from videos we had seen till THIS time ,yes it was true.
Of course at future plenty changed.
how was it true? did we have a timed test stage for all the cars? Was there so dramatic differences in Monte? Which car was leading the championship after Sweden?

"The same Finnish driver is enthusiastic about these experiences on rally cars, as he himself states:
"It's really fun. When I tested the Yaris it was great, driving such a powerful car on the tarmac is incredible, especially for me coming from the track. At the end of that day, I was in line with the times of Kris Meeke, who had tested a few hours before me.

It`s not your average Yaris/Fiesta you use to get from lace A to B. Even there there are differences to get used to, not to mention the difference between rallycars.

Even on a stage sometimes it’s hard to tell how effective a car/driver can actually be; I remember watching all 4 cars testing here prior to 2017 gravel events and Meeke’s C3 looked mindblowing fast.
that is because the c3 was mindblowingly fast. in testing at least, when they had the setup absolutely right and knew the road.

Originally those comments are from crash.net and the article was about testing with Toyota. There is comments like “That was quite encouraging for a first day in gravel.” So it was before Rally Finland.

Lol there's surely no way Bottas was/is on the pace of a WRC driver even after testing on the same piece of road over and over.
I can't believe it. If he starts driving WRC cars next season he'll be lucky to be anywhere near even Kimi's level, and even then Kimi started with lesser categories and tried to do a bit of groundwork.
The guy must be out of a drive at Mercedes F1 next year with all this nonsense and wrc testing.
lnvs
17th August 2019, 15:40
Mäkinen said in Marca.com that he was surprised about the pace of Bottas.
Testing times doesn't tell much about rallying. After several runs in same short road it turns to be like circuit and then one of the best circuit drivers should be pretty fast. Back in the days Kimi was faster than Loeb and Ogier on test roads.

you doubt that c3 was faster asphalt car at the debut of this category? because that some guys among me had mention, after some dry asphalt tests we had seen.
That the c3 wasnt leading is totally another (well known) story. It happens for various reasons...see Tanak Latvala Lappi Meeke last years.

the C3 was definitely the best car on tarmac in 2017 in my eyes.
2017, Meeke was leading Corsica before the engine went kaputt, Mikkelsen was second in Germany and Meeke won in Spain.

I agree, it actually looked better in 2017 than it does now, which is bizarre. It always looked like it had plenty in reserve on dry tarmac, no understeer, just fast. Meeke always looked like he could drive within himself and be fastest, and Corsica and Spain showed that. Now it looks like it understeers like the others did in 2017!

Is it possible that teams are using him as a "test guy" for future hybrid tehnology. We know that in F1 is this kind of tech there for a while now. And maybe he could give some sort of tehnical advices. Because let's be honest why would almost all official teams give opportunity to a guy like him from completely different discipline. Just my thoughts.

Wonder how they can (or if they can) legally enforce that. Probably only with self-censorship from the people filming.
Anyway I get that the main reason is others probably have to make some changes as well and we haven't seen their designs yet.
Also since it looks like they can make these changes without using jokers (there were no jokers for Germany by anyone) it's also an Opportunity to improve things that didn't work so well "for free".

EDIT:
At 0:37 there is a quite clear view of the new wing. Apart from the less "rounded" shape, there seems to be a drastic reduction of the "sidepods" that follow the shape of the wider side-panels of the WRC car that are not there on the normal car. This would correspond to the rumors about "following the shape of the rear bumper".
Note that the only other WRC car that uses those big "sidepods" is Fiesta WRC, so I assume they probably might have to change those a bit as well.
Best pics for comparison that I quickly found are these:

Tbh that's much bigger change than I expected, unless it's some development step/intermediate option.
No matter if it has any impact on performance or not the controversy will imo just explode if it comes to Turkey like that, cause the potential implications are beyond crazy.

Legally, there's no chance, none whatsoever. But the beauty in rallying is (and more specifically about the people involved in it) that it's maybe the last resort in all sports where this kind of non-selfish spirit still exists.

Paddle is obviously there in place. I can see two reasons - paddle shifting system was broken and they continued driving with manual shifting or they were testing/checking backup system, as sometimes you need to do it. For sure it was not cost saving, you can see he needed to use clutch as cut-off system is not working without paddle, so for sure it was worse for gearbox internals/clutch than fully functioning paddle.

Watcinhg these test vids got me thinking about how the decision is made about what set up is the best.
Times can't be that important, since the road is cleaner after every run and the driver starts to remember the stage.
So what data is being used to make the decision?

I think it’s more about getting a good set up and experimenting with various settings until they get there.
They can still achieve this with a clean road.
The drivers and engineers can still determine a good set up regardless of times. Driver ‘feel’ and engineer data analysis allow them to achieve this.

