Nice to see Loeb back behind the wheel again. Will be interesting to see if he's fully recovered for the Monte, allthough I expect he'll be healed some time before. Also good to see that we can attach pictures in the post.

Maybe you are near-sighted? ;)
I don't know, maybe I'm biased because I think the Xsara is one of the worst cars I've driven... the feel, the quality. It really sucks! I'm talking about the standard car now, not the WRC.

I dont know if thats the correct private Xsara, but yes, as a road car it doesnt look very nice. But as a rallycar with other spoilers, a bigger wing, rims and a wider weelhouse? it looks much better.
Its not the best looking wrcar (as the 206 is) but I think it looks better then the C4..
C4 isnt that a mine?

Yeah for sure it looks better as a WRC car than a standard car, I'll agree with you on that.

I think, that what You mentioned was and will be one of the biggest problems of Subaru, even they nowadays will use BF Goodrich.
Mr. Hagström was a guite good driver, but his skills as set-up maker and developer was not so good. I made these remarks on those days, when he droves his Corolla WRC. He hasn't logic when he changed his set-up's and sometimes he hasn't even idea what to do. Sometimes he was totally lost with his set-up's!
Example: Do anybody remember how many rallies or even stages Mr. Hagström won outside of Finland and Estonia with his Corolla WRC???
And what comes to testskills of Petter and Chris, I'm not convinced either...

What I've heard it's pretty much the same.
I understand that Pasi Hagstrom and Esko Reiners were brought to SWRT when Tommi arrived in 2002, and Tommi tried to re-create the "Finnish connections" he had at Ralliart when he failed to persuade Lasse Lampi to leave Ralliart at the same time as he did. I also dont think Colin McRae was much of an effective test driver, maybe SWRT should hire Carlos, as in my opinion I think he was the best test and development driver whilst still an active rally driver.
Having said that I think Petter is more than capable of setting up a car - he works tirelessly on tests, often late into the night nad his technical feedback is very good, and he knows what he wants / needs and how a car works. By now most people realise the SWRT problems started in 2004 and got worse with each year of the 3 year programme committed by that homologation. Hopefully it gets better with S12B, and then S14 (the hatchback) the following year.

looks good
Was his first test with the C4 back in Feb 06. He's cautious in his comments, says the feeling is "quite good", the rear is OK in hairpins, i think he means it keeps a good balance in and after the turn. Car is more comfortable than the Xsara, it lacks some precision when it's fast, he thinks it's well born.

Citroën and Loeb were testing yesterday in the Alps region (near Chambery). No snow.
They are testing until tonight hoping to have some snow. They are using the "col du Galibier" roads today.
They are satisfied with the car so far but remain cautious. Loeb said that he will discover at the Monte Carlo rally if the car is easy enough to drive. He said he is confident but he said that he is not 100 % certain he is right about the set up of the car. He said: "wait and see".
Source: L'Equipe (French national newspaper).
Personaly, I really hope the car will be easy to drive. I know it's the key in rallying. I trust Citroën Sport. I am optimistic.
If the car is good, the fight with Ford should be fantastic all year long.
On the other hand, if the C4 is not easy enough to drive, Ford will be to hard to catch.

He had read it in this forum http://frontibus.free.fr/forum/viewforum.php?f=6&sid=38cdc124ecc408ee5fb88fbfc4e834bc but there is a video of Loeb testing in the dry with some leaves on the road i think it was one of the first test videos
His french is not right. It wasn't the same site for sure. The day before the snow test, Loeb has tested on tarmac but this was not the same area.

C'mon! There're the laws of physics! 1sec per km faster is impossible if the car cannot fly. Just on such a spedd there will be absolutely no traction, no matter how powerful the car is. The "a" will move the car outside the corner, not to it!!

This I wonder about. Is there somebody from Prodrive here? Or somebody else that has some new tech info about the car.
At least they must have done something drastic to the response system. sound more like an even burn, than the usual bangs. Also the sound of the "blow off" has chanced. In some of the test it sounds like they are using some sort of pressurized reservoir.

According to engineers the C4 is about 1sec/km fastest than the Xsara.
In that case Loeb would win every by three minute. You can think is it realistic or not. Maybe they were just joking. On the other hand it's not the first time when the new car is said to be superfast without proper basement: few years ago it was said that 307 was 26 sec faster than 206 in the same 30 km distance. In reality 307 was just narrowly faster.
I remember that in the summer time Loeb - or some personel from Citroen - confirmer that according to parallel tests between the cars C2 was bit faster on asphalt but on gravel it was not yet as good as Xsara.

