Am I the only one who notices a large difference in the sound of the Yaris WRC engine compared to last year? Something to do with some added ignition, like Hyundai already had last year? ;)

Already heard some people mention that on previous tests. But they said there's an upgrade. I have no idea what they have done, but I know that the exhaust is one of the few parts that can be modified in the engine, and one that shapes the sound.

I´m sure I mentioned it earlier. Could be heard on late rallies last year also.

Having watched them all so far, the M-Sport test was so much more exciting. Maybe the roads used or the conditions but still a real thrill compared to the other tests.
PS. Not sure if posted but this shows Tanak changing a wheel on the Puma at the end:

Just a week left to find out how fast someone is. And better comparisons when fans are filming the cars passing the same places in stages
The surfaces and road is so different in Ford tests and in Toyota and Hyundai tests so it isn’t really comparable IMO

"In terms of event preparation, for 2022 the equation was simple: one day per driver per European round of the championship. For a three-car team this season, that meant 30 days. For a three-car team in 2023, it’s a flat rate of 21 days. If you’re a two-car team, it’s 14 days.
And the teams can use those days wherever and with whoever they like."
Taken from: https://dirtfish.com/rally/wrc/why-are-rally1-teams-not-testing-for-monte-in-december/
Now I'm aware they're a 3 car entry for Monte but Jourdan isn't nominated for points & since he's not going to contest in all 13 rounds do M-Sport still 'enjoy' the 21 days allocated to them? (although they'll be a 2 car team for most of the year).

Dirtfish is wrong, like they usual are.
For manufacturer teams, no matter how many drivers you have, its 21 days for team. So Tanak could use 20 and Loubet 1, if they want.
The rule: "In the case of a Manufacturer, a maximum of 21 days. In the case of a WRC Team, a maximum of 7 days plus an additional 1 day per entered driver for any second nominated driver, up to a maximum of 7 days per driver and a maximum of 14 days per team."

In what way Neuville is wrong? They have 21 days to split between the three drivers for each rally so Neuville will get seven days, if they split it evenly. And seven is half of fourteen (or roughly half of thirteen).

This is it. A "WRC Team" is the case of Hyundai 2C or Toyota NG.
This is the detail that is confusing people. A WRC Team and a WRC Manufacturer is not the same thing. All of MSport Ford, Toyota and Hyundai are manufacturers this year so they get 21 days and are obligated to nominate at least 2 and maximum 3 cars each rally. We had a team last year, Toyota Next Generation (or NG), and another team the year before, Hyundai 2C. Teams can nominate 1 or maximum 2 cars each rally.

Yes. Apparently Neuville got ill and tested only one day. Breen will test then two days.
Today we got confirmed from Jarmo Lehtinen, in Kristian Sohlberg's twitch, that Katsuta's test days are taken from the 21 day quota only for the rallies where he is running for manu points. In the rallies where he drives fourth car, he has an extra 7 day test quota (like Serderidis).

His point was entirely valid. What Turdfish propose in their latest podcast is madness. It should be the other way around, more testing days should be permitted (limit them to a number of fixed sessions in the year if necessary), but no current-generation cars should be used in national rallies. It's so much more expensive, and you can be sure that the teams will exploit that loophole to the maximum.

and then we can complain again about rally becoming a sport detached from the people!
ps: "less value-for-money" that's hard to belive for me, if you account also the pr and engagement of a real rally. (i was at some regional rally with official teams and the number of people there only for wrc car and official drivers was huge)

Entry fee to a rally could be like 1000 euros, while renting and repairing a test road 15000 euros. What makes running a local rally more expensive? I understand there are things that might be tricky like if you get a technical problem on SS1, you're retired for the day and all the effort goes to waste while on a test day you could just tow the car to service and fix it. And testing on one road has its benefit for comparing data, but then again running more different roads could also have its benefits. A test day could give you more kilometres, and a local rally takes more liaison driving.
I don't think we should ban testing nor running in local rallies.

