Looks like we may get the chance to see Mikkola, Vatanen/Richards, Waldegård and Blomgvist compete once again in Mk2 Escorts on the McRae stages 08 in Sept as a tribute to Colin. The rwd cars will be running at the front of the field too.. rally nirvana !

"SOME of the most famous names in world rallying are planning their own special tribute to Colin McRae, the 1995 World Rally Champion, who died in a helicopter crash last year.

In an unprecedented move, they are planning to contest the Colin McRae Forest Stages Rally later this year.

The rally, final round of the County Saab Scottish Rally Championship, is run by Colin’s own club, South Lanarkshire-based Coltness Car Club.

The proposal, which so far features Hannu Mikkola, Ari Vatanen, Björn Waldegård and Stig Blomgvist, was hatched at a pre-Rally Mexico dinner last week.

Other world champions are also being targeted and if plans come to fruition they could all be armed with Ford Escort Mk2s and would run at the head of the field. David Richards, who co-drove Vatanen to the world title in 1981 and masterminded McRae’s early career at Subaru, is planning to be reunited with the Finn for the event on September 27.

He said: “It would be the first time I've been in a car since ’81 and I would only do it because of Colin.”

It is understood the former champions will line up in Ford Escort Mk2s and a search is already underway to source cars for the star-studded entry.

Event regulations specify two-wheel-drive cars run at the head of the field and it is believed the legendary names will lead the pack.

Colin’s father Jimmy is also planning an entry on the event, which counts as the final round of the Scottish Rally Championship. Other ex-title winners could also take part.

Campbell Roy, Colin McRae’s former business manager, said the planning process was still at an early stage but admitted the idea would be a “fitting tribute” to McRae and added: “It’s something the family are looking at but nothing has been finalised. It’s also the last year in charge of the rally for the event’s Blackwood-based Jim Brown so we had wanted to do something a bit special in any case.

“I expect people would be willing to come along for Colin but we still have a few funding issues to sort out because expenses will have to be covered and cars will have to be hired. But the idea is there and it would be great if it could happen.”

Subaru team boss David Richards, who co-drove Ari Vatanen to the 1981 world title, is due to be reunited with the Finn for the rally, which would mark the first time they have competed together since their title-winning campaign 27 years ago.

He said: “It’s purely because of Colin that I would do it. I wouldn't do it under any other circumstances.

“I’ve had a note from Hannu and Ari and I have talked about doing events but it will be the first time I’ve been in a car [with Ari] since I got out of the car in 1981.”

Also on the SRC forum.. thought it was big enough news to merit a place on here too. Something we are unlikely ever to see ever again.. Should make a record attendance for what is already a very popular event. Unmissable, my brother Steve will be competing too. Anyone on here thinking of making the trip?

Why not invite the stars of todays WRC as well ? Seb, Petter, Henning, Jari-Matti, Galli and the rest of the bunch would be fun to be seen driving a Mk 2 Escort in addition to the old heroes !!

Most of them knew and have driven at the same time as Colin !

Petter and Seb wouldn't be allowed to compete in Fords though :)

If Petter could drive a Focus WRC on ROC why not an old MK 2 Escort?

For this, I think the bean counters and lawyers should take the day off, and let them have some real fun !!!!!

Maybe the point is that guys who used to drive those cars in the past are invited, the current drivers have payed tributes to Colin in allkind of occations allraedy.

Fair point ;) I still would rather see Ari in a Mk2 than Petter or Seb or any of the other current drivers :)

If that comes true i will plan to go there! Are there any website with info about the event, or at least info of last years events?

Event site at http://www.mcraestages.co.uk

HQ is based in Perth and one stage stage is run just off the A9 at Dunkeld, the others between there and Aberfeldy and Drummond Hill near Kenmore. Sometimes Errochty is used but wasn't last year, it's a very compact event.

The date for the McRae was meant to be October 5th but they moved it to September 27th, so I might be going down to Yorkshire instead. Would have preferred to go to Sanremo instead though..

Shame the event clashes with the Trackrod and Cork aswell as the British Baja which is also a round of the Mcrae enduro championship. Will be intersting for Jimmy if he is in a position to win the BHRC on the Trackrod...

Great idea and tribute for Colin though guess the stages will be heaving..

I'm thinking they might move the date of the McRae Stages because of this, i'm sure Jimmy will say something at the Motor Club meetings.
I also heard Gronholm has said he would like to do it.

Hope the rally does move as i'm all booked up to go to Cork :(

Nah I'm sure it won't move. It was scheduled for the following Saturday (October 4th) but clashed with a conference (some rowing thing if I remember rightly but probably wrongly?) so there would have been a shortage of hotel rooms available. They can't move it any earlier because then it would be too close to the previous SRC round (Merrick). Moving it a week later would have meant it clashed with Mull.

Wasnt aware of Marcus's interest in doing the event, that would be fantastic but another name that has been linked is Marku Allen.
Mark Higgans has bought Alister McRaes Escort and wants to do it and Petter Solberg has also been aproached.

Oh that's a big pain in the arse :( Considering it clashes with 3 national championships as well! (BRC, BHRC & MSA Gravel!)

Can't see many people being in Yorkshire that weekend

If they can do it, sounds great. Marcus driving an Escort would be something to see, and as he works for Ford still I wouldn't have thought there'd be a problem... however any other works guys I'm not too sure if they'd be allowed to. Hopefully they can make an exception this time!

As it's my local event thankfully don't need accommodation and can usually get a long lie too :D

C'mon, that happens 16 times a year, well 15 this time around. Anyway, the rear drive escorts are more fun to watch. I've made some flash tributes to Colin McRae. Check them out and let me know if you like them.
