Meeke or in England with the other two but all three were under the GM Dealersport service "umbrella" at that time. Their results were claimed by GM UK but reality was the UK GM HQ operation (making Vauxhalls not Opels) was not putting its hand in its pocket to fund them. Once the team was using Vauxhall Astras in GpA (a car built in the UK) things may have been different.

Finally, Lars-Erik Torph. I seem to remember that he lost his life at 1989 Monte Carlo, but as a spectator. I think it was in that horror-crash of Alex Fiorio, who went off the cliff and straight thru a group of people in the process, with poor Lars-Erik beeing among them. Is that correct?

I believe the 1932 "RAC" Rally was actually titled the Torquay Rally and became the RAC rally in 1933. I'm afraid I don't have the books that cover that period and it's a bit before my time! Also the crews' names from then are not names familiar in other forms of motor sport.

It is correct Lars-Erik Torph was killed as a spectator on the Monte Carlo Rally (after retiring from the event I think). He was a sensation on the 84 RAC in a private GpA Ascona and I expected to see him straight into a top drive but he never seemed to get quite the right deal. I should know the fate of the others but I cannot recall it.

About LE Torph you are right. Concerning Sundström he died at home - probably it was heart attack and Recalde died of heart attack too during Villa Dolores Rally while he was second overall. Howether it was not on the stage he collapsed in his motorhome.

Thanks for the clear up Juha. Some cars I did not know the drivers of or visa versa. and I only knew a few codrivers. And yes it was the late Jean-Louis Dumont, not Jean-Claude.

Juha
16th June 2007, 21:58
There's also Jean-Michel Dumont, but that's his son.

In 85 Dumont drove the second Belga Porsche. The Nissan he drove in 83 was driven by Roothaert, and Jean-Louis was supposed to finetune the car, but they never got to do that. After his crash hisplace in the team was taken by Reginster from the Haspengouw on. The car he drove was a new bodyshell with the internals of the crashed car. The Gaban Porsche that Reginster drove before was then hired to Francis Vincent at Ypres, Guy Hendrickx (Bianch rally) and then driven by Pascal Gaban at the Condroz.

Here are the retirement reasons for Spa 85:
Demuth - eletrical problems
Snijers - ignition faillure
Airikka - transmission
Droogmans - crash
Colsoul - crash
Eklund - ignition faillure
Dumont - taken out of the rally by oganisers
Roothaert - crash

Demuth was leading by 20 minutes before his car let him down three stages before the end. Waldegard (who'd spent 15 minutes stuck in the snow) took over and finished six minutes ahead of Duez who had a lot of punctures.

FAL
16th June 2007, 23:11
Thanks Juha for reminding me of that year. Both Belga 911s in 85 were RAS Sport cars? Is that correct? I had forgotten who was in the Gaban car after Snijers moved to the 037 for 85. Jose Lareppe's Ascona was his new white GpA car wasn't it? (he was using his old Kadett GTE and then a dark red Manta in the National rounds wasn't he? Was Michel Dumoulin the quick young driver in a (dark blue) RS2000 (a Gp1 spec car re-homologated into GpB) or am I thinking of someone else?
I don't have any of the copies of Turbo I bought in Belgium at the time and I only did one of the Open Championship rounds in 85 (Wallonie - my only International event non-finish as a driver!).

Juha
17th June 2007, 10:43
Yes, both owned by RAS. They were then sold off to Marc Soulet. Reginster drove one of them in smaller rallies in the late 80s.

The Bastos Porsche (registerend UL 212, the same as the older Porsche in 83) was hired by Reginster for 85 sponsored by Alligator. Pascal Gaban drove another Porsche, DRL 970, in the national championship but I don't think it was a real work Porsche. Reginster used the car at Spa (11th), the national rally of Hannut (1st), Circuit des Ardennes (2nd), TAC rally (crash) and finished third at the Rally de Wallonie. Then RAS wanted them to drive their second car so the Gaban Porsche was then used by Pascal Gaban at the Haspengouw, he broke the gearbox. Francis Vincent (codriven by Willy Lux) hired it for Ypres and crashed it. Then Guy Hendrickx had it for the Bianchi (3rd). At the Condroz, Gaban retired. He did become national champion.

José Lareppe did use the white Ascona but I don't know what he used in national rallies.

The Spectacular blue Escort was Dumoulin who ran out of money during the season.

Who were you codriving? And in what car?

FAL
17th June 2007, 22:08
Thanks Juha! I was driving not co-driving, in an Escort very similar to the Dumoulin car, which is why I can judge how good he was - it was embarrassing to us how quick he went! When the helicopter supporting the Snijers Lancia brought down the telephone wires on one Wallonie stage and it was delayed, I got the chance to see his driving, as that stage had two laps and cars in front passed us entering their second lap when we were in the start queue about to start the stage.
You mention Guy Hendrickx - my service crew dashed to Charleroi from Namur (where we were staying in Simeon Delbruyere's hotel at Wepion) the day before Wallonie to get two new Michelins from him when we had a puncture in practice. He had done the RAC Rally the year before, as we had.

1973 - 2° Haspengouw Rally
1974 - 3° Haspengouw Rally
You've just chosen the only editions for which I don't have the dates. :D Wasn't the rally named "Omloop van Haspengouw" then? Because it was in 75-79 the name changed in 1980.
I'm still looking for the results from 72 and 74, those are the only years of which I'm missing the top 10 resultats (other stuff is welcome too).

1982 - TAC Rally, 4-5 april
1983 - TAC Rally, 16-17 april

1983 - Rally de Namur
Should be "Ronde du nouveau Namur"
23-24 april

1983 - Rally de Andenne
Should be "500 kilometres d'Andenne"
9-10 april

Namur and Andenne merged into the Rally de Wallonie.

1984 - TAC Rally, 14-15 april
1986 - 3° Rally de Wallonie, 30-31 may, 1 june
1987 - 4° Rally de Wallonie, 1-2 may
1988 - Rally de Hannut, 26-27 march
1988 - TAC Rally, 9-10 april
1989 - 6° Rally de Wallonie, 2-4 june