Things should be compared to the nearest drives, because the road doesn't change so dramatically after the first two or so. Rallying is anyway about changing conditions. Every corner is different to each other and when you go to the rally you can't be sure of the conditions or road order.
I heard that Loeb had a skill to drive the test stage with the same pace throughout the day. Then at the end of the day he would show what he had learned during the day and make a drastically faster time.

Glad I didn't try and get to it now... I imagine some will still find a way! ;)
I get with private team tests that they don't want to have to manage spectators, but to me, not allowing spectators (or even media) to attend an official pre-event test seems like a wasted opportunity.
There's so much talk about cutting down on testing because of costs, but it's worse that all this money is being spent with a show being put on, but we're not allowed to go and see it! That's where the waste is.

Breen tested in Wales earlier this month, where, despite a week of late summer sunshine and high temperatures, the team found a wet road in the Dyfi Forest complex.
“It’s vital to have a wet test,” said Breen, “and we found somewhere which retained the water. It was out of the way of the sun and under the trees and it was good. We had the bowser there as well, just in case we needed to dampen it down again.
“The test went really well. We worked on the car through the day and I felt really confident in it. I’m really happy with the way it finished and I definitely think we have the package to do something good.”

The testing conditions could play a big role, especially for the first day of the rally. The likes of Ogier/Lappi/ Meeke look like they had bone dry conditions only, whereas the rally is going to be very wet and slippy.
Those 3 drivers also dont have any data available from last year here in their current cars, so would they just base their initial setup on their teammates (in Meeke's case), or the setups Citroen ran last year for Mads and Craig (in Ogier and Lappi's case)?
Shakedown will certainly be important for a few of the drivers anyway.

It's hard to say what parts are bigger, especially since the pics have different level of zoom (first ones especially) . Only clearly bigger parts are those plates extending from the wing ends and from front wheelarches.
Anyway as long as the rules are the same for everyone it's no problem teams push them to the limits.
The most innovative part for Citroen is actually the very front.

Citroen never went for as much front and side aero as the others... plus have needed to use jokers to address all their other issues.
Seems they have finally admitted all the other teams were right and front aero is necessary to balance the rear.

Yes, if Mikkelsen would use the WRC car to test the Pirelli tyres, that would use their allowed testing days. And conversely, the R5 testing isn't limited (except for a couple of weeks in the country where the next event is run in)
Anyway, would you consider possible that Pirelli would supply the tyres for Hyundai WRC team in 2020? The control tyre rule is coming in 2021, maybe they want to compete with Michelin for that role?
Or is this testing for an effort to take part in the WRC2 championship, to be maybe sponsored by Pirelli?

There is still no change to homologations list (since 2/8). Watch it before the rally as it usually is published a few days before the rally. (I guess it needs to be updated before scrutineering). That said even if there are changes it doesn't mean team will use them. Before Finland Citroen homologated engine changes but first used them in Germany.

on a side note, i sometimes hear at the stage end drivers say they don't know how they got flats/slow leaks/tires off rims/broken rims/etc. and i understand that tires and rims are built to take some abuse and the need to take the racing line and some calculated degrees of risk when necessary, as after all we are talking about the top drivers fighting for tenths of a second. Now after saying that, based on those pictures and the billions of pictures/videos already out there, should it really be such a shock to the drivers when they do indeed get punctures/etc while cutting some of these rutted corners and sharp kurbs/stones at varying degrees?!?! The majority of the time it works out, but sometimes it doesn't, just don't act so surprised when the inevitable happens

Agreed. They seem to believe that because they have recce'd the stages they know where and how far they can cut. But unless they get out at every corner and see what's in the grass they are taking a risk. Plus there is the factor of the car's running ahead of them dragging a stone or revealing one on the corner.

Looks like the new aero is not really improving the tendency of the car to nose up on the jumps. Just pure observation, obviously we don't know what they are working on and which setup they are testing. Nice autumn colour in the Finnish forests.

Running old aero as well for comparison. Front and rear wing should be easy to switch but dunno about the planes on the front sides. Suppose they didn't have two cars?
Anyway it totally looks like a quick veryfication test before homologation, especially with the timing.
We'll know for sure shortly.

Check regulations.
66.4.3 A single test day also covers the possibility for 2 or more drivers and/or more than one WRC car to test on the same test road, only if these drivers are not testing at the same time.

Tänak to test on Thursday, Toyota squad 4-10 december
Hyundai Motorsport director Andrea Adamo is looking forward to seeing new world champion Tänak at the wheel of the championship-winning i20 for the first time.
“We are really excited to hear his feedback,” said the Italian. “Ott didn’t drive the car at all before this week. It’s his first time and we want to discover how it is.
“We are all looking forward to working with him and it’s great to get the input into the car from another top driver. We saw that when Seb [Loeb] joined us at the start of this season.”
Ahead of the test, Tänak has requested a variety of set-up solutions but the team wasn’t willing to go into details.