It's not just an impression. Forget the 300 bhp legend. Actually, all top WRC cars are around 400 bhp now. That's also why they are so impressive to watch.
BTW, I want to underline this: these cars are fantastic to drive and to watch (4WD, high torque, power). All occasional drivers recognize that a WRC is one of the most exciting car to drive on earth: Dindo Capello, Andy Priaulx, etc.
The sad part of this story is that I think that most people will realize how great the WRC cars and the current technical regulations are only if this category disappears one day (I hope it won't happen!).

And the red/white C4 looks ver good from the frontside , unfortunaly the back is not the best part. Which is the part of the car that the competition will see the most, Loeb and Sordo disappearing in the distance to the podium and champagne/celebration girls :) .

Yes....today Solberg is here in the North Sardinia, to another comparative test between Impreza 06 and 07, like every year before Mexico.
Some Sardinian roads look similar to Mexican ones, so Subaru every year uses these roads for pre-Mexico tests.
I saw some pics taken by some friends of me that were there and the two Imprezas look rather different outside, esepcially in the front side, but above all inside. The engine is very different even simply looking at it.

The boy who took the photos I wrote about showed me them in his notebook but as we met by chance we hadn't a cd or a usb pen to download them.
We'll meet again this weekend during a National Rally, so I'll be able to post them next Monday.
However the photos posted by ewrc.cz are rather expressive.

anyone knows which is the utility of the spotlight that appears in some photos? In the front left area of the car. Here you can see:
http://usuarios.lycos.es/kernel_gdi/DSCN3005_resize.JPG
I think is some kind of sensor to measure paramaters like speed, ground height, etc... Am I right?
Ive got a theory...
Perhaps there is a camera there somewhere too that watched the ground in front of the wheel. They may take note of the road infront of the wheel and how the suspension setup handles the actual road surface.
Merit there?

Correvit make a range of sensors that use light as the key measuring tool.
http://www.corrsys-datron.com/Support/Data_Sheets/Datasheets-Sensors/cds-d_SFII-P_e.pdf
i used Correvit light sensors for years testing road cars, but haven't used this latest generation of tool.
a lot of the general test stuff moved from light to microwave sensors a few years ago, and now VBox uses satellite navigation to do a similar job (it can measure the minimal height differences from when you open the door, for example).
however the light sensors are still the most accurate to the most decimal places.
they can be used for distance, time and acceleration, obviously, and that can link back to another CAN bus to trace the line used by the car on any given piece of road.
not being able to see the unit, i can't tell you what it is exactly, but i'd be pretty sure it would be something like this.

Subaru will be testing in Portugal next week i think it was
DaniV
21st February 2007, 00:53
Is this really a possibility? I mean, aren´t the WRC teams forbidden to test outside the FIA selected countries? I think Portugal doesn´t make part of this list, but I don´t know if my knowledge about this is right! So, it would be great if anyone could clear this doubt!
Obviously I hope it´s true!

13.2.2 For Manufacturers or Manufacturer teams
registered in the Championship, testing is permitted:
a) On a testing site proposed by the

the FIA
b) In France, Great Britain and N.Ireland,
Spain, Italy and the Czech Republic.
c) For a maximum of four days per calendar
year in Finland, Greece and Germany and either

d) In the case of a Manufacturer, for a
maximum of 13 sessions (a session shall comprise
consecutive days). However, the total number of days
shall not exceed 48 in any calendar year. This clause
does not apply to testing as stated in clause a).

It looks really bad for Subaru. May it be that the structural differencies between the Subaru and Cit/Ford are to big to come to grips with? Seems like it anyway: the Subaru is a little to big for it own good, and I also think that it has some aerodynamical drawbacks compared to Cit/Ford. The giant spoiler that they used before made the car understeer when sliding for one example. I remeber Petter mentioning sliding at high speeds causing the Subaru to loose its balance slightly, but that was two years ago...
I guess the CW, wheather you look at the cars front first, or from tha side, is better in Cit/Ford, and that is not really easy to build yourself around...

That doesn't make sense as hatchbacks usually have worse aerodynamics, unless its the way Subaru set it up?

When I was at Rally Sweden I was talking to someone (sorry can't name them for obvious reasons) very important in SWRT and his comments were basically along the line of: here we go again, we have just got the 06 right and now we have to start on the 07. It was more of how he said it rather than what he said that left me with impression that testing on the 07 model hasn't been good at all up to Rally Sweden.
Another team member (less in the know) basically said we just have to get through 07 and wait for the totally new 08 car before we start kicking arse.
For the sake of Subaru and the sport lets hope they have made some huge advancements in Spain.
Cheers

It's funny that team member thinks "they got the 06 car right" because as a SWRT fan, I thought the 06 car got better but was never right til very end :D Hopefully the team won't get satisfied by finishing behind 2 Ford and 2 Citroen in every rally ;)