His "point" seemed to be that testing expenses don't matter much when the cars are 1-2 mil euro. That's entirely wrong.
Testing is the area where you can most easily use extra money to get extra performance benefit and it is really expensive.
Whether or not dedicated testing or running national rallies is more/less expensive is something else.
My point is that if you want to save money limiting testing is the simplest way to go. But it has to be done properly so that loopholes are avoided, cause teams always look for loopholes. (testing in large area around homebase, running national rallies etc.).
Yes if a team has lots of money they will always find an area where they can use it, but most other areas offer much less "performance per buck" and in most of them there are also strickt limits already (homologation jokers, engine freezes ++).

A test day could give you more kilometres, and a local rally takes more liaison driving.
I don't think we should ban testing nor running in local rallies.
Even if teams can make the optimum arrangements for those local rallies, as they would for dedicated tests (unlikely - the best hotels are always booked a year in advance by national teams), the value for money is always substantially worse. As you say, even on a national rally, the maximum you can expect is 100km of running. Assuming nothing breaks - so worthless for experimenting with new ideas and concepts.
The biggest problem is, however, the fact that a team's different drivers can't all do a national rally on different days. They have to compete at the same time, or do different events. Either way, this either means teams being busy 51 weekends per year, or sending 2 or 3 cars (with the appropriate number of team personnel) to each event. Thus, significantly more expensive than a dedicated test.
So, it's for those reasons why I think what Turdfish proposed - banning testing and encouraging teams to compete in unlimited national rallies - is a really dumb idea. As usual from them.

This is a very good point. Also it might not always be possible to find local rallies with matching roads to the following WRC event.

Exactly. Even Otepaa and Kuopio are a compromise, and are only really useful for giving new drivers a bit more seat time.

It depends where you go, of course. Eastern Europe or Spain are always going to be cheaper than Finland or Estonia. Italy kind of falls in the middle. Depends on the road and surface. Sometimes repairing the tarmac road is more expensive than gravel... I remember when I have seen "last WRC" cars on Corse, they were literally shreading pieces of road.

And if I remember correct, in one country, in the cost of the tarmac test, rent for the road was required to the local authority…

Good gravel test yesterday and nice to go straight into gravel mode after Croatia. The @TGR_WRC team has made good progress on gravel since last year, as shown in Mexico, and we’re working hard towards the next seven gravel events in a row.

Toyota had to canceled half of Tuesday, whole Wednesday and probably whole Friday, and Hyundai whole Tuesday (on Wednesday they planned to have a break anyway) and Friday with crews flying there and back... Until yesterday evening only Rovanpera and Lappi did their test.
I hope for rain in Greece and honestly seeing how it looks like on the place, IMHO it would be very difficult to have a rally if it is scheduled in the next few days.

It might be confirmation bias as I am pretty used to these roads being "almost" local, but I do not actually find this particular section dangerous or scary - at least in terms of what the stages look like over here.
Those 3.2 kilometers are obviously quite fast and narrow in the forest, but the surface is quite smooth with little to none significant bumps etc.
Anyways, it was my first time seeing Rally1 in person, and have to say, that car is pretty sick. Extremely well balanced, doesnt "move" while cutting or braking at all. It was very impressive experience to see such a machinery in a familiar surroundings.

To clearify: it´s the kind of stage in combination with very fast cars. And yes, I know safety is very good in those cars but still we have physical laws deciding most of the outcome after an off.

Per, what Walach meant is that the road used for the test is super smooth in the local rally standards (the test was held in a Barum rally area). Anyway the Czech CER stages are no Pindula-like broken bumpy dirty something which only remotely resembles tarmac. It seems that there are only few bumpy roads and quite a lot of nice smooth asphalt.

All roads used for rallying or testing are counted, though. To me even test roads can be dangerous. We know that too well.
